Subject matter experts from three of RDECOM’s research centers -- Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center; Communications–Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center; and Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center -- showcased the Army’s research on operational energy.
The Pentagon Courtyard was filled with exhibits Oct. 2-4 as part of the Pentagon Energy Security Event 2012.

Known primarily today as a Pasadena artist and arts educator, Miss Fannie M. Kerns was also recognized in 1934 for her behind-the-scenes contributions to civic life. As a member of the Women's Committee for that year’s Tournament of Roses festivities—under the leadership of arts administrator Mrs. Winfield S. Schoaf—Kerns was part of an influential cohort of professional women who helped ensure the pageant's success during a time when such leadership roles were rare for women.

Journalling reads: When we first met you were a Cub Scout leader in Kidlington, Paul had got you into it. Since my Mum and Step dad used to be Beaver leaders and my brothers were both Cubs I thought it was kind of fun. You took me with you to one of the meetings, we had a BBQ and played with some water. I admit I didn’t like it very much, the fact that I hated Paul probably didn’t help. But mostly my problem was that I couldn’t understand why you asked me to come with you and then ignored me all the time. You wouldn’t let me help with anything. Eventually your Cub Troop ended up being disbanded since there were multiple groups in that section. You decided to help out at the local group, the 35th, ironically the same one my mum and Step dad had led in. I was kind of hormonal and clingy and I hated that you left me every week to do this. You ended up resigning, and for that I still have twinges of guilt, I know it was something you enjoyed and I'm sorry.

Every time I have to check my credit card balance, I am reminded how irresponsible I can be. Not that I overspent my monthly limit (again) or that I overlooked the tiny print warning of an APR hike if a minimum payment is not received by a certain date and, yes, the date has passed. No, it’s the pang of shame and regret I feel the moment I read the password hint my credit card company sends to my email account’s inbox; Secret Question Number One: the name of your childhood bestfriend.
It is then that I am reminded why our pact of "friends forever" failed. My terms. No balance. Early withdrawal.

This is a photograph from the second annual running of the Killyon National School 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held at Hill-of-Down, Clonard, Co. Meath, Ireland at 11:00 on Sunday 21st June 2015. The race is held as a fundraiser for the local primary school. Killyon is actually a parish rather than a town or village. With that the race started and finished at the well known Hill-of-Down where the Royal Canal and Dublin Sligo rail line run parallel and cross under the Kinnegad (Westmeath) to Trim (Meath) road. The 5KM route took in a final KM on the beautiful towpath of the Royal canal and finished outside Moran's Pub beside the Canal. Overall the race was very well organised with excellent stewarding and organisation. There was a great spread of refreshments afterwards and participants and families mingled and chatted beside the canal. The race took place on Father's Day and the Summer solstice making the day with the longest duration of day light. The race attracted very good local support from the surrounding areas with local runners, joggers and walkers in attendance.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. BLM, with considerable contributions from the Pit River Tribe, Modoc Wildlife Refuge, and Modoc National Forest, successfully built a traditional Pit River summer house. The experience taught school children and archaeologists alike valuable lessons including a traditional technology and that it truly takes a community to build a tule house.

(TORONTO - April 14, 2010) Internationally renowned Canadian artist Brian Jungen is the recipient of the 2010 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO for his outstanding contribution to visual arts in Canada. The Gershon Iskowitz Foundation and the AGO will celebrate the $25,000 prize at a public reception on May 6, and the AGO will mount an exhibition of Jungen's work in the coming year.
Born in 1970 in Fort St. John, British Columbia, to a Swiss father and a Dunne-za mother, Jungen has risen to prominence over the last decade by creating artwork that recasts traditional Indian symbology using ordinary objects such as plastic lawn chairs, golf bags, and Nike Air Jordans. He has exhibited extensively in Canada and internationally in venues including Tate Modern, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, which is currently staging a major retrospective of Jungen's work.
"Over the past decade, Brian Jungen has emerged as a leading Canadian artist of international significance," says David Moos, the AGO's curator of modern and contemporary art. "His work forces a reconsideration of the everyday object, which he infuses with sociopolitical commentary, historic symbology, and an ingenious sense of play."
The AGO currently holds four works by Jungen in its collection: Prototype for New Understanding #6 (1999), a work from Jungen's celebrated Prototypes series in which the artist transformed Nike Air Jordan sneakers into masks connoting the colours and styles of those of the Aboriginal Northwest Coast; and 1960, 1970, and 1980, three large-scale sculptures made from golf bags and assuming the form of totem poles.
Jungen was selected by the board of the Gershon Iskowitz Foundation. Board member Jay Smith says that Jungen was chosen "because of his singular vision, his technical innovation..."

The accomplishments and contributions of five Island seniors have helped build stronger communities across the province. That is why they’ve been named Prince Edward Island’s 2019 Senior Islanders of the Year.
Eileen Chiasson-Pendergast, Patrick Curley, Wanda MacLean, Paul H. Schurman and Isabel Yuill were recognized for their community leadership, spirit, and commitment to making Prince Edward Island great.
“Through their tireless volunteer efforts, mentorship, community activities, fund-raising, advocacy and overall positive attitude towards life, these Islanders have made a sustained and lasting impact on Prince Edward Island for the benefit of us all,” said Isabelle Christian, Chair of the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat.
The Senior Islanders of the Year award are given out annually to recognize the significant contribution of Island seniors in community life including volunteerism, artistic achievement, fund raising, community participation, fitness and recreation, and other activities. The recognition program is overseen by the PEI Seniors’ Secretariat.

Ambassador Betty King participated in a panel sponsored by the UN in Geneva to discuss the recently released papers “Making Change Happen: Enhancing the UN’s Contributions to Development” and “How Relevant is the Development UN?” Both papers were authored by the Future of the United Nations Development System (FUNDS) project of the Ralph Bunche Institute in New York. The paper “Making Change Happen: Enhancing the UN’s Contributions to Development” presents a comprehensive outline of how the UN development system will need to change and adapt to new realities, particularly in the context of structural and financing reforms. The paper suggests that all stakeholders in the UN development system will need to seek new ways of thinking that will lead to new paradigms or models in both areas. In her comments at the event, Ambassador King highlighted that the UN is both “indispensable” and “imperfect.” At its best, the UN can help prevent conflict, care for the needy, prevent deadly diseases, smooth the channels of global commerce, and promote values that we hold dear. She commended the authors of the study for their neat and concise divisions of the challenges the UN faces: 1) decentralization and rivalry, 2) ineffectiveness and irrelevance and 3) vested interests and lack of political will. She said that the world had evolved since the creation of the UN, yet despite our multi-polar world and a fast moving information age, much of the UN, especially the nuts and bolts of running it, is stuck around 1950.

(TORONTO - April 14, 2010) Internationally renowned Canadian artist Brian Jungen is the recipient of the 2010 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO for his outstanding contribution to visual arts in Canada. The Gershon Iskowitz Foundation and the AGO will celebrate the $25,000 prize at a public reception on May 6, and the AGO will mount an exhibition of Jungen's work in the coming year.
Born in 1970 in Fort St. John, British Columbia, to a Swiss father and a Dunne-za mother, Jungen has risen to prominence over the last decade by creating artwork that recasts traditional Indian symbology using ordinary objects such as plastic lawn chairs, golf bags, and Nike Air Jordans. He has exhibited extensively in Canada and internationally in venues including Tate Modern, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, which is currently staging a major retrospective of Jungen's work.
"Over the past decade, Brian Jungen has emerged as a leading Canadian artist of international significance," says David Moos, the AGO's curator of modern and contemporary art. "His work forces a reconsideration of the everyday object, which he infuses with sociopolitical commentary, historic symbology, and an ingenious sense of play."
The AGO currently holds four works by Jungen in its collection: Prototype for New Understanding #6 (1999), a work from Jungen's celebrated Prototypes series in which the artist transformed Nike Air Jordan sneakers into masks connoting the colours and styles of those of the Aboriginal Northwest Coast; and 1960, 1970, and 1980, three large-scale sculptures made from golf bags and assuming the form of totem poles.
Jungen was selected by the board of the Gershon Iskowitz Foundation. Board member Jay Smith says that Jungen was chosen "because of his singular vision, his technical innovation..."

On November 2, 2017, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) held the annual Awards Luncheon to celebrate and honor Department members who went above and beyond the call of duty.
Included in the presentations are three awards recognizing individual contributions to the LAFD.

While other pieces of art are long gone (for instance the two examples which I presented last September, see below), this tower of dark bricks is still standing strong. The 2010 NCL Literacy Leadership Awards Reception was held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, recognizing individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to improving literacy in the United States and included:
•Senator Thomas Harkin (IA), and his staff of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee who have been instrumental in supporting adult education at the federal level as well as representing the needs of America’s working families. David Johns of the HELP Committee was on hand to receive the award for Senator Harkin.
•Representative John Yarmuth (KY), a tireless advocate for literacy since his election in 2007, who has supported family literacy programs, championing Even Start programs for the most vulnerable families in poverty, and introducing the 2009 Literacy Education for All, Results for the Nation (LEARN) Act.
•English Under the Arches led by Betsy McKay, Director of Bilingual Leadership Development for McDonald’s USA LLC, for the award-winning program for developing English language and literacy skills for its bilingual managers and manager trainees.
•Kentucky Education Television (KET), Kentucky’s public broadcasting network since 1968, for their adult basic skills and workplace education series, Workplace Essential Skills and GED Connection, which are made available for free to 87% of American households through public broadcasting.
•Archie Willard, long time student advocate and leader who has nurtured the development of adult learner leaders, through his early support and leadership of VALUE, the national adult student organization.
Rep. Dan Maffei (NY) opened the event and announced the forming of a new House Adult Literacy Caucus, co-chaired by Rep. Maffei and Rep. Phil Roe (TN). The Adult Literacy Caucus aims to bring attention to the connections between literacy, economics and health and promote local, national, and global adult literacy initiatives.
The evening culminated with a celebration of the Congressional proclamation of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 13–19, which had been co-sponsored by Rep. Jared Polis (CO) . Rishton Cricket Club was formed in 1865 and became a founder member of the Lancashire League in 1982. Club professionals who were - or went on to become - stars on the world stage include Mohammad Azharuddin, Wayne Daniel, Allan Donald, Michael Holding and Viv Richards. The legendary Sydney Barnes was the Rishton professional between 1895 and 1899. At the time, league cricket was more lucrative than either county or Test action. Barnes helped Rishton secure their first championship in 1898. Rishton did the league and cup double in 1955. The club's most recent Lancashire League title triumph was in 2007.
