The C-46 was developed from the new and unproven commercial aircraft design, the CW-20, which first flew in March 1940. Deliveries of AAF C-46s began in July 1942 for the Air Transport Command and Troop Carrier Command. During World War II, the USAAF accepted 3,144 C-46s for hauling cargo and personnel and for towing gliders. Of this total, 1,410 were C-46Ds.

The C-46 gained its greatest fame during WWII transporting war materials over the "Hump" from India to China after the Japanese had closed the Burma Road. C-46 flights on the treacherous air route over the Himalayas began in May 1943. The Commando carried more cargo than the famous C-47 and offered better performance at higher altitudes, but under these difficult flying conditions, C-46s required extensive maintenance and had a relatively high loss rate. In Europe, C-46s dropped paratroopers during the aerial crossing of the Rhine River near Wesel in March 1945. C-46s saw additional service during the Korean War.

The C-46D on display is painted as a C-46 flying the Hump in 1944. This aircraft was retired from USAF service in Panama in 1968 and was flown to the museum in 1972.

After striking out the previous day (having missed a powerful storm which struck the Denver area) there would be another chance on 7 June as a lee trof established itself along the Front Range. Wind fields were supportive of classic supercells in the highly unstable air with more potential for tornadoes and large hail, and by mid-afternoon intense storms had developed in Platte and Goshen counties in Wyoming.

The City of Houston developed rapidly in the 19th century due in large part to its capacity for shipping and transportation. This was made possible by waterways, such as Buffalo Bayou, and railroads, five of which radiated from the city in 1861. Houston's industrial center, the warehouse district, grew up east of Main Street, along the banks of Buffalo Bayou.

In 1860, Samuel May Williams sold this property to Houston physician D.F. Stuart, who built a warehouse in the 1880s for cotton storage. The Lottman brothers purchased the site in 1893 and converted the building into a mattress factory. In 1904, they sold the property to H.F. Spalti, vice-president of Olive & Myers Manufacturing Company of Dallas. Spalti and Company President W.B. Myers started Myers-Spalti on this site. J.A. Grieves assisted them in developing the Houston branch of their successful mattress and furniture factory.

The original warehouse housed the millwork and planning sections of the company. Built in 1905, Warehouse Number Two housed the shipping, cabinetry and finishing departments, and Warehouse Number Three contained the printing and management offices. By 1907, a rail line extended onto the property from nearby tracks. Myers-Spalti added a fourth warehouse for storage in 1909 and additional structures in the 1920s. The company moved operations in the 1950s.

The development of Houston's industrial architecture can be seen in this site's building styles, which range from brick and heavy timber to concrete slab and columns. Since the 1950s, the buildings have housed hardware sales, electronics and manufacturing, storage and other light industrial businesses. The structures were once part of a city marketplace project and later developed into residential housing.

Arista Premium 400 film stand developed in Rodinal at 1:100 concentration for 60 minutes with 30 seconds of inversions at the start and then 5 inversions at the 30 minute mark.

The choice to stand-develop was a total goof on my part. I thought the camera was loaded with Fomapan 100 that I accidentally shot at EI400. I was really surprised it was Arista 400 when I looked at the developed negatives. I was even more surprised that they came out nice!

Yet another day at home during lockdown so I developed 14 films that have been taking up room in my fridge. I use a Sous vide to control the temperature in a water bath set to 41 deg C. I use a double Paterson system 4 tank to do 2 films at once. I used a Bellini Foto Monopart 1lt C41 Kit. The Developer was heated to 40 deg C as it drops by 2 deg c when poured into the tank. The rest is just timing and the temperatures are not as rigid as the developer. All 14 films came out OK with no problems. Tomorrow is scanning day.

The Bureau of Land Management Southern Nevada District hosted a grand opening of Nawghaw Poa Road and a temporary visitor contact station at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area May 19.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District oversaw construction of the road and adjacent trail, bike lanes, and parking.

“Based on recent public input, improving access to Petroglyph Canyon was the top priority at the NCA,” said Tim Smith, BLM Southern Nevada District Manager. “We had already created 44 miles of trail but we heard you when you asked for a paved access road, installation of a temporary visitor contact station and added amenities like restrooms, kiosks and increased parking."

For this project, the City of Henderson and the BLM partnered on designing the road.

"Jeff Owens, a civil engineer with the Arizona-Nevada Area Office, worked as the project engineer to ensure the plan met Corps specifications," said Project Manager Claudia Garcia. "It was an amazing team effort, we finished ahead of schedule and on budget."

The Clark County Conservation of Public Land and Natural Resources Act of 2002 established the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area and the North McCullough Wilderness.

As part of this act, the BLM was required to develop a plan for the appropriate use and management of the NCA.

"Ken Wong [a senior project manager with the Regulatory Division] worked very closely with the BLM to develop the environmental assessment," said Garcia. "And, the Nellis Resident Office Contracting Officer's Representative Viet Tran, and construction representatives Jake Narciso and Robert Reid were all instrumental."

Friends of Sloan Canyon and others are volunteering to staff the new contact station and BLM has hired a law enforcement ranger, a park ranger and an outdoor recreation planner, all dedicated to the NCA.

Minor back thrust developed in Ordovician interbedded limestones & shales in Kentucky, USA.

This outcrop is in the famous Cincinnatian Series of the tristate area of Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana. Rocks in the Cincinnatian were deposited in relatively shallow marine facies during the Late Ordovician. The Cincinnatian succession is mostly interbedded limestones and shales - all richly fossiliferous. Most of the limestones are event beds (= tempestites), deposited during ancient storms.

A subtle thrust fault is present here at this outcrop, along with small back thrusts, which dip in a direction opposite to the main thrust fault.

The main thrust fault acted as a conduit for groundwater, which dissolved out a small cave along the strike of the fault (see: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/31949022868).

Thrust faults are low-angle reverse faults - they form by compressional stress. Thrust faults involve the hanging wall moving upward and the footwall moving downward.

Stratigraphy: Fairview Formation, Maysvillian Stage, middle Cincinnatian Series, Upper Ordovician

Locality: Maysville West upper cut - roadcut on the southeastern side of Rt. 62/Rt. 68, just south of bridge over Lawrence Creek & south of the Harsha Bridge over the Ohio River, northern Kentucky, USA (~vicinity of 38° 40’ 04.23" North latitude, 83° 48' 07.08" West longitude)
