My coworker built a Classic Chevy Truck and was in Mt. Dora for a car show. He has custom paint jobs on his cooling fan shroud and alternator bracket, as well as some custom detail work for the rest of the engine.
How's that for some specialized hardware. Those little brushes are used for engine turning. That holder adjusts so very little of the brush tip protrudes. That's called "brindling" the brush and it controls the amount of spread the brush will yield under pressure. Then you use a mixture of mineral oil and diamond powder called a "slurry" to provide even more abrasion. And then of course you spend hours scraping little circles into the surface of the aluminum. I'm using this to make a control panel for a guitar amplifier.
Two engines at the main crash site and another is some distance away. I don't know where the other one is.
After cycling through parts of Germany and huge parts of the Netherlands in two days, I was able to have a restday, since the ferry port was only 20-or-so kilometers away from the youth hostel. Having established that wheels with thin, 23mm tires are useless in soft sand, I decided, that this was as good a spot as any and spent a couple of hours laying in the sun on the beach close to Ijmuiden.
The engine register counted the number of propeller shaft revolutions and served the same purpose as an odometer in a car. During conservation the "Monitor" became visible on the registers faceplate. This was the first piece of the wreck recovered that bore the name of the vessel.
I was in Laurinburg, NC for a work related event. After the event, since my wife had to work, I continued on to Hamlet to visit the depot and museums. Seaboard Air Line engine 1114 on display in Hamlet, NC.
It may be called the engine shed, but the first thing that was admitted to us on a tour of the building was that it "definitely wasn't an engine shed"...
It is quite apparent that the openings at either end are nowhere large enough, even after alteration, to have accommodated engines. HS have told me that their research suggests it was a pug shed, but it is interesting that the c1942 OS map only shows a single track abutting the south side - if it was was for pugs, then I would've expected at least two tracks taking the width of the building - you wouldn't have a shed for housing locomotives that was three times wider than it needed to be. I would also have expected the central opening to have been larger, even for small pug engines.
Far more likely, I think, is that it was a simple goods shed, with a central opening large enough for flatbed trucks or open wagons.
Here we were conducting an engine disassembly. There were two diesel engines: a Westerbeke 120 in-line six cylinder, and a Westerbeke 50 in-line four. Both engines were take-outs from boats that needed to be repowered; they were tired or broken beyond economically reasonable repair. As part of our Propulsion 1 course we discuss engine architecture and basic operation. By taking these engines apart, the students get to see the parts of the engine they learned about in class and how they fit together relative to the engine as a whole. We use tired engines for this purpose because we don’t expect the students to know enough to get the engine working properly. Indeed, we will not even attempt to rebuild these engines. The students also get to use their wrenches and sockets for the first time.
