Here Abide Monsters by Andre Norton [review 0848 - Fantasy novel]

  

The fantasy novel "Here Abides Monsters" by Andre Norton (1912-2005) was first published in 1973. For this reader, a sincere admirer of her books, it was a challenging yet ultimately rewarding reading experience and I can recommend this title.

 

Our young male protagonist, Nick Shaw, is troubled by a new step-mother who is infringing on his life and his relationship with his dad. He's looking forward to getting away alone to the family camp for some relaxation, fishing and time to sort out his future. Nick is introspective, self-reliant and resourceful. In fact he is the typical young male character Norton used to great success in her many science-fiction novels. While helping a young lady, Linda Durant, find a friend's camp they are somehow transported to a land populated with a menagerie of magical beings, monsters - most out of British folklore; many groups of other disorientated transported folks; two types of warring flying saucers; and an unapproachable fairy like castle.

Nick and Linda meet and join up with a group from WW2 era England who somehow had escaped from a crashed saucer. Most of the book consist of interactions between the group members, observing the incredible inhabitants of the land and stealthily traveling from one refuge to another seeking safety and food. Talk of escape and return to home and what exactly is the purpose of the land are major topics of discussion. We are never enlightened to any firm conclusions - just speculations dictated by limited understanding of the significance of their unwelcome existence.

The land starts to exhibit a miasma of increasing dark menacing creatures and some cryptic warnings are given to the group. Are the dreaded creatures a reflection of personal fears or is a major conflagration about to take place? As the book concludes a desperate escape attempt results in a inconclusive ending of the story.

 

Norton wrote no further books concerning this land which is untypical of her. Early in the story Nick Shaw and a store keeper friend discuss local folks who have apparently "disappeared" or have been "taken" never to return. Some actual books: "Our Haunted Planet"[1971] by John A. Keel; "More Things"[1969] by Ivan Sanderson and books by Charles Fort are discussed in light of the historical disappearances in the area. To say the least this is a strange book but it does tie in to Norton's major interest in the occult and folklore which are main topics of many of her later books. A strange story that kept my interest told by a master story teller.

 

This novel was written by Ms. Norton with no "collaborator" listed on the cover. I am very skeptical of Ms. Norton involvement with the many collaborations that were published very late in her life. I suspect that for the most part a contract writer was hired to expand upon a theme and characters from one of her series with just the permission to use her name. Therefore for this fan only those books attributed solely to "Andre Norton" are her true cannon of works and the others are very suspect indeed - read at your owe risk - buyers beware as they say.

The Courts is an early Georgian mansion built in the baroque style. It was described as newly-built in 1731 when it and adjacent dyehouse and workshops belonged to the clothier John Phelps. At the end of the 18th century a woollen cloth factory was built there, but all the industrial works were demolished a century later.

 

The Courts Gardens were initially designed by Dr [later Sir] George Hastings 1902-1905. Much of what can be seen today was planted by Major Clarence and Lady Cecilie Goff between 1921 and 1943, when he gave it and the house to the National Trust.

 

The village of Holt is a compact rectangular settlement set in an oddly shaped parish, with a ‘tail’ of land south of Forewoods Common, that includes Great Bradford Wood and Lady Down Farm. This seems to have come about because Holt was part of the ancient manor and parish of Bradford and when the urban boundaries of Bradford were defined as roughly circular, this area of land lay outside them and could only be given to Holt. The manor house of Holt lies to the north west of the village and has had no settlement associated with it since medieval times. The river Avon is in the south of the parish and forms part of the southern boundary while the Kennet and Avon canal passes through the southernmost part of the parish.

127 comments under the Facebook posting, to a province-wide group, of a photo that a photographer took of three people, one of them myself - angry, rude, critical, judgemental comments, by people who don't even know me or my ethics, including when they relate to photography! Last night, I found the posting again and took a long time going through all 127 comments. Made me feel sick to the stomach. This can't be right, though I know this kind of thing does happen on Facebook. I want the photo removed or for the photographer to at the very least completely blur me out of the shot. Though his comment, when he first posted his photo, was about people staying safe when taking photos, he has allowed the posting to develop into an endless bashing.

 

I wasn't going to post this again, but I have changed my mind after reading all those comments. I sent the man a link to one of my owl photos that has this long description with it, asking him to read, when he has time, what I have written. The link was sent only two or three days ago, so he may not have seen it yet.

 

""I think the very first Long-eared Owl that I ever saw was seen on 13 October 2006. SInce then, I have been very fortunate to have seen several other individuals - including the day before yesterday. These owls are very secretive and many birders go years between sightings. It is so important not to give the location of this species. Be careful that there is nothing in your photos that gives away the location.

 

Various people had been posting photos of a Long-eared Owl recently, but I had no idea where they were seeing it. Someone had posted a photo and labelled it "Calgary" (totally untrue!), so I had thought it must have been seen in one of our local city parks. Two days ago, I decided to go for a short drive and get a bit of sunshine and fresh air. Our deep freeze has lasted for more than four weeks, and I have been home for most of that time. It was a milder day, so I decided to make the most of it, especially with more snow forecast for today.

 

Imagine my surprise when a stranger told me just where it was, and my absolute horror when I came upon a huge crowd of photographers with their lenses raised! So how did they all know about this owl?? Apparently, Facebook has such a bad reputation for people trolling everyone's photostream there, finding out locations for all sorts of things (old barns included!). Then, of course, some people phone others, to ask or to tell. Others follow ebird religiously, dashing out to see every more 'special' bird that is reported and location given. I don't post many photos on Facebook and I certainly don't post the same photo to three groups. It gets so very boring to see the same photos everywhere. These people flood their own Facebook pages and the groups! The only reason I can see is to get as many Likes as possible. Anyway, most people were down in the ditch at the fenceline, so no doubt they were able to get stunning close shots, especially those with enormous lenses. My photos were taken from the road, which was twice as far away, with a point-and-shoot. I'm not out to try and get better photos than anyone else : ) As always, there is so much competition among photographers. I was also not out there all day, like various people always are, and often day after day after day.

 

So, after saying those things, perhaps you can imagine how extremely upset (devastated, actually) I am to have been told (when I arrived at the owl) by a couple of friends (both of whom are superb photographers) that my photograph had been taken, along with two other people in it, standing at the edge of a road earlier in February. These friends thought it was hilarious and I sure was teased a lot. As they said, my "goody two-shoes" image was gone. They both know I have very high ethics, including when it comes to photography. This photo was posted on Facebook on a provincial birding page, pointing out how dangerous it is for people to stand by the road. This thread turned into a string of comments about people harassing the owls, etc., etc., etc. Actually, the other two people in the photo are both seen taking photos (when I was told they already had taken thousands). There's me, camera not raised, looking disgusted that an owl had been flushed so that they could take flight images. The reason I was out of my vehicle was that these two people were out of theirs and racing down the road at top speed to get yet more shots. When I was sitting in my car, these photographers blocked my view of the owl, so out I got and caught up with them. To prove that I was not planning on getting out of my car this trip, I was wearing just my thin summer jacket (over fleece) in a windchill in the minus 20C's. Two minutes later, I was back in my car!

 

Sorry to rant, but it just upsets me so much that this photo was taken and posted on Facebook. Have barely slept the last two nights! The very last thing I would ever want is to be connected with bad ethics!! Of course, I must be such a bad person to actually stand by the road - ha, you should see all the dozens of people who do exactly the same (without being photgraphed)!

 

That day, I took maybe 30 photos of the Long-eared Owl, and maybe a couple of dozen of a Short-eared Owl, almost every single one of the latter needing to be deleted, because they were all totally blurry, thanks to taking the photos from inside my car. You can be sure that most of the others went home with yet another memory card containing thousands of photos.

 

I am hoping that now I won't be stressing out over it quite as much, every second of the day! Ain't life fun? To the man who took my photo (as far as I know, I have never met him), how about taking a few photos of the crowds of people, especially those who were as close as they could get to the LEO. Or those who stress out the owls day after day after day, often from morning till evening! You might just get lots of likes and comments on photos of those repeat "offenders". How about giving it a try?

 

PS: I rarely allow people (i.e. friends) to photograph me. Not sure what right this man thinks he has, to take my photo and especially to then post it on a very popular Facebook group page. I want it removed from Facebook, or at the very least, to have myself totally blurred out of the image. When this sort of thing happens, it can totally destroy a person's joy of photography!

 

Actually, on a more serious note, something that I'm sure most people don't think of. You really need to be careful about taking a photo of someone and then posting it (without signing a consent form). For various security reasons, doing this could actually put someone in danger. For example, a woman (or vice versa) might not want their photo being advertised in this way, not wanting an abusive spouse/partner to know where they go sometimes or what they do. Just something to keep in mind."

Leeds Pride 2019 - words are wholly inadequate to describe what an amazing day this was. The outpouring of love and togetherness was jaw-dropping, the crowds along the streets were even bigger than last year! My favourite day of the year, as has been the case for the last 3 years since my first one.

 

It makes me fill up just going back through all these memories.

The Mobile Emergency Room is a project by Thierry Geoffroy/Colonel, a participating artist of the Maldives Pavilion working with art formats developed around the notion of emergency.

Emergency Room is a format providing space for artists to engage in urgent debates, address societal dysfunctions and express emergencies in the now, today, before it is too late. Geoffroy’s approach allows immediate artistic intervention and displaces the contemporary to the status of delayed comment on yesterday’s world.

Taking as point of departure climate change and the Maldives, Geoffroy developed a scenario of disappearance and translated actual emergencies and hospitality needs into artistic interventions. In this context he activated his penetration format in order to transform “rigid exhibition spaces” into “elastic and generous exhibition spaces”.

An intervention facilitated by curator Christine Eyene, the Mobile Emergency Room was set up at the Zimbabwe Pavilion during the opening week of the biennale with the hospitality of commissioner Doreen Sibanda and curator Raphael Chikukwa. The first pieces presented in this room consisted in Geoffroy’s tent and an installation by Polish artist Christian Costa. Since then it has been animated online and has extended from being a space for artists expressing emergencies about climate change, to encompassing various emergency topics.

From 24 to 28 August, Geoffroy was in Venice collaborating with Danish artists Nadia Plesner, Mads Vind Ludvigsen, who created new work everyday, raising various emergencies and concerns, with a daily change of exhibition (“passage”) at 3.00 pm. For his last day in Venice, Geoffroy addressed the Syrian situation.

 

The work produced during this intervention is displayed until 30 September. The presentation is based on Geoffroy's concept of "Delay Museum" where art created for past emergencies is exhibited, while new work enters the Mobile Emergency Room.

Because of the ridiculous hotel prices over Jubille weekend, it was decided to move Leeds First Friday to the second Friday instead. And it was a very quiet weekend, not just for the event but Leeds itself was really quiet.

 

I got to meet the lovely Jennifer Lees for the first time. She's gorgeous and an absolute blast - she's got a crazy long tongue too and doesn't mind showing it off! LOL!

My last week off before going back to work, I went for a day out in York to meet my friend Sarah who was down from Newcastle.

 

What a lovely day out! We had a Yorkshire Pudding wrap for lunch before a wander around a visiting a few bars.

 

The last bar Sarah took me to was Evil Eye, a cocktail bar she knows. Wow, the menu was extensive to say the least! I don't drink alcohol and usually the mocktail selection is perhaps 2 or 3 but there were 26 mocktails available!

 

Such a quirky place as well, all sorts of quirky decorations and touches. I loved it!

I went to see the one man show Buffy Revamped with my dear friend Simon. It was brilliant!

 

Buffy The Vampire Slayer remains one my my all-time favourite shows, and this was a hilarious take one it. I highly recommend going to see it if it's touring near you and you loved the TV show.

Comment faire son grand connaisseur en vins ?

 

Pour commenter un vin, il faut éviter les termes réellement techniques (robe, cuisse, nez et autres jambe) qui nous feront passer pour un guignol si on ne connaît pas bien ce à quoi ils s’appliquent.

Les éléments qui sont caractéristiques sont la zone d’appellation, la géologie de la région, le climat, les cépages et la vinification. Avec un peu de chance, trois des éléments seront indiqués sur une des étiquettes.

Une fois les généralités sur ces choses dites, il faut parler « d’expression », de « saveurs » de « notes », de « textures » et de « senteurs » en n’hésitant pas à les associer à des qualificatifs d’un autre champ de vocabulaire comme celui de la géométrie (rond, droit, anguleux,…) ou des textiles (soyeux, chatoyant, etc…).

Trouvez quelque chose sur son mode de récolte (l’exemple, dans le texte, est poussé au bout, mais c’est à tenter)

Pour finir, dites ce que le vin accompagne à merveille avec force détails sur …les détails.

 

Élaboré dans les massifs calcaires de la Clape par un processus de vinification naturelle égrappée, ce vin manifeste le savoir-faire ancestral étayé par des siècles de recherches et d’expérimentation dans l’élevage en fûts de chêne des vignerons de ces terroirs viticoles depuis plus de deux millénaires.

Sur une première expression soyeuse de fruits rouges et de pêches, il délivre des senteurs arrondies qui enrobent la texture minérale et rectiligne que lui donne son terroir gagné à la roche par des hommes obstinés. Il laisse en bouche les notes de baies que lui confère la vendange rentrée par des chevaux qui longent des haies de ronces. Les saveurs discrètes d’ombre dues à sa vinification de nuit, ne peuvent masquer les longues heures d’ensoleillement par lesquelles les fruits ont emprisonné la lumière et les rires des vendangeurs.

Il accompagne parfaitement la soupe de coques de l’étang de Mateilles, les parillades de poissons relevées d’herbes de la garrigue et les tartines de brandade sur du pain aux céréales.

Cleavage! LOL!

 

I realised it was well over a year since I tried the self-adhesive bras I have that work much like a push-up bra or corset. And in that year, the hormones have quite obviously been working their magic! - what a wonderful discovery! :-)

 

My time has passed very oddly during my transition. It's like it's passing at two separate but concurrent speeds. I seem to be on never-ending waiting lists and day-to-day not much seems to be happening. But also, when I look back, I have transformed every aspect of my life, and it seems like only yesterday when I first stepped out in public back in 2016! I'm almost fully through my transition now, literally all i am waiting for is the lower surgery although I am considering breast enhancements too. Ideally I'm aiming for like this but without the self-adhesive bra.
