[This is one of a set of 8 photos} The John Waddey Carter House in Martinsville, Virginia, was built in 1896; the architect was George Franklin Barber, mail-order architect from Knoxville, Tennessee. This was a wedding present for Carter’s second wife, Kizziah Drewery. Locally the house is known as the “Gray Lady.” Carter was a lawyer and politician, one-time mayor of Martinsville.
A somewhat subdued Barber design, this is still a remarkable Queen Anne with architectural features galore. It’s a 2-story frame weatherboard structure with a dominating central gable, under which are found porches on both first and second floors. The roofline is complex with the front gable, steep-pitched cross gables, and a tower with onion dome. The roof is hipped, standing-seam metal-clad. A large dormer window is on the side with narrow double windows. Running bond brick forms the foundation.
The first level front façade has a wrap-around porch that contains the bulge of the tower. It has a frieze of beaded spindlework, turned posts and lace brackets, and a balustrade consisting of thick balusters but with panels at the corners. The porch gable has a board-and-batten decoration and a very basic bargeboard. The second-level porch has more involved ornamentation with a base of fish-scale shingles, a wide, subdued bargeboard, and stylized floral corner medallions. The central gable is decorated with fish-scale shingles and has two small 1/1 windows, the upper portions with a design of diagonal muntins.
The octagonal tower is more a part of the mass of the house rather than a taller, more prominent element. Fish-scale shingles form the base of the tower above the roofline; above this are small sunburst windows; and above the windows is an overhang with prominent brackets. Capping the tower is a small onion-dome with patterned metal shingles. A variety of windows exists throughout—tall but narrow 1/1 paned windows, single-paned, round, half-round, arched, and stained glass (I didn’t spot this). The entrance is simple with large sidelights and a decorative sunburst pattern below them.
Modifications have been made to the original house to accommodate additions of a bathroom and kitchen.
The house was listed November 3, 1988 on the National Register of Historic Places with ID #88002180. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources nomination file includes a very detailed account of the interior arrangement and decorative elements.

I had a fabulous night out with my dear friend Andrew,
We did Hitchcock's all-you-can-eat vegetarian restaurant to start the evening, before heading to Prince's Avenue where Hoi had a karaoke night on.
I sang 2 songs! To start with, The Beautiful South - Don't Marry Her, then my karaoke go-to song Mika - Grace Kelly.

Leeds Pride 2019 - words are wholly inadequate to describe what an amazing day this was. The outpouring of love and togetherness was jaw-dropping, the crowds along the streets were even bigger than last year! My favourite day of the year, as has been the case for the last 3 years since my first one.
It makes me fill up just going back through all these memories.

Disclaimer, my next comment may make some of you scratch your head. So for the last month, i've been rejoicing in my need for glasses and my new pair. I've wanted cute glasses for years, but did not need them (one of my kids even got me a cheap pair with plain glass, as a joke). 3 years after being told I had AWESOME vision, I went and was told I needed 'readers' (which I was gleefully suspecting for the last 6 months when i'd move things further away to be able to read them). SO...first of all, I actually love the fact that I can read without having to get into a certain position, but right now my really cute glasses are my favorite thing.

I forgot to put this one up the other night - another one of my belly-busting steak pie and skin-on double cooked chips, with home made gravy too!
Two days worth of steak pie there, for two people, and it was still a feast!

This manuscript is one of the three known fifteenth-century copies of a rare vernacular cosmography composed in verse under the title "Image du Monde" (The Mirror of the World) in Lorraine dialect in 1245-46. The manuscript provides descriptions of the seven liberal arts along with astronomical theories especially about the earth, the creatures that inhabit it, and its movements within the universe. Each one of the liberal arts is illustrated with a small miniature in grisaille, and extraordinary geometric astronomical diagrams recur throughout the book. The importance of W.199 is both textual and pictorial. Illuminated by followers of Willem Vrelant, active in Bruges 1454-1481, the manuscript reveals affinity of format and content with a 1464 copy of the Mirror of the World made in Bruges (London, British Library, Royal 19 A.IX).

The sun was shining today, :) :) so, inbetween mowing the lawn I decided to see what had emerged in the garden with my macro lens. A bee was struggling through the grass, tiny flowers have emerged and I felt intrigued to explore. Has anyone seen the film 'Honey I shrunk the Kids'?
I'm patiently waiting for our lavender to flower so that the bees return and I'm also keeping a close eye on the bug box I put up in the garden. What a life eh?!

Saturday night we went to a lovely Indie night I've been going to on Prince's Avenue called Beat The Clock. Some great tunes all played from vinyl - less mainstream than many nights, some more obscure tracks mixed in with well known ones.
We started the evening with food at Crafted, then went on to 80 Days Bierhaus, then Hoi and finallu upstairs at Hoi to Beat The Clock. A great night!

We went back to the Altisidora for food again New Year's Day and wow, what a meal it was. And I even managed to make room for indulgent pudding - brownie with chocolate ice cream and a chocolate dome, with hot fudge sauce. Wow!
We certainly ate well over the Christmas holidays!

Although John Edwin Johnson died before I was born, I am aware that he was not a jeweller or clock maker, but was in fact a wheelwright /coach builder, and had a business in Fylde St, Preston.
John Edwin Johnson’s father was a John Thomas Johnson who was born in Carlisle in 1847 and became an auctioneer/dealer. John Thomas Johnson’s father was also John Johnson who was born in Dublin in 1825. At first he was also an auctioneer/dealer, but later established the prominent jewellers and clock maker business at 10-11 Orchard St, Preston.
In the mid 1870s his son John Thomas Johnson also set up a similar business in Orchard St, and for a while the Johnson’s occupied a number of premises in Orchard St.
I am continuing to try to research into these businesses. John Johnson senior was still at 10-11 Orchard Street as late as the 1881 census, but by this time there was no trace of his son John Thomas Johnson.

again the "outside my window" activity began at dusk .... grrr
two hares appeared but only one attended to her/his toilette which consisted of toe nibbling, whisker combing etc. The other seemed more interested in eating - no comment!

A nice day - a visit to my Brother's which gave me the always-welcome opportunity to catch up with his doggie Max again (he is so cute!) followed by good food in the shape of home-made chilli con carne. :-)

In the 1970's a new family moved into what they believed to be the perfect home. Immediately the strange happenings began. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fletcher and their four children moved into this 100 year old house that at one time had been a roadside inn. In the home there was a supernatural terror that had the family scared for their lives. They turned to exorcism and Fr. Alphonsus Trabold for help. He believed that the Fletcher home was possessed by a supernatural entity.
Mrs. Fletcher and the children first noticed a mysterious chanting sound when hiking in the hills near their home, which disappeared 3 weeks later. The phone would ring with no one on the other line, the family heard pounding noises, and money and other things would be displaced or completely disappear. Lights went on and off by themselves, the kitchen stove would turn on and off while cooking dinner, windows opened mysteriously and water faucets would turn on and off by themselves. One of the children heard dragging noises in the attic, only to have Mr. Fletcher check it out and find the chimney dismantled.
The family also witnessed things moving by themselves. The Fletchers, along with their friends, also began seeing apparitions, mostly of women dressed in long gowns, both inside and outside the house. Once the family saw several faces looking at them through the window, and when they went outside to check it out, the same faces were looking back at them from inside while the lights flickered on and off. They also witnessed other apparitions of strange animal-like creatures that were not of a known species. According to Fr. Alphonsus, apparitions can be caused by hallucinations or by a psychic force. "If the person is of a stable mind and the apparition is witnessed by others, you can eliminate the possibility of hallucinations," he said.
As the strange happenings progressed, the apparitions began leaving physical evidence behind. There would be indentations on chairs and beds when no one had sat on them, and the animal-like apparition jumped into the daughter's lap. Two family friends caught an apparition, that was in the process of disappearing, walking outside the house on film. Fr. Trabold and other priests thought it looked like the figure of a tormented American Indian.
After that, the haunting grew violent and the family began fearing for their lives. There was a large family photograph hanging in a room, and once the family found a letter opener suspended over the picture, pointing at one of the girls. It fell to the ground as the family tried to approach it. Another time, a lamp flew across the room at another one of the girls. The Fletchers cleaned up the glass and locked the door to the room, and when they returned sometime later, they found the ace of spades lying in the middle of the floor. Two of the children woke up one morning with strange burn marks all over their bodies.
A few days later, the grandmother heard the Fletchers' son Randy's car in the driveway. She looked out the window and saw Randy and a blonde haired woman drive up to the house and then drive away. Later on that day, the grandmother found out that Randy's car had been in the garage all day and was not in operable condition. A couple days after that, Randy was involved in a near fatal car accident when apparently his car went out of control and hit a tree. While he was semi-conscious in the hospital, he kept asking about the blonde woman, but she was never found. However, there was evidence of a passenger because the dashboard contained the indentation of a human head. A mechanic could not explain the nature of the car's malfunction. Randy has complete amnesia about the accident.
Fr. Trabold performed an exorcism on the house, with family members, researchers, and a film crew present. During the filming of the exorcism, the lights kept flickering. The house was calm for a few weeks after, but after the effects of prayer wore off, the strange occurrences began happening again, and the family eventually moved out.

Sunday night we went to see our lovely and so talented friends Smooth Operator playing in Hedon.
We went for delicious food at the Camerton pub beforehand and even managed dessert before heading to see the gig.
Helen (the singer in Smooth Operator) even borrowed my Orinoco womble to wear while she was singing Wombling Merry Christmas, ha ha!

Gemma and I both have our birthdays within a few days of each other so we decided to go back to Lincoln for another weekend to celebrate it.
Our last night in Lincoln was really Gemma's birthday night because we were going back home on her birthday the next day. We found a new place with a light=up dance floor - Fever Boutique.
Good tunes and a great night although we didn't meet many people that night. Very enjoyable nonetheless and there's even video evidence of me dancing, ha ha!

Recently the Gm script 'Flickr Follow Comments' seems to be crippled by some API changes. Anybody else noticed this? Or is it just a hick up?
