Eco Superior asked me to do an Earth Hour Comparison on March 28th and 29th from Mount Mckay. I made it up there on the 28th and took images, thanks to Margie and her 4 wheel drive, but she was busy on the 29th so could not get a comparison image at the same time. My beetle never would have made it! After Mount Mckay I headed to Hillcrest to take some images, but obviously it was later in the evening and much darker. Anyway, this is the comparison, and while I was out I did notice that there was a lot of participation in making Earth Hour a success! Good work Thunder Bay! :)
Just a picture where you can compare!, L to R: Scarlett (J-Doll Camden High st. I), my new girl without name yet (J-Doll st. Sauveur), Salem (J-Doll Camden High st. II)
Elfdoll Eun-A head (Normal Skin) on April Story Senior Girl body (Normal Skin, 56 cm)
In my opinion, although this ED head isn't really big, the hole doll looks a little bobble-head. Anyway, the Eun-A is the only ED head that I've got that matches better in proportions with this body.
About color matching, they don't match at all (it's worst in real life than in pictures, trust me) ;)
This is a comparison between the Photoshop RAW conversion and Nikon Capture conversion of an NEF file from my D70. The full black and white version of the image can be found here. Make sure to look at the full size image to really see the difference. All settings were left to their defaults, using the recorded color temperature.
The reason for this is compare how Photoshop processes RAW images compared to Nikon's supplied software. Photoshop appears to ignore all data in the file besides the color temperature. It also uses a less contrasty response curve, resulting in images that appear very flat.
The left half is the Nikon Capture image and the right half is the Photoshop RAW image. The Nikon conversion definitely lifts values more and provides better separation between dark areas and midtones. The difference between the concrete and the dirt at the top, along with the increased detail on the metal fixture, shows this off nicely.

A huge number of children is being ignored from the love of their mother due to many reasons. They don't contain any identity as well, as they have no family. They can't express the happiness in the occasions and festivals as the other normal children does. No one even looks at them. The picture above shows the comparison between the two which is ignored by us everyday. This is sad, but true. The ignored comparison is going on and is increasing everyday.
Providing a handy comparison, meanwhile, is one of the remaining seven Beachcombers which still have half their roofs attached. Taking a look at their MOT records, they were last passed back in September, so it can't be that... what could it possibly be that needs work in the dead of winter? And, I have to ask, is it work that Scarborough depot can't do? I wonder whether the coming works to build a new all-singing all-dancing Scarborough bus depot may lessen the need for these long-haul maintenance runs?
That and moaning about not having my camera out aside, Scarborough Locals' 'Beachcomber' branded 20892, a 2005 Volvo B7TL Wright Eclipse Gemini new to Travel London as their V46, latterly being Abellio London's 9046 and being issued as East Yorkshire's 892 in old money, is seen as part of a pair of Beachcombers in convoy down Holderness Road.
Adding more into the colour-comparisons mix, I've now included multiple beta DNG profiles and the default rendering from Canon's own latest version of Digital Photo Professional.
I'm actually quite impressed by the beta DNG profile's results. On the Camera Standard setting (not the Adobe Standard setting), they seem to be just a touch more saturated than the standard DPP rendering, yet retain the same general colouring as DPP.
The Rags and Chromoholics calibrations both appear to over-saturate the reds to varying degrees, while also flattening the specular highlights on the car to be almost completely white, vs. the highlights on the others rendering a warmer orange.
Still worth noting that the fluorescent lights of the scene could be a key factor in throwing off the colour rendering from the calibrations (which were based on bright sunlight), but certainly for minimal hassle the new beta DNG profiles look very promising: better than DPP and far better than the old Camera Raw profiles.
The beta DNG profiles are available here:
- labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles
(Note: you will need Lightroom 2.0 (non-beta) or Camera Raw 4.5 to use them.)
For the calibrated versions, I rather prefer the Rags version of the ACR Calibrator as it seems the Chromoholics version has far over-saturated the red (to the point where the specular highlights are even lost). The difference between the two, if I understand the detailed technical language, is that the Rags version attempts to find the best changes to the primary colour channels while averaging the best results across all colour patches. The Chromoholics version, on the other hand, only pays any attention to the primary colour patches and optimises those, without any apparent regard for the rest of the colour patches.
Perhaps even one step better will be to create a customized profile with the new restructured DNG profiling combined with a ColorChecker chart:

(Look for an update on that later...)
Ever wanted to see the difference betwen different raw converters? Here you can see how the various Raw Converters deal with a Foveon X3 raw file. First is Lightroom, second SPP 3.2, third Raw Developer. Fourth is direct extraction from the raw file via Pavel Sokolov's neat tool . Fifth is the same with auto curves applied in Photoshop. Sixth is number five with saturation cranked up by 50.
The comparison is of course flawed due to three reasons:
1. SPP and LR versions contain minor WB adjustments to get rid of obvious casts (I shot with custom WB but apparently a bad one).
2. Sharpening differs between the raw converters, the first three raw conversions apply a certain amount of default sharpening with different algorithms.
3. Different adjustment controls and different UIs may make you get more out of one particular raw converter even though it does not look so good in the above example - I kept the adjustments at an absolute minimum.
Still it gives an impression on some differences between the routines. To compare, just open up two instances of the original size and have a pairwise look.
Lightroom (image no.1) has the least detail as a consequence of the least default sharpening -or the strongest noise reduction. The latter might be necessary due to the extra boost in brightness which is applied to the raw files. CAs are most visible in the LR version but note that LR provides a lens correction section allowing to remove fringing.
Sigma Photo Pro (image 2) sits right in the middle between Lightroom and Raw Developer, both in terms of brightness and sharpening. The (almost) default output is better than Lightroom's but worse than Raw Developer's in my opinion. Needs to be added here that depending on the actual scene, the RD approach or the LR approach can be better. Sometimes, the expense of 2/3 stops o brightness at the benefit of an extra bit of color fidelity can make a big difference to the overall quality of an image- in other cases, even Raw Developer cannot keep an image dark enough to avoid artifacts of its rather aggressive color matching (blue noise) and needs to resort to the built-in Noise reduction functions, with a negative effect on chromatic detail. It thus seems that SPP as the native Sigma converter is optimised to give good results for an as wide as possible range of lightning conditions.
Raw Developer (no. 3) is the darkest of the three "real" raw converters. It appears to use the resulting additional leeway (remember there is more data stored/there are more bits assigned to higher luminance ranges than to lower ones - this is why when you pull down the exposure of an image in postprocessing, there is less noise in the shadows) in a more aggressive color matching, hence the more neutral colors right from the start. The usually problematic rendition of bright reds is managed best here. The default sharpeing from RD is the strongest - for off-/online resizing I would decrease it a fair bit, For viewing the original size it is okay. Maybe due to the more conservative approach on adding brightness, the chromatic aberrations are least visible in Raw Developer.
Pavel's X3F extractor gets you a tiff file containing the raw image data, as captured by the Foveon sensor (no.4). Note that most likely any raw image data looks as dull, this is not a Foveon-only "feature". Not sure whether there is a software to prove this though. With auto curves in Photoshop the brightness is up to (about) the level of the other conversions (no.5). A rather hefty boost of the saturation gives the image some color (no. 6), but it could still use more. I really like the water color of the "tuned" final version.
In sum I like Raw Developer best straight from the conversion. Second is the slightly subdued "pimped" output of Pavel's tool. Third is SPP and LR has the worst output. LR is still my overall fav because it allows for quick and detailed adjustments to tune the image to taste. For certain jobs it might be worth to consider using Pavel's converter and applying curves and saturation in PS, although this is quite a hassle - even more so when you plan to tune certain colors (in the above example, the reds could have used this). I really like the water color of the rightmost version (tuned x3f extraction). Here you can see an optimized version which I consider at least up to par with the default output of the commercial raw converters.
BTW the raw file was exposed spot on, no fill light, no exposure pushing, no clippings. A B&W 502 ND Grad Filter was used for the shot.

Converted Leica Summicron-R 50mm f2 on the left, Nikkor AF-D 50mm f1.4 on the right. Both at f2, same position and ISO.
Seems after trying to fine tune focus, and trying different settings this is the best I could get the Nikkor to be on spot.
They're both focused on the same spot, middle of the film strip.
Taken with my D600 and converted with Adobe Camera RAW.

This is a comparison of some commonly confused species of eastern dragonflies. The two females of the species are very similar in their wing markings, but have a tell-tale difference - the Twelve-spotted Skimmer females have a straight abdominal stripe, while Common Whitetail females have diagonal dashes along the abdomen (see note).
Similarly, the immature members of the species can be difficult to ID. The immatures of each are under the adult females. The immature Twelve-spotted Skimmers are similar to the adult females, but their abdominal stripe is much fainter - imm. males will slowly gain the colors in their wings to resemble an adult male as they mature.
Immature male Common Whitetails have the same diagonal stripes along the abdomen, but have a wing pattern that more closely resemble the adults.

A side by side comparison with an enhanced rendering of the Patterson Gimlin creature. The proportions seem to be quite similar.
And here are some comparisons to Live Action Christie since I find her to be interesting as the only Midge sculpt in dark vinyl.
Also I keep reading how everyone thinks ALL vintage Christie dolls used a recoloured Midge head, when Midge has a much bigger mouth in comparison to Julia/Christie as well as a different jawline. Comparing them side by side I can see how they modified the Midge sculpt to turn into Christie (the nose and eye sculpts give it away) but I think it’s different enough to not call it a direct Midge recolour.
Soo what does the Transmilenio cost? The early phase was $5.3 million USD/ km.. For comparison LRTs can range about $15 to $45 million USD/km. More recent phases improvements have cost more (fancy terminals, etc), but for the price of a bare-bones LRT one can have an extremely feature-rich BRT (proper enclosed stations that are universally accessible, pre-paid boarding, etc).
So what about capacity? Well here's a surprising tidbit of information:
The Transmilenio has a capacitiy of over 40,000 ppdph (people per direction, per hour, on a single line. By comparison something like Vancouver BC's new Airport Line has been specified to for a maximum 25,000 ppdph.
The Vancouver line is costing over $200 million per km - but at least it is fully above or below grade and will never suffer from traffic light breaks, or slow-operation-in-the-city like many at grade LRTs. Vancouver at least skipped the surface LRT costs and went straight underground.
How about speed? The average speed of the Transmilenio 26 kmph - not so shabby either.
