Opening Day on Sept. 12 marked several celebrations of employee contributions to the college. Employees were recognized for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service to the college. Four employees–Facilities Services Maintenance Mechanic Michael Conder, ITS Specialist David Sims, Business Professor Patti Serrano, and eLearning ITS Specialist Scott Coffie–earned recognition for 35 years of service to the college.
Additionally, the recipients of the annual Exceptional Faculty Awards and quarterly Classified Staff Excellence Awards were recognized. The faculty awards are announced at Commencement and the quarterly Classified staff awards are announced each quarter. Additionally, two Classified Excellence Award recipients were announced to be recipients of the annual Exceptional Classified Staff Awards: Linda Healy and Vanessa Meyer.
Six Clark College employees received Presidential Coins during Opening Day. Introduced in 2007 by President Bob Knight, the coin is given to faculty and staff members who provide exemplary service to Clark students, the college and the community. The honorees are decided by the president and are kept secret until the names are announced–generally on Opening Day in the fall or during the annual State of the College address.
The Purple Heart (PH) is awarded to a soldier that has been either injured or killed in action. The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is the next level up from the Purple Heart. This recognition is for heroic or meritorious achievements or service. The Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC) is presented to those soldiers that have earned more than one Purple Heart or Bronze Star Medal.
Although African Americans struggled with racial equality, they made significant contributions during the Vietnam War. Engraved on Milton A. Ross' headstone are letters BSM, PH and OLC. Many African American troops received numerous medals but were not recognized in the mainstream media. Black newspapers, like The Omaha Star, are significant because they published news from the black community. The following is a list of troops whose accomplishments were celebrated in The Omaha Star. In 1967 Blaine A. Wilson received the Air Force Commendation Medal. In 1966 George H. Williams received the Vietnam Service Medal and James E. Prater received the Bronze Star. Porter Pittman was awarded the Purple Heart during his 26 month tour in Vietnam. During 1969, the same year that Milton A. Ross won his Purple heart and Bronze Star, Maurice T. Craddock received the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Accommodation, and the National Defense Air Medal. All of these African-American men are from Omaha.

My contribution to the word solitude. Last summer I was walkin' the streets of Port Jefferson, L.I., NY, doing my strobist thing.
This word plays a big part in my life. My passions are things that tend to be solitary in nature. For many years I surfed through the winter on L.I. with a 5mil. wetsuit. Well, there aren't too many people in the water when it is 38º. I can remember being out in the ocean one Christmas morning and the snow started to fall. Just me, the snow and my mistress, the ocean. What a rush!! When I finished my session I had to walk through six inches of white to get to my car. Now that's solitude.
Biking, Scuba diving, ( especially at night ) and photography are also favs. of mine and are pretty much solitary things.
Well, I gotta get outta here. I should be packin'. Off to NY to enjoy a wonderful Christmas with my family.

Michael Faraday | Contributions to Science - Faraday was one of the greatest scientific discoverers of all time. His main contributions were in the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. In a 2002 survey in UK, Faraday was ranked 22nd in the BBC’s list of the 100 great Britons. In fact, Einstein kept Faraday’s photo on his office wall, along with the photos of Newton and Maxwell.

Ethiopian peacekeepers from the Ethbatt1 company received the UN medal and were recognized for their contribution to building a durable peace in South Sudan. They have been working tirelessly to protect thousands of vulnerable South Sudanese living in the UNMISS protection of civilians site in Juba. They also persevered through poor road conditions and unpredictable security circumstances to reach remote communities and help build confidence amongst the local population.

Another contribution from the Sadd's.
This was a very cool find in the Morgan Run Environmental Area. Just beyond the sign is a creek with an old bridge on either side but no longer across it. Apparently, someone exceeded the weight limit.
It felt really good to go on a lond walk with the temperatures hitting the upper 60's today. Should help shed all the holiday and hibernation pounds!

Where were you? To join us for the next MI event:
mentalbeans.com/mondo-instante/
Mondo Instante, or MI, is the global photography experiment originally developed by three women on three different continents—Shannon in the Cleveland, Ohio area, United States/North America), Mecha in Puerto Madrin, Argentina/South America, and Silvia in Rimini, Italy/Europe.
The project name itself, Mondo Instante, is a blend of Italian "Mondo" (World) and Spanish "Instante"(Instant)—meaning "the world in an instant"—to honor the native languages of Silvia and Mecha.
The project occurs once every three to four weeks on a predetermined day at a specific time, and lasts only an instant (Mondo Instante!). At this designated singular moment, all participants from points around the world are ready with camera in hand to take a photograph of their immediate environment, whether it be a self portrait, of someone or some object close by, or a panoramic shot of their location. The photos are then submitted, and then finally posted together side by side in an online gallery exhibition here on the blog— little windows into the lives of people all over the world at the same moment in time.
