I think this is probably my most pretentious title yet. When I first set out to document this Calla Lily, I was only thinking in terms of the flower. I was very surprised at how beautiful the leaves are, too. I tried this with and without the leaf, and I think it's much more effective this way. This was lit with just one small studio light, a reflector and a dark background. I took one version of this with just the flower in sharp focus, and then one with the leaf in sharp focus, and combined them in Photoshop.

Dramatic light over the Brazillian National Congress in Brasilia, Brazil.
As with most of the city's government buildings, the National Congress building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the modern Brazilian style.

Taken on a July trip to Bahia de Los Angeles in Baja California, Mexico. Later that afternoon there was an intense thunderstorm.
I've been taking infrared photographs for over 12 years, with a total of 3 different cameras. It's much easier to take infrared images digitally that it was in the film days. If you like this look, I have an album of infrared photographs, creatively named Infrared.

This is one of the individual flowers that were on the plant I brought home yesterday. I converted the color version of this image to black and white using Nik software's Silver Efex Pro 2. You can see the color version down below in the comments.
Lighting stuff: I wanted dramatic, rather than even lighting, so I used my lights accordingly. The main light was a YN560-II in a 24 inch softbox at camera right, and I used a YN560-III hand held in a Rogue grid to light up the "bit" (a technical botanical term) growing from the center of the plant. Both strobes, in manual mode, were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.

All lit & shot individually, then comp'd together in Photoshop.
Lit with 2 Elinchrom DLite heads. Large softbox on front, about 2 feet from subject, above and at 45 degrees, feathered away slightly to give sharper falloff into shadow. Rim light provided by 2nd Elinchrom head in smaller softbox with no front diffusion panel, about 3 feet behind subject's right shoulder and 75 degrees.

Pre-dawn sunlight turns rare desert storm clouds orange over the Namib Desert, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia.
I saw a pretty light coming through a window in our bathroom. Seeing the light, I was expecting a dreamy, soft picture of this white rose. The result actually surprised me. Instead of seeing a dreamy, soft light, the light that came through the window actually produced a dramatic light. ..and I love how this looks in BW.
