A few images from the Cliff Mautner workshop in Philadelphia/New Jersey. Workshops are limited 20 and sell out many weeks in advance. Participants come from all over the globe and this is a great way to connect with a great group of people and with a world class instructor.

We both love the Gerald and Piggy series by Mo Willems. We would actually play the whole scene when reading the books. She always chooses to be Piggy :)
There’s a moment when the noise fades, when the world falls quiet, and all that remains is the rhythm of your own breath. This image captures that space — the private sanctuary we retreat to when emotions swell too high or the world grows too loud. The child’s hands frame their face like a shield, but it’s not fear we see — it’s calm. A stillness, deep and unspoken.
This portrait is less about seeing and more about feeling. The lowered lashes, the softness of expression, the gentle shadows — they invite us into a space that is intimate, vulnerable, and utterly human.
One of my most successful images! The Cathedral is Wells, Somerset, England, but the sky is taken in Melbourne, Australia.

Westminster Cathedral in London is the mother church of the Catholic community in England and Wales. It is the largest Catholic church in England. John Betjeman called it "a masterpiece in striped brick and stone in an intricate pattern of bonding, the domes being all-brick in order to prove that the good craftsman has no need of steel or concrete."

Dark clouds and some rain at the beginning of our last hike to Preikestolen. But there was some bright light at the horizon...
In the stillness between heartbeats and hospital monitors, she waits — holding life within her, holding hope within herself.
The room hums with silent prayers, the air thick with unseen courage.
Here, in this quiet storm, strength whispers its first cry.
Pink Hex: Caught in the Glow (B&W) - Fog, gels, and controlled light wrap the frame in color, but the real pull is in the pause. A moment caught mid-thought, where atmosphere and emotion meet without needing to compete.
Fred is a model I have already worked with, and together we have explored several very different shooting styles. For this session, I wanted to take him out of his usual comfort zone by offering something more graphic, with a very tight portrait framing.
I used LED tube lights as the main source, which you can see as thin white streaks reflected in his eyes. The light is both very soft on his face and still directional enough to shape contrast, which works especially well for a male portrait where the skin texture and beard add character.
Barn doors on the sides of the tubes help control the beam and prevent the light from spilling onto the background, which I wanted to keep very dark to enhance the dramatic feel of the portrait.

A clearing sky allows the sun to break through and light up the market town of Barnard Castle, Teesdale. Taken on 1st March - the first day of meterologocal spring - after Storm Jorge passes over.

We don't get much dramatic weather where I live, in San Diego County, so it was a real treat to watch this thunderstorm developing in front of us at Canyonlands National Park. A little later there was rain, thunder and lightning. I tried, without any success to get a picture of the lightning, but could never time it right. If I lived somewhere where this was a regular occurrence, I would definitely buy a lightning trigger.

Taken on a July trip to Bahia de Los Angeles in Baja California, Mexico. Later that afternoon there was an intense thunderstorm.
I've been taking infrared photographs for over 12 years, with a total of 3 different cameras. It's much easier to take infrared images digitally that it was in the film days. If you like this look, I have an album of infrared photographs, creatively named Infrared.

I think this is probably my most pretentious title yet. When I first set out to document this Calla Lily, I was only thinking in terms of the flower. I was very surprised at how beautiful the leaves are, too. I tried this with and without the leaf, and I think it's much more effective this way. This was lit with just one small studio light, a reflector and a dark background. I took one version of this with just the flower in sharp focus, and then one with the leaf in sharp focus, and combined them in Photoshop.
