Today the Hereios of the We're Here! group are visiting Strange Places. I never thought I'd see a musician in the engine compartment of a Ford Focus, though we do live in strange times.

Cobb's Engine House (properly known as Windmill End Pumping Station) in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, England, is a scheduled ancient monument and a Grade II listed building built around 1831.[1] It housed a stationary steam pump used to pump water firstly from Windmill End Colliery and later other mines in the area. Utilizing a shaft 525 feet deep, 1,600,000 litres of water were pumped from the mines into the canal daily.[2] It ceased work in 1928 and the Newcomen type engine was moved to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan in 1930.[3]
It stands near Windmill End Junction in the Warren's Hall local nature reserve, where the Dudley No. 2 Canal and the Boshboil Arm meets the southern end of the Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal. The area came into the possession of Sir Horace St.Paul from his father-in-law, John Ward, 2nd Viscount Dudley and Ward, on his marriage to John's daughter Anna Maria Ward.[4] It was Horace who instigated the construction of the engine house.
visible: Skunk 2 polished aluminum strut tower bar, samco sport hose kit, TEIN EDFC terminals on the the ends of the TEIN Flex coilovers, NGK performance spark plug wires, Optima battery. I installed the Optima battery after the previous one died...supposedly there was a short in the EDFC that might have caused the battery to drain. TEIN repaired the EDFC but I'm still having issues with it, but have been too busy to deal with it for now.
Engine 374, a wood-burning locomotive, pulled the first passenger train into Vancouver in 1888 (the original CPR terminus was at Port Moody) and is preserved at the roundhouse.
Very very orange to match the frame's reddish-orange interior, this clean and well kept 327 V8 looks fantastic.
Maumelle Engine 2 is a 1996 Pierce Quantum purchased used in 2007 from the Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 in Pflugerville, Texas.
The Quantum, which was known as Engine 211 in Pflugerville, initially served as a reserve pumper for Maumelle. It was pushed into full-time service in November 2008 when the department created a second engine company. It is scheduled to be replaced in May or June 2010 and will again return to service as a reserve after being renamed "Engine 3."
Engine 2 features a 1500 gpm Waterous pump, 750 gallon booster tank, Pneumax CAFS system, Honda 5000S on-board generator and is powered by a Detroit Series 60 engine.
Drove it a little, found an oil leak from the cheap-assed Chinese timing cover. Gotta take all the front stuff off to replace it, doin' that now. Ran real good, twice the power of the stock 283. Feels like 350/400 hp. Not abusing it yet but I can tell it's there. After I get about a 1,000 miles on it I'll NAIL IT !!

A surprise visitor to east central Illinois! BNSF 4111 leads Norfolk Southern's D1T west down Philo hill on a sunny May afternoon. The bright orange BNSF engines are a change from the customary black NS power.
The building is surprisingly modern being dated 1874 but the engine within was somewhat fourth hand when it was bought by the Prestongrange Coal and Iron Company.
This beast of an engine with a 70" diameter piston was built in 1853 by the Plymouth firm of J.E. Mare & Co for a Devon mine and after some ten years of service was moved west to service two Cornish mines before being bought by Messrs Harvey & Co who refurbished it and then cast a new shorter beam before selling it and shipping it north to pump water from the Prestongrange coal mines. The new cast beam is 33 feet long and weighs in at some 30 tons necessitating a supporting wall some seven feet thick to support the weight.
The mine was notably deep and wet. As early as 1830 the 'Great Seam' was being mined at a depth of 420 feet and later shafts were sunk to a depth of nearly 800 feet to exploit the Beggar Seam. By 1900 the mine was extracting 1000 tons a day according to the Dalkeith Advertiser.
Running at two to three strokes per minute the engine could lift some 650 gallons of water per minute and although later supplemented by subsurface electric pumps it didn't pump it's last until as late as 1954, the year that also ushered daviddb into this world.
Two breakdowns have been recorded in the engine's 80 year history at Prestongrange when in both 1916 and 1938 a piston rod fracture damaged the cylinder which now sports a new bottom and a multiplicity of cast iron clamping rings.
