A bottle of Barley Brew from Gourmetbryggeriet in Roskilde, Denmark.

Gourmetbryggeriet Barley Brew is a 10.5% abv barley wine, this particular bottle had been in my cellar for 7-8 years and had already expired by four years (best before 3 May 2010) when I opened it, but that is usually no problem for a barley wine. And it turned it wasn't.

The beer poured a dark reddish brown color with a beige head. It smelled of dried fruits with an oxidized malty sweetness underneath. Mouthfeel was full bodied with an oily texture. The taste started out with a good malty sweetness, slightly grainy. As it warmed, notes of ripe and dried fruits turned up. It finished with a mild bitterness and a lingering sweet aftertaste. Pretty tasty. Not bad for an expired beer.

Do you like bikes?

If so, you might want to check out

The Prudent Cyclist.

Something a little different. The Hoyne Brewing Company of Victoria/BC have eight types of beer at the moment. Some of them have existed for a while and some are new and possibly transitory. To celebrate, I bought one of each while they last. They are, upper row L to R: Alpha Acid (IPA); Queen's Knight (dunkelweizen); Hoyne Pilsner; Dark Matter (dark lager?). lower row L to R: Vienna (amber lager); Entre Nous (Belgian cherry witbier); Summer Haze (honey wheat beer); Down Easy (pale ale).

Spent some time over the holiday weekend brewing

This is a Gallon Kit I bought from Northern Brewer this past summer.

Thought it was time to brew. Bourbon Barrel Porter

It got great reviews. So I can’t wait to taste it.

Bad thing about gallon kits is it’s only a gallon if it’s good.

I’ll know in a few weeks. Should be ready to drink around Dec 18.

"The PILSENER BREWING CO., once located at the southwest corner of Clark Ave. and W. 65th St., was established by Bohemian brewer Wenzel Medlin (1849-1912) in 1892 and was incorporated the following year. The corner site of the Pilsener Brewing Co. was once known as Pilsener Square. The name Pilsener comes from the Czech city of Pilsen, where the light Bohemian lager beer was first made. In 1917 Pilsener produced 4 different brews: P.O.C. (which stood for "Pilsner of Cleveland"), Gold Top, Extra Pilsener Beer, and Pilsener Dark Lager; consumers received coupons for the return of empty bottles and exchanged them for premiums in a Pilsener catalog. Brewery operations were interrupted by PROHIBITION AMENDMENT, but bottling resumed on 2 May 1933. The Cleveland-based City Ice & Fuel Co. took control of Pilsener in 1935. City Ice & Fuel later diversified its line to include cold storage, dairy products, and ice appliances in addition to brewing, and in 1949 it became the City Prods. Corp. In 1960 Pilsener employed 300 and had an annual capacity of 375,000 barrels. In Jan. 1963 the Duquesne Brewing Co. bought the brewery and the P.O.C. label, and all brewery operations ceased. P.O.C., which now stood for "Pleasure on Call," was brewed by Duquesne in Pittsburgh. Ironically, when Duquesne went out of business 10 years later and sold its brand names to C. Schmidt & Sons, P.O.C. was again made in Cleveland, until Schmidt closed its Cleveland operation, the city's last brewery, in 1984."

The building now houses offices and storage spaces.

Suspect if I hadn't left the computer logged on and the bears unsupervised this might not have happened. they found some of Momma B's pictures and thought they might get involved in some of the festivities. My wife and I were at a Christmas Party for the car club that I belong to. This mess awaited us!!! Beauregard, seen sitting on the vacuum cleaner and straddling the train transformer(for those very young, it doesn't turn into anything, it supplies the AC power to make the train run)!!! Appears that Beaugard in his steelers uniform had given preference to the beer train. the picture may be a bit blurred at all sizes as I think the bear photographer may have been a participant also. At least the guilty parties are present. Leaning against the yellow canister are flip(named after me) and zelda who snores, they are a bit of an item. Singer reindeer, leaning against the bucket (he sings grandma got run over by a reindeer), nurse bear, given to my aunt by me when her variation of Lou Gehrigs disease became acute and she began to loose the movement in her arms and legs and her blood problem made the white cell counts to high and she would have to take chemo therapy. I am told that she took the bear to every therapy after she received it. I received it back after she passed away. Racing bear in his drivers suit sits beside her under the tree. For those sharp eyed individuals you will note they have broken into my stash of Olde Frothingslosh(google it, and rege kordic) Yes i remember when he was on KDKA in pittsburgh. this was a special Christmas beer brewed by the pittsburgh brewing company around the holidays to spread christmas cheer. Ba humbug my lush bears drank it all. For those sharpeyed Fayette County and Southwestern Pa folks. You will note that the beer train contains a Rolling Rock, Olde Frothingslosh, and Iron City and a Youghiogheny Beer Tank Cars, suprised they didn't get into that also. For those who don't know the motto of olde frothingslosh is:'the pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom!'

"Sometimes I wish that I was the weather, you'd bring me up in conversation forever. And when it rained, I'd be the talk of the day."

John Mayer

The two photos above were taken within just a few hours apart. I decided to post them together as I felt the photos couldn't stand on their own merit (just a sunset and a lightning photo). But when shown together, it seems it makes an awful lot of sense! You can see the power of nature and what it is capable of in minutes or hours.

I was biking at the beach and taking a few sunset shots, but after the sun was gone and I headed home it started raining and I got stuck in this food village to shelter from the heavy rain. Since, I was not doing anything just standing there with a bunch of people who were also stranded; I got my tripod, set the camera on long exposure, cranked up the intervalometer and hoped to get a good shot of the lightning,

Photo of the sunset was taken with a K-30 and an M 50 f1.7 lens. While the photo of the lightning was taken with a K-30 and a Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 lens.

See it Large to appreciate the details.
