Another contribution to my Adelaide Buildings collection... My Fuji F11 does a pretty good job of low light photography and since I often ride home from work after dark I notice some buildings look more attractive then... like the recently renovated Maid & Magpie Hotel which the owners have done their best to make alluring to potential customers. I certainly think it is a smart stone and brick building typical of its period.

The Greater Greenville NC Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) recently made a financial contribution to the PCC Foundation in support of the Women In Construction Scholarship, which is awarded annually to students in PCC Construction and Industrial Technology programs. Presenting the $1,824-check to PCC Vice President of Institutional Advancement Susan Nobles (center) on behalf of NAWIC are Dr. Donna Hollar with East Carolina University's Construction Management Program (left) and Jenny Sutton of T.A. Loving, Inc.

Our modest contribution to the Expo: A model that was 3D printed in Belgium arrived destroyed, and AMOD was asked to do reparations.

We 3D printed replacement parts, glued and repaired this 1:50 model for the Belgian pavilion and the University of Gent.

The LEGO Foundation and UNICEF support conflict-affected children in Iraq through play

 

Baghdad, 16 December 2015 – UNICEF Iraq received a contribution from the LEGO Foundation that will help give around 50,000 children in Iraq a chance to play and learn. The organizations welcomed the contribution of 4,800 boxes containing LEGO play materials. The donation is part of the three-year global partnership between UNICEF and the LEGO Foundation signed in early 2015. Through the partnership, the two organizations promote quality early learning through play for children around the world. While play helps children address stress, it also performs a critical role in the development of the intellectual, emotional, social and creative skills needed to build the foundation for human development and lifelong learning.

 

Iraq has seen decades of conflict. Currently, nearly 3 million children have had their education disrupted, and nearly 1 million are internally displaced. Furthermore, over 100,000 Syrian children have taken refuge in Iraq.

 

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Ján Kubiš, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to children. “Many Iraqi children bear emotional scars from the violence around them, but it is those rendered homeless by conflict who suffer the heaviest consequences. Millions of children, in camps for displaced people and refugees as well as those in host communities have limited or no access to education or recreational activities. It is with their predicament in mind that UNAMI and UNICEF called on LEGO for assistance to extend children affected by the crisis in Iraq with a combination of study and play in the form of creative toys, which might be the first for many of them since they lost their homes and possessions. The donation from LEGO Foundation should be a reminder to Iraqi politicians of the responsibility they share for the future generations, who deserve to live a life of peace and normalcy.”

 

Generations of children in Iraq have grown up in the midst of conflict, and have witnessed unimaginable acts of extreme violence and have been displaced from their homes and communities. Some children have been displaced multiple times as conflict reaches their new homes. “The opportunity given by the LEGO Foundation should also be used to call for more support to humanitarian programmes, particularly child protection,” Kubiš added.

 

Representing UNAMI at the delivery ceremony in Baghdad, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Gyorgy Busztin appealed to the Iraqi politicians to think about the children of Iraq as they “are the hardest hit by violence and lack of stability. Their fate needs to be the responsibility of all decision makers. We want for them a happy future, away from violence, conflict and displacement in a country that provides equal rights to all its men, women and children. We want national reconciliation for Iraq that will give back to the children of Iraq what they were deprived of, play, learning and happiness, in other words a full childhood. The LEGO toys will teach them to build so that in the future they will be able to reconstruct their villages and towns ruined by terrorism. They will prove that building is superior to destruction” added DSRSG Busztin.

 

“The negative impact of this crisis on children cannot be over-emphasized,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF Representative in Iraq. “Continuing violence has cheated millions of children of their fundamental rights to safety, education and play. Many children have come into this world and grown up knowing only displacement and conflict. The donation from the LEGO Foundation is one positive step forward, allowing some of the most disadvantaged children to play and learn in a fun and safe environment and become the next generation to build a better future for Iraq.”

 

“Play is the most effective and inspiring way for children to acquire the skills needed to create new possibilities and meet the many challenges of the future. In the midst of violence and instability, playing and education can help to alleviate trauma for conflict-affected children,” said Mirjam Schöning, Global Head of Programmes and Partnerships at the LEGO Foundation. “Through play, children can address stress and develop physical, intellectual and social skills, as well as creativity. Together with UNICEF, we work to put a stake in the ground for children and their development through quality play-based learning.”

 

The LEGO play materials will be distributed to 538 schools, 46 community centres and 8 child-friendly spaces across Iraq, giving over 50,000 children access to learning activities. The LEGO Foundation and UNICEF will provide training to build the capacity of teachers, facilitators and community members who will then guide children through LEGO activities as part of the initiative.

To mark the arrival of the new UK Director and the launch of ESCP Europe's new Bachelor in Management, ESCP Europe's Dean, Dr Frank Bournois, hosted to an exclusive evening reception to unveil a new strategy for ESCP Europe.

 

This special event for alumni based in the UK was in collaboration with ESCP Europe Alumni, represented by its Deputy Chairman Laurent Sachs (EMBA 04), and the ESCP Europe Foundation, represented by its Chairman Patrick Gounelle (72).

 

The evening included a short presentation on the strategy and positioning of the School, with contributions from senior members of the Foundation and Alumni Association. It was followed by a networking drinks reception.

Remembrance Sunday, 8 November 2015

 

In the United Kingdom, Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918. Remembrance Sunday is held to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

 

Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials in most cities, towns and villages, attended by civic dignitaries, ex-servicemen and -women, members of local armed forces regular and reserve units, military cadet forces and uniformed youth organisations. Two minutes’ silence is observed at 11 a.m. and wreaths of remembrance poppies are then laid on the memorials.

 

The United Kingdom national ceremony is held in London at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Wreaths are laid by Queen Elizabeth II, principal members of the Royal Family normally including the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Earl of Wessex and the Duke of Kent, the Prime Minister, leaders of the other major political parties, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Commonwealth High Commissioners and representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets and the civilian services, and veterans’ groups. Two minutes' silence is held at 11 a.m., before the laying of the wreaths. This silence is marked by the firing of a field gun on Horse Guards Parade to begin and end the silence, followed by Royal Marines buglers sounding Last Post.

 

The parade consists mainly of an extensive march past by veterans, with military bands playing music following the list of the Traditional Music of Remembrance.

 

Other members of the British Royal Family watch from the balcony of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

 

After the ceremony, a parade of veterans and other related groups, organised by the Royal British Legion, marches past the Cenotaph, each section of which lays a wreath as it passes. Only ticketed participants can take part in the march past.

 

From 1919 until the Second World War remembrance observance was always marked on 11 November itself. It was then moved to Remembrance Sunday, but since the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 1995, it has become usual to hold ceremonies on both Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Other pieces of music are then played during the march past and wreath laying by veterans, starting with Trumpet Voluntary and followed by It's A Long Way To Tipperary, the marching song of the Connaught Rangers, a famous British Army Irish Regiment of long ago.

 

The following is complied from press reports on 8 November 2015:

 

"The nation paid silent respect to the country's war dead today in a Remembrance Sunday service. Leading the nation in remembrance, as ever, was the Queen, who first laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in 1945 and has done so every year since, except on the four occasions when she was overseas.

 

Dressed in her customary all-black ensemble with a clutch of scarlet poppies pinned against her left shoulder, she stepped forward following the end of the two-minute silence marked by the sounding of Last Post by 10 Royal Marine buglers.

 

The Queen laid her wreath at the foot of the Sir Edwin Lutyens Portland stone monument to the Glorious Dead, then stood with her head momentarily bowed.

 

She was joined by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who was invited to the Cenotaph for the first time to lay a wreath marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by British troops.

 

Watched by his wife Queen Maxima, who stood next to the Duchess of Cambridge in the Royal Box, the King laid a wreath marked with the simple message, 'In remembrance of the British men and women who gave their lives for our future.'

 

Wreaths were then laid by members of the Royal Family, all wearing military uniform: Prince Philip; then Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Prince William at the same time ; then Prince Edward, Princess Anne and the Duke of Kent at the same time.

 

Three members of the Royal Family laying wreaths at the same time was an innovation in 2015 designed to slightly reduce the amount of time of the ceremony and thereby reduce the time that the Queen had to be standing.

 

Prince Charles attended a remembrance service in New Zealand.

 

The Prime Minister then laid a wreath. The Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, appeared at the Cenotaph for the first time. He wore both a suit and a red poppy for the occasion.

 

His bow as he laid a wreath marked with the words 'let us resolve to create a world of peace' was imperceptible – and not enough for some critics. Yet unlike the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Battle service earlier this year, Mr Corbyn did join in with the singing of the national anthem.

 

Following the end of the official service at the Cenotaph, a mammoth column more than 10,000-strong (some 9,000 of whom were veterans) began marching along Whitehall, saluting the Cenotaph as they passed, Parliament Street, Great George Street, Horse Guards Road and back to Horse Guard Parade. The Duke of Cambridge took the salute from the column on Horse Guards Parade.

 

Time takes its inevitable toll on even the most stoic among us, and this year only a dozen World War Two veterans marched with the Spirit of Normandy Trust, a year after the Normandy Veterans' Association disbanded.

 

Within their ranks was 95-year-old former Sapper Don Sheppard of the Royal Engineers. Sheppard was of the eldest on parade and was pushed in his wheelchair by his 19-year-old grandson, Sam who, in between studying at Queen Mary University, volunteers with the Normandy veterans.

 

'It is because of my admiration for them,' he says. 'I see them as role models and just have the utmost respect for what they did.'

 

While some had blankets covering their legs against the grey November day, other veterans of more recent wars had only stumps to show for their service to this country during 13 long years of war in Afghanistan.

 

As well as that terrible toll of personal sacrifice, the collective losses – and triumphs - of some of the country’s most historic regiments were also honoured yesterday.

 

The Gurkha Brigade Association - marking 200 years of service in the British Army – marched to warm ripples of applause. The King’s Royal Hussars, represented yesterday by 126 veterans, this year also celebrate 300 years since the regiment was raised.

 

They were led by General Sir Richard Shirreff, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of Nato and Colonel of the regiment who himself was marching for the first time.

 

'We are joined by a golden thread to all those generations who have gone before us,” he said. “We are who we are, because of those that have gone before us.' "

Afghan Nation Army soldiers write down notes during a camouflage exercise at the Regional Training Military Centre (North) in Camp Shaheen near Mazar-e-Sharif.

Forty Canadian Forces advisors and support staff serve at RMTC(N) as part of the Canadian Forces contribution to the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan.

The training mission will see up to 950 Canadian Forces personnel serving at training camps and headquarters locations primarily in the Kabul area. Smaller contingents will serve at training institutions in Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat. The bulk of the Canadian contingent is scheduled to be deployed in Afghanistan by the fall of 2011.

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) celebrated the Birth Anniversary of Pai Tiatrist, Joao Agostinho Fernandes on Monday, 14th December 2015 at Pai Tiatrist auditorium, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

On this occasion TAG presented Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Awards to 6 tiatr artistes who have contributed immensely towards the development of tiatr stage. They are T. Britton, Sharon Mazarello, Xavier Gomes, Diniz Mestri, Fatima D’Souza and Lawrence de Tiracol. Shri. Vishnu Surya Wagh, Hon’ble M.L.A. and Chairman of Kala Academy Goa was the Chief Guest. Shri. Damodar Naik, Chaiman of Ravindra Bhavan – Margao as the Guest of Honour. Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, former President of Tiatr Academy as the Special Invitee.

Ross Craig (1926-2012) was a local historian born in Stockton and dedicated much of his life promoting and conserving the history of Stockton, NSW. He possessed a wealth of knowledge about the suburb and was a founding member of the Stockton Historical Society and co-editor of its magazine. Pat Craig supported her husband’s passion for history, and together they made a great contribution to the Stockton and Newcastle communities. We thank the Craig Family and Stockton Historical Society who have kindly given Cultural Collections at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, access to the collection and allowed us to publish the images. Thanks also to Vera Deacon for her liaison in attaining this important collection.

Over 1,300 personnel from all three armed services, veterans and cadets made the 2019 National Armed Forces Day parade in Salisbury the largest one to date. Originally conceived as Veterans Day, the name of the event was changed in 2009 to National Armed Forces Day to celebrate the contributions of both past and present members of the British Armed Forces. Taking place on the last Saturday of June, the parade is one aspect of a whole weekend where the national lead event is hosted by a different town or city each year around the UK.

 

The national event was held from 28 to 30 June 2019 in Salisbury and hosted by Wiltshire Council and its council leader Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE.

 

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne reviewed the parade on 29 June 2019 of more than 1,300 service personnel, cadets and veterans and took the salute on the dais in front of the Guildhall, accompanied by the Mayor of the City of Salisbury John Walsh, as the procession went by. The parade was preceded by a fly past by the Red Arrows at 10 am. The parade was led by a detachment from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, followed by bands and marching contingents from the three armed services, veterans and cadets and finished with the British Army units which hold the Freedom of the City of Salisbury.

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster David Lidington, Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt, senior military officers and civic dignitaries also watched the parade.

 

Defence Secretary, Penny Mordaunt said: “On Armed Forces Day we celebrate the exceptional contribution service personnel, regular or reservist, veterans and their families make to our security and prosperity. The Armed Forces protect us and defend us around the world and serve communities throughout our country. With more than 300 events taking place across the UK, it’s incredible to see people coming together to show their support for the Armed Forces.”

 

The national event provided an opportunity to welcome the troops returning from Germany to Wiltshire, as one-quarter of the British regular army will be based in the county by 2020.

 

The Armed Forces and Salisbury have a close and historic relationship and the national event gave the people of Salisbury the chance to thank the Armed Forces for their tireless support towards the city’s recovery following the Novichok poison attacks in 2018.

 

Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “Wiltshire is the beating heart of the Armed Forces and we are extremely proud of our long association with the military. The Armed Forces Day National Event is a unique opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to the specialist military teams, the emergency services and the other organisations that managed the incident and the subsequent clean-up that has helped south Wiltshire to return to normal.”

 

Students from ten regions across South Sudan have been praised for their winning essays, which have highlighted women’s contribution to durable peace in the country.

 

Three of the best students writers received trophies at an event in the country’s capital, on Wednesday, May 9th where hundreds gathered to briefly hear from some of the students, government representatives and the head of the United Nations’ Mission in South Sudan.

 

The student essays highlighted the need for women to be involved in national building; conflict resolution; ending tribalism; unity, and economic development, among other issues.

 

Ninety high schools participated in the essay competition.

Contribution to the war effort took all means

This is a photograph from the 4th and final round of the 2015 Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 27th May 2015 at 20:00. The weather was perfect for running and racing again and gave bright sunshine with some breeze. The weather conditions were favourable for runners this evening. As this was the final night of a very successful league there were many category prizes up for grabs with runners having to ensure they ran their races to gain the required finish times for the overall calculations. There was a great atmosphere at the finish as spectators cheered on the runners. This year's 5KM is ran on a modified route based on the route from the last couple of years. The final 1KM is within the Belvedere Gardens bringing runners down to the lakeside for a second time and finishing along the aptly named Stream Of Life. The route modification means that the race offers a slightly faster route than the hill finish of previous years. In the prize giving and awards in Belvedere House Cafe there were refreshments served for runners and this brought the curtain down on the Road League for 2015.

The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Runners can also choose to just run one race without being considered for the overall league placings. Over 330 people took part in tonight's event bring the total from the four nights to so far to well over 1,400 runners. As with all of the previous weeks the new finish area provided a nice space for runners to stay around and chat in the evening sunshine. The Mullingar Road League 2015 is now over but has continued successfully and looks to add to the success in the history of this great series. Despite the bright evenings the photographic conditions in Belevedere are difficult so this photograph is part of a smaller than usual photograph set as there were many blurred photographs this evening.

The "Road League" is something of a misnomer but is an indication of the League's origins on the roads around Ladestown Mullingar prior to it's move into Belvedere in 2008. The Road League is the envy of many other races in the country as the Belvedere locations offers a completely traffic free 5KM route.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

No.1 Angel Lane is an architecturally distinguished 525,000 sq.ft development occupying the largest area of open riverside space in the City of London. It forms the focal point of the new business district connecting the river and the heart of the City.

The sixth-floor terrace - the size of eight tennis courts - has unobstructed, panoramic views of the river Thames. It is open to staff and clients to eat al fresco during the summer months while enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the gardens, its water features and London's breathtaking scenery.

The formal gardens are planned and maintained by Tony and Matt of ISS Facilities Landscaping. With over 50 years' experience between them, the hedges, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ferns, herbs and grasses - as well as the lawns - are kept in pristine condition for employees and visitors to enjoy.

The kitchen garden measures 56ft by 20ft. Managed voluntarily by the switchboard team of Eileen, Linda and Tessa, it was cleared to make 12 vegetable beds. The team designed and drew up a growing plan, the seeds were started off from home and the garden came alive!

Now in its fourth year, with about 25 different varieties of vegetables and edible flowers, the garden provides an array of produce, enabling the chefs to pick fresh vegetables daily for client dining. The surplus is offered for sale to staff, with profits donated to charity.

During 2014 Nomura were awarded Best Large Garden at the Flowers in the City Awards. They were also awarded Outstanding Food Grower (Commercial) and Outstanding Contribution to City Green Spaces at the City in Bloom Awards 2015.

This is my contribution to the "Stop It' show, 9/10/2011 at Munky King, Los Angeles. The theme of the show revolves around drawing awareness to bullying. I was honored to be asked by the curator, Super Cooper Berella, to participate and hope that my piece conveys a bit of the theme appropriately. This original sculpture was created from epoxy, polymer clay, metal and craft porcelain.

"Cooper Berella (aka SuperCooper), a 12 year old artist, art collector, and supportive member of the art community, is curating his second art show at Munky King Gallery in Los Angeles. “Stop It!” opens on Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 6-10pm. The theme of the show is meant to draw awareness to bullying and cyberbullying. Cooper has confirmed over 70 artists from around the world to participate in the show. Paintings, drawings, custom toys, and prints expressing the artists’ view of bullying will be on display. Part of the proceeds from the show will be donated to GLIDE (Gays and Lesbians Initiating a Dialog for Equality) and CHIME Institute (an organization dedicated to inclusive education where kids of all abilities learn together). Zamindar Family of Teota

Zamindar Family of Teota' was one of the large landholders based in Teota of manikganj district. Founded by one Panchanan Chaudhuri, born (c. 1740) into the Dasgupta family of Shaitghar-Teota in western Manikganj, the 'Sankars' (the family middle name) were a relatively progressive, enlightened and unostentatious zamindar family. A number of its members made notable contributions to public life at all Bengal level.

The Teota zamindari comprised a number of estates spread out in the districts of Dhaka, Faridpur and Pabna, and Dinajpur along with some small properties in Rangpur and Burdwan. In 1914, the Dinajpur properties alone were valued at over Rs 11 lakhs. The estate paid over Rs. 60,000 in annual government revenue, and was managed by educated and trained officials. It would also appear that this estate was comparatively generous towards its employees ' among other things, it paid a 'dearness allowance', and took care of the medical expenses and 'living costs' of its staff. The head office/ manager's office was at Teota, and the estate was broadly divided into a few circles, each having a number of kachharis under it. The Teota zamindari remained undivided for almost a hundred and fifty years. By 1920, however, it had been amicably partitioned into the eight anna Teota Joy Sankar Estate, and other smaller shares. The zamindari ended with the abolition of zamindari system, and the acquisition of the estates by the government, under the provisions of the EAST BENGAL STATE ACQUISITION AND TENANCY ACT of 1950.

Panchanan Chaudhuri, the founder of the family, began his 'career' away from home, in Dinajpur. His earliest investments, it seems, had been in the tobacco trade, in which he flourished. With the profits earned from his lucrative business, he soon started to invest in land when a land market was created under the operation of the Permanent Settlement. He acquired his earliest properties in the Dinajpur region. Some time later, he returned to his ancestral village, and established himself as the first zamindar of Teota. A devout vaisnab, it was also during his time that 'Sridhar' came to be the 'family-god', Panchanan being the first 'sebaiyat'. He lived till ninety-three, and saw in his own lifetime the zamindari maturing into one of the largest in Eastern Bengal.

Very little is known about Panchanan Chaudhuri's only son, Kali Sankar, who died very young, in his early thirties, but left behind two sons ' Joy Sankar and Tarini Sankar (born, 1800s-1810s). Both of them were brought up to be 'traditional' aristocrats (of the 'Nawabi Bengal' mould), the younger Tarini Sankar having even been sent to Murshidabad for his education. However, he did not have a long life, and died in his thirties, and was survived by Shyama Sankar (later RAJA SHYAMA SANKAR RAY BAHADUR of Teota) and Pran Sankar.

Joy Sankar considerably augmented the inherited properties. He undertook such welfare activities as the digging of ponds and the construction of roads, besides generously maintaining the 'atithi-sala' (guest house) at Teota set up by his grandfather. He, however, decided to renounce his family and his worldly possessions, and left for Puri ' one of the best destinations for a practising vaisnab ' leaving his two minor sons (Parbati Sankar and Hara Sankar) under the care of their mother and grandmother. It was there that he died shortly afterwards (c 1860). His sons later built a 'dharamsala' in his memory at Gaya (in Bihar), and also made the necessary initial arrangements for a 'math' to be founded at the site of his cremation in Puri.

The next generation of the family saw a marked shift towards the metropolis. Although the (first) Calcutta residence of the family had been built at 50, Darmahutta Street (now Maharshi Debendra Road) in the Pathuriaghata area in the 1820s, it was only from the sixties that male members of the family began to live in the city for extended periods. The ladies of the family left the village much later, in the 1880s or 1890s, when a new, more sprawling residence was built at 44, European Asylum Lane. That apart, the family also had a number of residential houses elsewhere. The Teota rajbari in Benaras (there were two, in fact) have been immortalised by BIBHUTIBHUSHAN BANDYOPADHYAY's novel, and subsequently by the SATYAJIT RAY film, 'Aparajita'.

The eldest among the four cousins of this generation, Shyama Sankar Roy, was a noted philanthropist, an enterprising landlord who made numerous attempts at improvements and innovations in agriculture, and a Theosophist. He was conferred the personal title of 'Raja' in the 1877s. RAI PARBATI SANKAR CHAUDHURI was also an 'imaginative' zamindar. Among other things, he introduced the system of co-operative grain banks (dharmagola) within the zamindari, and was one of the founders of the INDIAN INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION. Hara Sankar Ray, who was a Presidency College graduate and had a degree in law, was an honourary magistrate (of Teota). The next generation saw yet another shift, with many of the cousins being sent to British universities for their first degrees and legal training at the Inns of Court, although only one of them, Dr Kumar Sankar Ray, turned out to be a 'professional' in later life. KS Ray, a non-practising barrister and a philanthropist, was prominently involved in Congress electoral politics and represented Bengal (along with a few others) at the Council of States in New Delhi in the 1930s and 40s. The best-known names in the generation were however: the politician, KIRON SANKAR ROY, and KUMUD SANKAR RAY (Dr KS Ray), the medical luminary and Swarajya-Congress leader.

The family seat was at Teota ' an expansive complex, close to the bank of Jamuna, comprising a maze of courtyards and buildings, the earliest ones dating from the early nineteenth century, and the most recent from the early 1900s. The remarkable Navaratna adjoining the rajbati, built in honour of the family god and used during the 'Dol' festival, is among the tallest and most elegant ones of its kind. The 'High/ Entrance School' in the village, called Teota Academy, founded by the Teota Zamindar Family in the 1880s was ' apart from the town school ' for a long time the only one in Manikganj sub-division, now a district. The school also had a 'boarding' for resident scholars, and its students used to stay at the 'Bahir-bari' of the Calcutta residence of the Sankars when appearing for the University matriculation and other examinations. Besides this, there was a 'pathsala' and a charitable dispensary maintained by the estate. Also, Teota was one of the very few places in the district having a sitting honorary magistrate and a 'bench'.

The big structures of the zamindar family still survive though abandoned and left uncared since 1957. These are now occupied by squatters. Structurally, the magnificent Teota buildings carry the spirit and technique of the blends of Mughal and European architecture. [R Roy]'
