this was a very ordinary scene, except i really appreciated the little bit of reflective light coming off the edge of the road and the deep, billowing clouds. IMHO, redscale makes this shot. believe me, it wasn't a very dramatic frame otherwise. : )
more of my homemade redscale roll made from fuji tungsten T64 35mm film. oh, wow... maybe better than my redscaling fave DNP Centuria? but at twice the price, is it worth it? hmmmmm...
maybe you all can help me decide. what do you think?

A break in the cloud cover creates very strong winter sunshine and lights up Kirkcarrion, Teesdale's iconic landmark, on an otherwise dull day in January.
Half-hidden in shadow, the child’s eye pierces through the darkness with a gaze that is both haunting and innocent. I photographed this "bird" in my sister's garden.
I wanted the flower to stand out from the background, so I used camera settings that caused the background to go quite dark before I turned on the strobes. If I'd wanted more ambient light, I would have used a slower shutter speed. I wanted the thin translucent parts of the flowers to glow, so I backlit them by placing a YN560-III in a Rogue grid behind the flowers. Fill light came from a YN560 in an 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox in front and at camera left. The strobes were in manual mode, and I played with the power output until I got the look I wanted.
I really like these beautiful flowers, and have exploited a few of them over the years. If you like this sort of thing, you might not hate my Bird Of Paradise album.

Nature is fascinating in the various forms and functions that exist. This is a robber fly, which looks like a large-sized fly with a prolonged end segment. Unlike standard flies, robber flies are predatory, stabbing their prey with their proboscis and injecting a saliva-neurotoxin mix. They prey on quite a number of insects, including some spiders and bees.
The lighting was accomplished through the use of an Olympus FL-50R flash, triggered wirelessly, held to the lower left and pointed upward at the subject. While I had intended to produce some dramatic lighting, I had not expected that so much of the image would have been cloaked in darkness. I was initially very disappointed with this picture, as the finer details of the robber fly are lost. On a second glance-through, it appears a bit more menacing like this, and I'm actually rather pleased. The fly allowed me to take two shots before buzzing off.
This was taken with an Olympus E-520, hand-held with image stabilization mode 1 enabled. Focus was performed manually, with the aid of the Olympus ME-1 magnifying eyecup. A Zuiko Digital 50mm f/2.0 Macro lens with the Olympus EX-25 extension tube were utilized. I do not recommend this lens for insect macro photography, as you must get extremely close to your subject to achieve high magnification (and many insects do not like that). Olympus FL-50R flash unit was used at high power, triggered wirelessly, and was hand-held to the lower left and angled upward.
Aperture f/20 to increase the depth of field (and which contibuted to the shadows); ISO 200 to go a bit easier on the flash; 1/100 shutter speed. Processed from RAW, and cropped by a fair amount (lens was not used at its closest point of focus).

The diffused light cutting through the clouds paints a quiet tension over the sea —
a moment of pause between power and stillness.
Morning rays strike the Balmoral Hotal and surrounding buildings in Edinburgh, painting them in an orange glow.
The Balmoral is a luxury five-star hotel and landmark in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is located in the heart of the city at the east end of Princes Street, the main shopping street beneath the Edinburgh Castle rock, and the southern edge of the New Town.

A patch of strong sunshine lights up Middle Side as the overnight cloudy conditions break up. Lane Head farm in the centre of the picture. The abandoned and ruined High Stonygill House can be seen on the hillside in the dustance at the top edge of the sunlit patch. Taken from the Tees Railway Walk near Mickleton.
Don’t you just hate when you have so many things going on that you simply can’t do everything? I honestly with that I had about 6 more of myself to help accomplish everything I want to do. You figure if I had that many replicas; I could sit back and RELAX. I don’t figure that’s going to happen anytime soon, so it’s back to business.

I noticed this morning that my wife's cosmetic mirror dramatically reflects the overhead light. It's the sort of thing any self-respecting photographer must take advantage of. I used the only available model.

Marcus is one of my roommates next year and a first-choice director in the film program at UNCSA. After a long day of crewing and a fun night of college-choice fun, we still had the energy to go downtown and shoot some pictures. This is the only one of the set I enjoyed and its probably because of Marcus's sweet jacket.
