The show of Raveleijn.
Raveleijn
Ravelin (or "Raveleijn" in Dutch) is a theatre at the Efteling amusement park in the southern Netherlands. It was designed by Sander de Bruijn at a total cost of 30 million Euros and opened its doors on April 8, 2011.
Raveleijn is a multifunctional complex with, amongst others, a theatre, conference hall, restaurant and offices. The main part of Raveleijn is the arena where 5 shows (30 minutes) are performed per day. The open-air arena has a capacity of 1,200 visitors on a total of 1450 m2. The cast has 10 members and the music was composed by René Merkelbach and Het Brabants Orkest with vocals by Anneke van Giersbergen and others. The pen for the animals (5 horses, 1 owl, 1 falcon and 5 ravens) is located next to the parking area. Another main show element is a five-headed, mechanical dragon named draconicon.
The story was written by Paul van Loon and tells the tale of the Woudenberg family of seven who move to the edge of a forest. The children discover an old city gate in the forest, where a tyrant oppresses the people. As it turns out, the five kids have the special gifts needed to fight the tyrant. This story has also been made into a Book, as well as a 12-part miniseries, where more of the plot is revealed.
The show got an update from 30 April 2013 and after, still using the original tale, but with a new decor and some script changes. This new show is produced in partnership with the French theme park Puy du Fou which is renowned for its large open air park shows.
The show starts with the father of the Woudenberg family, walking among the visitor seats saying he has lost his children. After that the main show starts, four of the Children (Thomas, Maurits, Emma and Lisa) walk up to the gate of Ravelin, read the text on the gate, and walk through it. They emerge again, now older, on horses and in armour. They meet up with their younger brother Joost, who says he had discovered the gate before them.
Countess Halina warns them that a falcon is coming, announcing the arrival of the evil count Olaf Grafhart. The count emerges from the water and asks what they are doing in his city. Thomas, the oldest brother, says they are here to free the people of Ravelin of his rule. The count calls his guards, and when Halina stands up for the siblings, he makes her disappear. A fight ensues.
When the siblings emerge victorious, count Olaf calls on his Draconicon, which emerges from the foliage. Thomas calls on his brothers and sisters to make use of their elemental powers, which they got from their weapons. After Draconicon is defeated, the siblings surround count Olaf and Countess Halina is returned. The count is driven back into the water by Halina, and disappears. The siblings go back through the gate, and emerge again in their normal clothes. Here they are also reunited with their dad, and the show ends.

The text is part of the Athanasian Creed from the Psalter element of the manuscript. The leaf is from a very interesting Psalter-Hours that was produced c. 1250-1300 and at various times attributed to England, Flanders and the Rhineland.
The size of the leaf is 177mm x 134mm (6 19/20ins. x 5 1/4ins.).
ILLUMINATION AND DECORATION: -
Whilst the leaf has conventional illuminated initials and line fillers, there are also Five totally unconventional line fillers of pen and ink drawings of fanciful and grotesque creatures. These are: -
1. What appear to be two men pulling the ropes that could be attached to another man hanging from a frame.
2. A cow(?) with a bell around its neck and playing a hirtenschalmei (shepherd's shawm) being persued by a dog which is almost biting its tail.
3. A seated griffin with a beak also playing a hirtenschalmei.
4. A griffin raised on its hind legs.
5. A seated griffin with a beak.
Four of the five pen and ink drawings have been cropped in a binding process, as has the penwork to the initials at the top of the recto and the bottom of the verso. This cropping is typical of most, if not all, of the leaves from the manuscript.
PROVENANCE
1. It is thought that the Psalter-Hours from which this leaf comes was broken up, perhaps in France, and the leaves dispersed in London in the mid 1960’s. Dorine Proske-van Heerdt indicates that the Psalter-Hours was in the collection of the late Esther Rosenbaum (but see comment below).
2. The leaf was described as “A very fine leaf from a Flemish Psalter, 1250-1300” in an “Exhibition of the History of Writing, The Folio Society, London, 1968”.
3. The leaf was Folio Fine Art Ltd., stock number MS 2617 at a price of £10.10. 0.
OTHER LEAVES: -
1. There are two leaves in the Jeanne Miles Blackburn Collection, Item Nos. 12 and 13.
3.
2. The Rendells Catalogue 146 (1979), Item Nos. 85 and 86.
3. Bruce P. Ferrini Catalogue 1 (1987), Item Nos. 36 and 37.
4. Leaves are to be regularly found on the catalogues of Sotheby's, Maggs Bros. and other main stream dealers and Auction Houses.
GENERAL COMMENTS: -
Although there is a little wear to the gold, this is a superb leaf from what must have been a a magnificent and very interesting book. The style of decoration is so different to which is usually found.

Bromine, symbol Br, atomic number 35 is a red, non-metallic liquid discovered in 1826 by Antoine Balard in a salt marsh. *Though perhaps a German student Carl Lowig found it first but didn't get around to claiming it. Bromine is not something you want to stick your nose in, as it is irritating, burning and hazardous, with a noxious vapor.
The name bromine comes from the Greek for "bromos" or stench. The stench might even be that attributed to a stinky goat.
From bromine, we get bromides, which are compounds containing bromine. An example is silver bromide is used in photographic processes.
Bromine/bromide has also influenced language. That is the use of bromide to mean dull, uninteresting, trite and tiresome. To quote wordsmith.org: " In earlier times, potassium bromide used to be taken as a sedative. So any statement that was intended to be soothing ("Don't worry, everything will be OK.") acquired the name bromide. Eventually any commonplace or tired remark and anyone uttering such remarks came to be known as a bromide."
From this boring "bromide" comes "bromidic," the adjective form.

My print was created by screen print with 3 screens for 3 color process. Due to some learning curve errors, in the end my screens were created by painting the negative space with screen filler.
I used the image of a goat after reading a reference to "stench of the goat" relating to the Greek word for stench. This goat is standing by a marsh and inhaling the nasty red vapor of bromine (but he doesn't mind, because he already smells).
After I had designed the image, I went on to read about the linguistic connection between bromine and bromide/bromidic. I thought that was really interesting. I always like when sedation leads to new words. Nowadays I don't think these terms are used much, but we should put them back into use. It can be the new cool slang if we get the right people saying it in public. It's basically the equivalent to "triflin'" (trifle-ing) anyway.

I love this project, everybody's prints, and can't wait to see where this goes. Thanks to azuregrackle and everybody else. Various internet sources were used in obtaining the above info about bromine.

Inspired from the novel and TV series, The Magicians by Lev Grossman
"Quentin Coldwater, is a New York Magician who attended Brakebills University. As Quentin discovers upon entering Brakebills University, magic is more than the card tricks he's learned over the years. It's very real and he can wield it, with some serious practice and focus. Seemingly for the first time in Quentin's life, the future doesn't look so bleak."
Concept 1: The Broken Mirror
In the TV series, a major scene is shown where Quentin encounters a broken mirror and uses magic to change the future. I depicted the playing card symbols carved on the side of the mirror as a way to tie in Quentin's love of magic.
Concept 2: The Moth
A villain frequently appears as, "the Beast" and is depicted with a nest full moths covering the Beast's face. Quentin and the Beast have an unfortunate connection later in the series. I wanted to depict movement with a scattered dot style with a repeatative element: the moth, and it turned out very clean, like you can see the typeface well even under the dots and moths.
Concept 3: The Key
In the TV series, Quentin, in order to find a key to undo the problems in the fairy tale world, finds himself spending a lifetime with fellow magician, Elliot. This puzzle was the missing link to obtain the key.
Concept 4: High Queen Margo
Magician Margo becomes a queen in Fillory. Her crown had depictions of leaves and jewels.

Iodine: Iodine is a shiny blue-black solid element. The French scientist Bernard Courtois discovered it in 1811 in seaweed when he treated seaweed ash with sulfuric acid. Dried seaweeds, particularly those of the Liminaria family, contain as much as 0.45% iodine. Iodine is primarily used in medicine, photography and dyes. It naturally occurs in the environment chiefly as a dissolved substance in sea water, although it is also found in some minerals and soils. (Source: www.mii.org/Minerals/photoiodine.html)
I was inspired to use images of the sea and kelp in my print design because of the strong iodine content in this particular seaweed. I didn't know about iodine in seaweed until I lived in Japan where people eat many different kinds of seaweed every day. I've grown to love eating seaweed through nori, kombu, hijiki and wakame in Japanese food.
Printmaking process: This print was made using the traditional Japanese woodblock printing method. First a woodblock was carved with the design and then watercolour inks were applied to the block. Then Japanese paper (pre-dampened) was carefully placed over this and a baren (a small, round, flat disc covered in a bamboo leaf) was used to rub across the back of the paper. The paper is then taken off the block and placed flat to dry between dry sheets of newspaper.
