contribution to Macro Mondays group for 26/06/17 the theme being "Broken"

I'm away for a few days so may not see many contributions so HMM to one and all!!

I found this challenge hard, not because I couldn't think what to do but because the choice was too big and I think I've ended up being a bit cliche.

My First-Ever contribution to Fence Friday!

So ... HFF!

Wishing you all a HAPPY WEEKEND! I hope your week went well!

Thank you so much for your visit and for your kind comments! They are very much appreciated!

San Francisco, California, USA

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, California—the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula—to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. It also carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and is designated as part of U.S. Bicycle Route 95. Recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Wonders of the Modern World, the bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and California.

The idea of a fixed link between San Francisco and Marin had gained increasing popularity during the late 19th century, but it was not until the early 20th century that such a link became feasible. Joseph Strauss served as chief engineer for the project, with Leon Moisseiff, Irving Morrow and Charles Ellis making significant contributions to its design. The bridge opened to the public in 1937 and has undergone various retrofits and other improvement projects in the decades since.

The Golden Gate Bridge is described in Frommer's travel guide as "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world." At the time of its opening in 1937, it was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, titles it held until 1964 and 1998 respectively. Its main span is 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and its total height is 746 feet (227 m).

Don't even know what the flowers are - they grow wild all over the place (like weeds!!!) but 3 of them fit easily on to a pound coin. Well I say easily - they are a pain to get to sit where I want them...

Macro Mondays contribution for 24 October 2016:

Swarowski Crystal Pig. The title means something in that "he" managed to get from his home and under my feet - quite a drop! As I needed to capture a back lit subject he became the obvious choice!

Lighting is all natural which meant I didn't have much time to get a half decent shot. Now I get an idea of what landscape photographers have to deal with.

I posted the reality version of this shot here, but thought it was worthwhile cleaning the vandal's nasty contribution and showing what it should look like.

Contribution to MM challenge for 1/4/19, theme "April Fools"

This is something that amazed me since I first started looking at photography (though my ability isn't reflected in how long ago that was!) There always seemed to be a picture of an apple on fire and it's taken me this long to get round to trying it for myself. After all, how hard can it be in these days of digital compared to all those attempts with film.

Well..... Not as easy as I thought it would be. It took ages to find the right method to get the apple to actually catch light. I tried everything from lighter fluid to paraffin stopping short of petrol. Then there was the time I had to soak the stalk(?) to get it to hold the flame. But perseverance got me there in the end late last night. Bonus was the starry sky outside but the breeze made things tricky too.

Anyway I hope you all have a lovely day. I hear there's a Brexit deal all sorted out and signed by all parties and EU nations.

This is my contribution to Macro Mondays Look Up

And when I look up I of course lay down first

It's a pretty cool 'challenge' because you get to see it all in a different perspective than you normally do

Which is the story of my life lol

I think you can change things by doing just that

It is easier to observe things when you use a different perspective, putting on your objective glasses and look at what you are doing with your life, no judging

So

There I lay all down on the tiny spot where there is no snow, all by the house

Look UP

says Macro Mondays

And there they are

Small angel wings waving in the wind - making it a bit difficult to take a macro of course

I believe in many things, I love light and what that stands for and I know there are angels on earth

By having this belief I look for signs

If I had beliefs which was on the opposite side, the dark side, I would have looked for signs for my belief then too

That is why it can be difficult to get out of a pattern, we are being reassured that things are the way we think, like they are in our belief, because we have it around us in our sphere, social media, which groups do we follow, what news we want to be fed by.

Not to mention the people we are surrounded by - well we choose them for a certain reason, they match us somehow, until they don't.

I guess we feel safe having this common belief, either it has a light side or a dark side.

Fear is, I think, a foundation deep in us from the ancient days when we were hunting or being hunted at

Fear of

Not having enough food

Not having sufficient clothings

Not having roof over your head

Not having a job

Not having enough money

Not being cool enough

Not being good enough

Not having the body you see in the ads

Not having the hair you want

Not being socially accepted

Not doing your job good enough

Not being the best friend

Not being the best parent ever

aso

The ones that control us by using our fears knows exactly what they are doing

Of course they do, they see it work every time

Be aware of the manipulative people you have around you and stop them by withdrawing, no need to take a fight with them, they will never understand

Being aware of what sides of you they manipulate will indeed make you grow, then you can do something about that, you have a choice to get out of the pattern

Choose your people

They influence you more then you can imagine

Have a lovely week

I know my week will be awesome, of course it will, because I want it to

MM contribution 18/3/19, theme something to do with the first letter of my surname!!

Well this does indeed begin with the first letter of my surname. It then goes on to use the second, third and fourth letters of my surname in order. Then it stops.

Some flash usage here again but not interesting as it was all trial and error!!

contribution to MM challenge for 26/10/20, theme: one colo(u)r

was tempted to replicate the recent "yellow" theme! I missed the last time one colour was the theme (I think) but did put an image up that met the criteria, perhaps the following week (Feb 2018 ish). I've also taken the opportunity to catch up with the recent "string" theme so it's 2-4-1 today only.

My contribution for this week's theme "morning", for the Swedish photo group Fotosondag.

Torsdagmorgon. Tack, Dimman, tack.

contribution to Macro Mondays theme for 5/6/17 - "silhouette"

This isn't truly a backlit silhouette. Basically it's a VERY underexposed plant with a made up background shot in camera using flashes and foil. There, my secret's out.

Note that despite appearances this isn't a flower, it's some kind of succulent that lives in our bathroom. The shoot is new growth and the entirety of what is shown here measures about an inch!

More flash info: 2x Nikon SB-R200 units, one with green and one with amber gel. set behind subject firing onto foil covered board. both set to manual and 1/50 controlled by camera built in commander. rear curtain sync.

#DutchAngle

Please press "Z" :)

A very unusual (for me) MM contribution in quite a few ways, because it is a photo that I have neither taken at home nor specifically for the "dutch angle" theme – this fluffy feather was a chance discovery at last Wednesday's (fabuloutastic, I should add) photowalk at the Olympic stadium; I didn't even think about the theme when I found this pretty feather in a corner of a step of one of the many, many staircases there. And of course this isn't the photo from that walk that I'd planned to upload first, either ;-). But often things don't turn out as expected (something which happens a lot lately when it comes to MMs), and that's not always a bad thing.

This small feather, about 6 cm / 2,3 inches long, came to my rescue when my original idea didn't work out – which every way I tried to make it work (it was a small spoke reflector which I'd once found in the street; the idea was to capture its distorted reflection which made it look like a flowing piece of honeycomb, something that came to my mind because of the reflector's honeycombed structure; well, to make it short, I never managed to get the distorted reflection sharp enough so it would be pleasant to look at; maybe I can still make it work later... I also tried to magnify those honecomb patterns inside of the reflector by using the extension tubes and the Raynox DCR-250 close-up lens – but, no, it wasn't meant to work).

But back to my "Olympic feather": Most conveniently, I had already taken it at a dutch angle (Mr Freud, can you hear me?). It is a single handheld picture taken with the Ricoh (the GRIII rocks!) which I've sharpened in Topaz Sharpen AI, and then further processed it in Nik's HDR Efex Pro – I started with the "En Vogue" preset "Cool Deep" which I'd then still tweaked a little here or there. And because the staircase I'd found this feather on had been in a shadowy corner of the stadium (and the feather in an even more shadowy corner of the step), the DNG outcome was rather dull; to add some much needed light I went into ON1 where I added a "Sunflare" texture filter to the upper left corner of the image; back in LR I added the preset "Soft Fog" and tweaked the luminosity and saturation sliders for a dreamy look.

HMM, Everyone, stay safe and healthy!

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 at the corner of Cambie and Water streets in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood. It was built to cover a steam grate, part of Vancouver's distributed steam heating system, as a way to harness the steam and to prevent street people from sleeping on the spot in cold weather. Although the clock is now owned by the City of Vancouver, funding for the project, estimated to be about $C58,000 was provided by contributions from local merchants, property owners, and private donors. Incorporating a steam engine and electric motors, the clock displays the time on four faces and announces the quarter hours with a whistle chime that plays the Westminster Quarters. The clock produces a puff of steam from its top on the hour. The clock is featured on the cover for the 2011 Nickelback album Here and Now.

The steam used is low pressure downtown-wide steam heating network (from a plant adjacent to the Georgia Viaduct) that powers a miniature steam engine in its base, in turn driving a chain lift. The chain lift moves steel balls upward, where they are unloaded and roll to a descending chain. The weight of the balls on the descending chain drives a conventional pendulum clock escapement, geared to the hands on the four faces. The steam also powers the clock's sound production, with whistles being used instead of bells to produce the Westminster "chime" and to signal the time.

contribution to MM challenge for 19/2/18: Fasteners.

I'd never photographed a zipper but had seen many pictures of them that really impressed me so I set out to have a go. This is the result! I became more obsessed with the button then with encapsulating 2 fasteners in the same image.

It was really hard to keep still while I took this.

I bought a new taste of tea this weekend and thats my contribution to this weeks theme "Taste" in the group Fotosöndag.

At Noshinima's Neighborhood

The Challenge At Noshinima's Neighborhood: The City Block

This is the third of my challenges taking place at my brand new, bigger parcel, also named Noshinima's Neighborhood. This setup was a nightmare to work on, and after weeks of work and a lot of lindens spend, I have finally came up with a new challenge for all of you and it is now ready for visitors. This is a new concept I am showcasing on my Flickr, where I challenge 50 great artists to do a photo shoot in the backdrop I created at my home sim.

For the third challenge, I created a large New York style city block, complete with all the different types of retail store outlets you would find at in your typical downtown stroll along downtown. There are clothing stores, supermarkets, pizzerias flower shops and all types of different settings that can be potentially found in just one city block. This also comes with a fairly realistic street view complete with cars and trucks. I am challenging the names tagged in this post to do a shoot within my city block anywhere they like and however they like.

Rules and details:

1) I (Noshinima Midas) tag 50 names of great photographers on Second Life. Said photographers that choose to participate in the challenge can come over to my parcel, Noshinima's Neighborhood (link below) and do an image anywhere in my city. You will be allowed two hours to use any posestands or props that you would like to add and are allowed to bring any friends you want to join you in your shoot. You are also allowed to make the shoot as safe or as adult as you like. The only rule is that you do the shoot within the city block. Take your time to have a look around to see where in the block would make a great place for your image.

2) Upload the finished image onto Flickr and place the hashtag #NoshsHoodChallenge3 on either the title or the description.

3) YOU MUST TAG 10 PEOPLE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE TAKE THIS CHALLENGE ON YOUR UPLOAD OF YOUR SHOOT! NO MORE, NO LESS! I have had several people during previous challenges that have not followed this simple rule so I am making it ALLCAPS to get the point across. Link them to this post and explain the rules to them as well. They must also tag 10 of their friends that they would like to see do this challenge if they themselves choose to participate as well. You must tag people that are actual active photographers on Second Life. Tagging pages dedicated to advertising a store, tagging real life photographers and tagging empty profiles does not count and is against the rules. Also, although you are permitted to do this if you desire, tagging me and tagging yourself will not count towards the number of 10 photographers you are tagging.

I am available every day. If anyone has any questions, comments or would like help in their shoots, be sure to contact me on Flickr or Second Life.

To everyone tagged, remember that once you do the shoot from the city, you must tag 10 names that you would also like to see do this challenge and use the hashtag #NoshsHoodChallenge3

Here is the link to the city block:

Visit Noshinima's Neighborhood in Secondlife

Just a disclaimer. This is not a contest. It is simply a challenge for anyone to use my parcel in their photography as they see fit. Use any creative tactics you choose.

PS. The images shown on this post are pictures taken from the city block as examples of what my parcel looks like. I will post them all individually soon as examples of shoots done at my parcel.

PPS. I want to also add that while this challenge has officially started today, the city parcel itself is not yet completed. I am still working on adding small touches and details to make the parcel stand out. You may find empty rooms in the parcel but I will work on filling them up as soon as possible. Please excuse the otherwise unfinished and unorganized look of my city block.

Good luck to all those that choose to participate in the challenge. I am looking to see your creativity on display within the city block.

Love,

Noshinima Midas ;)

Last February on a cold, snowy day, I photographed this old grain silo in my home town. I had seen it many times, but did not know much about its history. at that time.

It was the 'Thompson Farm & Garden Supplies' building and is located beside the Canadain Pacific Railway (CPR). It's likely the trains brought in the grains, and you can see the loading platform where farmers would load up supplies. Now, some old-time farmers may be able to add some input to this! Maybe the trains were taking the grains away!

You can see a little of the old 'Purina Dog Chow' sign as well!

.........................................................................................................

My contribution for #panamemdawarenessweek

Three PAR EMD GP40's put on a show of smoke and sound as they lead RUPO through Greene, Maine. While no doubt some of this was done especially for the camera it still is a sign of how tired and undermaintained these old geeps are. One has to wonder how the more maintenance intensive GE's will fare.

contribution to MM challenge for 14/10/19, theme: "wire"

strangely difficult to find a piece of electrical wire without buying a a whole reel from B&Q!

wasn't my first choice and seeing some of today's contributions it shows how narrow minded I was about this challenge, and what I could have done...

Just one note about this image - the background is part of the image and was created in camera, rather than in post prod.

My contribution to "F" Unit Friday is a pair of MLW FPA-4's of the Grand Canyon RR seen here at the canyon on 3/25/1999. Doing what they had done for CN & Via haling passengers.

Here is my little contribution to this very cool event. I'll probably make a processed version in the following days. But I don't have time now, I have to go to work, and it's going to be ... hard.

Have a nice day moonrisers, don't fall asleep or you'll dream of the red moon !

On May 12 it's ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day.

May 12 was chosen as it coincided with the birth date of Florence Nightingale, Nightingale suffered a M.E.-like illness that often left her bedridden during the last 50 years of her life.

To support anyone suffering from this or any other illness or condition is this week's theme "Blue for you - me".

This is my contribution taken on May 12th, also my father's birthday. Have a good day in heaven dad!
