Philadelphia, commonly referred to as Philly, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the second-most populous city in the Northeast megalopolis and Mid-Atlantic regions after New York City. Philadelphia is known for its extensive contributions to United States history, especially the American Revolution, and served as the nation's capital until 1800. It maintains contemporary influence in business and industry, culture, sports, and music. Philadelphia is the nation's sixth-most populous city with a population of 1,603,797 as of the 2020 census and is the urban core of the larger Delaware Valley (or Philadelphia metropolitan area), the nation's seventh-largest and one of the world's largest metropolitan regions consisting of 6.245 million residents in the metropolitan statistical area and 7.366 million residents in its combined statistical area.
Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn, an English Quaker and advocate of religious freedom. The city served as the capital of the Pennsylvania Colony during the British colonial era and went on to play a historic and vital role as the central meeting place for the nation's founding fathers whose plans and actions in Philadelphia ultimately inspired the American Revolution and the nation's independence following the Revolutionary War. The Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP) is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located in the Fairmount section of the city, and was operational from 1829 until 1971. The penitentiary refined the revolutionary system of separate incarceration, first pioneered at the Walnut Street Jail, which emphasized principles of reform rather than punishment.
Notorious criminals such as Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton were held inside its innovative wagon wheel design. For their role in the Kelayres massacre of 1934, James Bruno (Big Joe) and several male relatives were incarcerated here between 1936 and 1948, before they were paroled. At its completion, the building was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States, and quickly became a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide.
The prison is currently a U.S. National Historic Landmark, which is open to the public as a museum for tours daily.

At the March 17, 2016 Elizabeth Board of Education meeting, held at Mabel G. Holmes School No. 5 in honor of the contributions to the school district made by Ms. Holmes, the Elizabeth Board of Education celebrated Women’s History Month and the dedicated service of several women within the Elizabeth community. The Board recognized seventh and eighth grade students of School No. 5 who have exhibited outstanding academic achievement, the valiant efforts of a student in assisting another injured student, and the Elizabeth High School Forensics team for its high level of success in in the New Jersey Forensics League State Championships at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. The Board also recognized two security guards for successfully assisting the Juvenile Unit of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office with a missing persons case and fostering positive relationships at their school as well as the 2016 Governor’s Teacher of the Year and Ed Service Provider of the Year from School No. 5.

During the month of July, members of the Canadian Forces acted as sentries outside Government House in Halifax on specific days of the week, and on weekends, when free tours were available to the public. Through their valuable contribution, the number of visitors to the viceregal residence more than doubled those of the previous year.

With his contribution to the exhibition Bernhard Cella installs a production environment that is seen as disappearing–the world of the printer’s workshop: table, shelf, paper, printing plates, color, work clothes, work bridge, and a Heidelberg flatbed letterpress. The installation itself is active and reproduces a book: How to disappear completely and never be found from 1985. Thereby Cella addresses the crisis of the ability to disappear. In his research project NO ISBN–On the Privatization of the Publication Cella is interested in publications that are published without an ISBN number, and are thus escaping detection by the international goods exchange system.

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) celebrated the Birth Anniversary of Pai Tiatrist, Joao Agostinho Fernandes on Monday, 14th December 2015 at Pai Tiatrist auditorium, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
On this occasion TAG presented Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Awards to 6 tiatr artistes who have contributed immensely towards the development of tiatr stage. They are T. Stellar offensive contributions from UC Santa Barbara’s Luis Silva (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Mora Salesian HS) netted the senior standout his third Big West Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honor.
Silva produced three goals and three assists in a pair of Gauchos victories, figuring in all but one of his team’s seven goals on the week. The midfielder also received national honors with his selection as Top Drawer Soccer’s Player of the Week and placing on the College Soccer News Team of the Week.
He opened the week with a goal and an assist in UCSB’s 3-1 victory against UC Davis. Silva then led the Gauchos to a huge 4-3 road win versus Cal State Fullerton, scoring twice and assisting on the other two goals. He connected for a goal in the third and 50th minutes, and one of his assists was on Fifi Baiden’s game-winner in the 78th.

The life and contributions of Civil War hero and 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes was celebrated during a wreath laying ceremony at his tomb in Fremont, Ohio, Oct. 5, 2014.
The ceremony served as the capstone event for a weekend celebration at the Hayes estate which hosted more than a 1,000 visitors. The celebration included hundreds of Civil War era costumed re-enactors, period exhibits and re-enactment of the second Battle of Kernstown.
Army Reserve Brig. Gen. R.A. Bassford, deputy commanding general of the 88th RSC, officiated the ceremony on behalf of President Barrack Obama and paid tribute in his stead.
Opening the ceremony was Christie Weininger, Executive Director of the Hayes Presidential Center, who said Hayes was a man who was very much committed to his country and preserving the Union.
“…when war was becoming eminent, he and his wife Lucy talked a great deal about what he would do,” said Weininger. “This was a man in his late 30’s, a successful lawyer, a husband and father of three young children.”
“Answering that question,” said Weininger, “Hayes wrote that he would much rather enter this coming conflict and die than to live a long full life and had sat out during one of the most important events in our country’s history.”
Bassford continued the tribute by recalling to the audience stories drawn from Hayes’ lifetime of service to the Nation. Actions which still serve as an example for the leaders and service-members of today.
In 1864, then a Union Army General serving in the Civil War, Hayes was nominated to run for the House of Representatives and asked to return to Ohio in order to campaign. Having been in a number of battles and wounded twice, he refused the request, said Bassford.
“In a response to those who nominated him,” said Bassford, “Hayes wrote an officer fit for duty who at this crisis would abandon his post to electioneer for a seat in Congress ought to be scalped.”
“The key word here is duty,” said Bassford. “To do what you see as necessary, regardless of what your personal interest and desires might be – to place the greater good ahead of your own personal advantage.”
“Hayes refused to leave his post, ...but was elected to the House despite his refusal to campaign,” said Bassford. “Throughout his life he did well by doing what was right.”
“Hayes was a man who served his country honorably and well – a man who deserves our respect and admiration,” said Bassford.

Over 1,300 personnel from all three armed services, veterans and cadets made the 2019 National Armed Forces Day parade in Salisbury the largest one to date. Originally conceived as Veterans Day, the name of the event was changed in 2009 to National Armed Forces Day to celebrate the contributions of both past and present members of the British Armed Forces. Taking place on the last Saturday of June, the parade is one aspect of a whole weekend where the national lead event is hosted by a different town or city each year around the UK.
The national event was held from 28 to 30 June 2019 in Salisbury and hosted by Wiltshire Council and its council leader Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE.
Her Royal Highness Princess Anne reviewed the parade on 29 June 2019 of more than 1,300 service personnel, cadets and veterans and took the salute on the dais in front of the Guildhall, accompanied by the Mayor of the City of Salisbury John Walsh, as the procession went by. The parade was preceded by a fly past by the Red Arrows at 10 am. The parade was led by a detachment from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, followed by bands and marching contingents from the three armed services, veterans and cadets and finished with the British Army units which hold the Freedom of the City of Salisbury.

The national event provided an opportunity to welcome the troops returning from Germany to Wiltshire, as one-quarter of the British regular army will be based in the county by 2020.
The Armed Forces and Salisbury have a close and historic relationship and the national event gave the people of Salisbury the chance to thank the Armed Forces for their tireless support towards the city’s recovery following the Novichok poison attacks in 2018.
Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “Wiltshire is the beating heart of the Armed Forces and we are extremely proud of our long association with the military. The Armed Forces Day National Event is a unique opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to the specialist military teams, the emergency services and the other organisations that managed the incident and the subsequent clean-up that has helped south Wiltshire to return to normal.”

As a contribution to the legacy of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the presidency of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and Europeana wanted to highlight the relevance of digital cultural heritage to the aims of the European Union during the next multiannual framework. During this two day event in Varna on May 28-29, 62 participants from 21 countries explored this together with experts and representatives of ministries of culture across Europe and draft a vision that expresses this contribution in concrete terms.

This looks like an upsidedown steel pan drum. It took some research on my part to find out what it is. It is called a Hang Drum and was developed in Switzerland about 10 years ago. The fact that it is played with the hands instead of sticks gives it a nice soft sound. The music was beautiful and ethereal.

The accomplishments and contributions of five Island seniors have helped build stronger communities across the province. That is why they’ve been named Prince Edward Island’s 2019 Senior Islanders of the Year.
Eileen Chiasson-Pendergast, Patrick Curley, Wanda MacLean, Paul H. Schurman and Isabel Yuill were recognized for their community leadership, spirit, and commitment to making Prince Edward Island great.
“Through their tireless volunteer efforts, mentorship, community activities, fund-raising, advocacy and overall positive attitude towards life, these Islanders have made a sustained and lasting impact on Prince Edward Island for the benefit of us all,” said Isabelle Christian, Chair of the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat.
The Senior Islanders of the Year award are given out annually to recognize the significant contribution of Island seniors in community life including volunteerism, artistic achievement, fund raising, community participation, fitness and recreation, and other activities. The recognition program is overseen by the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat.
Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) celebrates the Birth Anniversary of Pai Tiatrist - Joao Agostinho Fernandes on 14th December every year. TAG presented Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Awards to tiatr artistes who have contributed immensely towards the development of tiatr stage. 14 such tiatr personalities are felicitated at the hands of Hon’ble Minister for Art & Culture, Shri. Dayanand Mandrekar. Veteran tiatr artiste, Smt. Josefina Dias was the Guest of Honour.
