Fatehpur Sikri, the town was otiginally named Sikri after the village, where it was founded but its twin city Fatehpur (Victory Town) was erected to celebrate Akbar's conquest of Gujarat in June 1573.
Located at a distance of around 26 miles west of the city of Agra, was one of the most prominent centers of the Mughal reign, Fatehpur Sikri, A popular legend is attached to the city's conception. According to it, Emperor Akbar was without a male heir, and was granted one by the blessings of the Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti. In honor of the saint, Akbar named the prince Salim.
Once the political capital of the Mughal dynasty during the rule of Emperor Akbar and a flourishing city till the year 1585, when Akbar left Sikri and shifted to Lahore to escape the water scarcity in Fatehpur. The abandoned city then slowly started to see the signs of negligence and never regained its lost glory again.
