Leyland Fire Engine, West of England show ground.

My concept for this idea was to have the engines of the plane made out of coffee out of a cup to make it look like a plane. It was mostly successful but I didn't get the coffee to spin like a engine.

Very clean and neat looking.

Taken at Tokorozawa Aviation Museum in the special event that commemorate 100th anniversary of Japanese aviation. This Zero fighter comes from Planes of Fame.

The building is surprisingly modern being dated 1874 but the engine within was somewhat fourth hand when it was bought by the Prestongrange Coal and Iron Company.

This beast of an engine with a 70" diameter piston was built in 1853 by the Plymouth firm of J.E. Mare & Co for a Devon mine and after some ten years of service was moved west to service two Cornish mines before being bought by Messrs Harvey & Co who refurbished it and then cast a new shorter beam before selling it and shipping it north to pump water from the Prestongrange coal mines. The new cast beam is 33 feet long and weighs in at some 30 tons necessitating a supporting wall some seven feet thick to support the weight.

The mine was notably deep and wet. As early as 1830 the 'Great Seam' was being mined at a depth of 420 feet and later shafts were sunk to a depth of nearly 800 feet to exploit the Beggar Seam. By 1900 the mine was extracting 1000 tons a day according to the Dalkeith Advertiser.

Running at two to three strokes per minute the engine could lift some 650 gallons of water per minute and although later supplemented by subsurface electric pumps it didn't pump it's last until as late as 1954, the year that also ushered daviddb into this world.

Two breakdowns have been recorded in the engine's 80 year history at Prestongrange when in both 1916 and 1938 a piston rod fracture damaged the cylinder which now sports a new bottom and a multiplicity of cast iron clamping rings.

The Maker's plate states it was made by Marshall and Sons in London. I found this aincient static steam engine in the grounds of a hotel in Peulla southern Chile 1n 2008. It appeared that it had been in use not so many years ago. Anyone out there shed any light on this?

Old White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR) Railroad Steam Engine No. 196

After descending Wall Hill, the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern's westbound Huron-Rapid City freight (MHURC) passes through a huge culvert-like structure that brings it underneath Interstate 90 some three miles east of Wasta, SD.

This telephoto image depicts typical track conditions on the DM&E west of Pierre, SD. Not surprisingly, these track conditions mean 10 mph speed restrictions on about 125 miles of track.

Welded rail is in place on the west end of the line, but the 40 mph speeds on that portion of track are interrupted by slow orders due to damage from heavy rains in June.

Having thrown out the original print of the photograph I wasn't quite sure what this vehicle was. It appeared to have a vertical rear transverse engine ...unusual in single-deck buses. Might it be a Daimler Fleetline with single-deck bodywork? It was to that invaluable resource Bus Lists on the Web (http://www.buslistsontheweb.co.uk/) that I turned. Here it was given as a Daimler SRL6, which would make it a Daimler Roadliner with Leyland engine I think. Fleetlines were CRG6 weren't they? Have I got this right? The grille and access flap certainly look like those of a rear transverse engine. Was the Roadliner so equipped? It seems perverse to provide a single-deck vehicle with an engine configuration that was undesirable from an engineering point of view, but necessary in double-deck vehicles for height-saving reasons. Bodywork was by Willowbrook. The vehicle was snapped at Northampton on Thursday 17th January 1980.

Peter and Bruce work steadily to build the engine for the open-top D9.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_%26_Whitney_R-2800_Double_Wasp – The R-2800 engine, in its initial use, had a tendancy to overheat. This Wiki article explains how these improved, very narrow, cylinder cooling fins were cut into the aluminum, all at once and following required contours.

After meeting the CP 8547 South at Green Island, the IC&E's MCCHU (Chicago-Huron, SD) train's crew pulled out of the siding after operating the new radio-controlled north siding switch.

MCCHU's crew will go dead on the hours at Dubuque. The heavier-than-usual traffic on the IC&E Chicago and Marquette Subdivisions due to detouring CP freights is wreaking havoc on the IC&E's schedules.

CP traffic between Minneapolis is detouring via the IC&E and other routes due to flooding that inundated CP's Watertown Subdivision.
