How's that for a pretentious title? This is from the garden this afternoon. We bought it during a visit to Texas last year, and the variety according to the grower is Sunrise Sunset.

listen to XuXu Fang - These Days
Es braucht keine amerikanische Großstadt, keine verlassenen Straßenschluchten und keine Kulisse aus einem alten Film Noir. Manchmal genügt eine kleine Straße mitten in Billerbeck im Münsterland.
Regen fällt auf das alte Pflaster. Das Wasser sammelt sich zwischen den Steinen und verwandelt die Straße in einen dunklen Spiegel. Über den Häusern ziehen schwere Wolken, doch an einigen Stellen bricht das Licht hindurch. Für wenige Augenblicke entsteht diese eigenartige Mischung aus Dunkelheit und Hoffnung.
Ein Mann kommt die Straße entlang. Ein langer Mantel, den Kragen gegen Wind und Regen hochgeschlagen. Der Kopf nach vorne gebeugt, die Hände tief in den Taschen. Im Mundwinkel eine Zigarette. Wohin er geht, bleibt offen. Ebenso, woher er kommt.
Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.
Der Titel lässt an die großen, einsamen Straßen der Filmgeschichte denken. Doch hier ist der Boulevard keine breite Straße in Los Angeles oder New York. Es ist das regennasse Pflaster einer kleinen westfälischen Stadt.
Gerade dieser Gegensatz macht für mich die Szene aus. Ein vertrauter Ort verändert sich durch Wetter, Licht, Perspektive und Schwarzweißfotografie vollkommen. Aus Billerbeck wird für einen kurzen Moment eine Bühne. Der Regen wird zum Gestaltungsmittel, das Pflaster zur spiegelnden Fläche und das Licht zwischen den Wolken zum einzigen Hoffnungsschimmer.
Vielleicht erzählt das Bild von Einsamkeit. Vielleicht von jemandem, der etwas hinter sich gelassen hat. Vielleicht ist der Mann aber auch einfach nur auf dem Weg nach Hause.
Die Geschichte bleibt beim Betrachter.
Und irgendwo zwischen Regen, Wind und Licht wird aus einer kleinen Straße im Münsterland für einen Augenblick der Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.

This image captures the tranquil grandeur of King Munmu’s underwater tomb, where the morning sun meets the enduring legacy of a king who wished to become a dragon and protect his homeland forever.
In the hush between thought and action, a hand rises—not to grasp, but to shield, to define, to demand pause. The eyes behind it are shadowed but sharp, not hidden in fear, but in focus—piercing through the veil of ambiguity. This is not a pose. It’s a protest. I was given an assignment for my lighting class to light a single object with a single light source in a variety of ways. These were my two favorite shots from the shoot!

The conservation village of Barningham on the County Durham/North Yorkshire border as seen from Wycliffe in dramatic lighting conditions.
I like taking candids. Normally, I take them so the faces are showing but there was such dramatic lighting here with sun and shade that I like this one very much, even though it is a rear view.
1949. "We finally meet" she said. "I was getting worried."
"So, what's this important information you think you have?" I enquired.
"You've got a double agent in the ranks. Secrets are being sold and your life is in danger."
I was about to ask if she knew his identity, when we both turned at the sound of footsteps. The echoes made them sound like they were coming from every direction....

Actually, this is a succulent plant, but it looks a lot like the cracked crab claws that poisoned my cousin and me on our recent trip to Mexico. I haven't been that sick in a very long time.
I lit these from the side with a small CF studio lamp and put an off camera flash behind which backlit the orange tips.
This is a combination of three photos, each with a different focus point, combined in Photoshop to give greater depth of field than the lens is optically capable of. This technique is also referred to as "focus stacking". A friend lent me a macro slider which allows for much more precise focusing.

my mom hadn’t told me she loved me?
my mom hadn’t worked so hard to give me a better life?

my mom hadn’t concerned herself with who I hung out with?
my mom hadn’t always put her kids before herself?
my mom hadn’t held me when I was sad?
my mom wasn’t……MY MOM?
Without my mom, I wouldn’t be a fraction of the man I am today. Because of her I have the courage and self esteem to stand up for myself, treat others with respect, and to give 110% of everything I do; regardless of the act. If you’re going to spend the time on doing something….do it right.

In Yemen, where machines can't go, they use camels to plow land, help with domestic housework and much more. These camels however were freely feeding on dried grass in Yemeni landscape. This photo was taken late afternoon under setting sun and that time of day brings out warm colors.
