A quiet moment of determination as a young climber picks a route through the rocks beneath the cliff face.

No, I didn't die. I had a secret hiatus that I now need to put to an end as there are 3 (!) shows that are asking for my work...

Summer's End: Woven Armor: Modern mythology meets high fashion. Gold sequin cascades catch the light against minimalist backdrops, framing a portrait defined by resilience and shimmer. The focus is on material contrast and sheer presence.

The PopSpot Ultra 50 3 Light Kit is a great tool for lighting creative portraits like this! We slid a red and blue colored gel into two of the PopSpots' built in gel holders and used the third light in the kit as a hair light. PopSpot LED Fresnel-style lights give you the power to add light exactly where you want it in a scene.

Description: An artichoke slightly past it's prime on a cloth draped over a wooden edge.

I love to find beauty in the "unlovely"... there is so much color that begins to happen when nature ages items... like the patina in rusty buckets and this colorful artichoke.

Gamlehaugen glows as a shaft of light helps it stand out from the dramatic background.

Gamlehaugen is a mansion in Bergen, Norway, and the residence of the Norwegian Royal Family in the city. Gamlehaugen has a history that goes as far back as the Middle Ages, and the list of previous owners includes many of the wealthiest men in Bergen.

Week 37 (Sept. 20-26, '09)

As I was lumbering around this morning I saw the light coming in the window - "Sheba, sit.." so she did, the first shots didn't light her eyes up, then she turned just so, and this shot came to be. It's different than my usual stuff, there's something serious about it. I like it because it stands out to me. Kind of feels like Sheba's imprisoned and this is her view of the outside..

In reality however, I had just had her outside letting her play herd the bunnies. A gentle form of exercise and mind stimulation :)

Some the mistakes from your shoots are the best ones. Funny how that is. I hadn't done much Strobist stuff lately so I thought I'd take some self portraits. I grabbed some props, set up the lights and started shooting.

Strobist Info/Explanation of the mistake: I was using a three light set up, 3 Nikon SB-28's. One to either side of me for left and right rim light and one front and just a hair to camera right. The side lights were both bare and blue gelled and the main light was using a shoot through umbrella. Turns out the key light wasn't firing for several shots and I didn't know until reviewing the images. And viola, that's where this image was produced.

Image was run through Lightroom but other than some minor color work, and kicking up the blacks and contrast, it wasn't changed too much from right out of the camera.

I will be writing up a blog post about this shoot with more of an explanation of setup and flash power, placement, etc. in the near future (plus more images from the shoot).
