Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes or fynbos. The family is Proteaceae. In local tradition, the protea flower represents change and hope. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape flora are thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape, where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in protea cultivation are birds, insects, and wind. Some Protea species exhibit both self-pollination and cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is preferred, though, as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Proteas usually flower during spring. The general structure of their flower heads consists of a mass of flowers on a woody receptacle. The ovary is protected by the receptacle, thus is not seen when looking at the flower, but the anthers are present at the top of the flower, which can then easily transfer the pollen to the vectors. 11113

The Macro Mondays theme for today, 9/6, is candy. This is a jolly rancher sour gummy. It’s in pretty close- since the gummy is about an inch long; i used a clip-on macro lens. Am liking this because the sugar crystals show up and also form the bokeh.....

But i also like the experiment fail, next in the photostream. i thought it would be cool to "tie-dye" a piece of cotton candy, using food coloring-- but dissolved it right quick ~grin~... who knows --when i wake up in the morning, i may decide to use the experiment one ~~giggling~~

Because it is a difficult time. I wish everyone stay healthy.

Both of these duckies were gifts from my SIL who knows how much I love macros and duckies— perfect, right? The tiny ducky fits on a dime— there’s a size verification shot and a set-up shot for this posting in my photostream.

This is the most magical photo I brought back from my Madeira trip. A little treasure for me, because being able to capture such a fleeting moment is something very special.

Originally we had planned something completely different for this day. And we were on the mountains on the opposite side. As you can already guess from here, the visibility was rather low there (it was basically close to zero). However, since we had once worked our way up what felt like 10,000 switchbacks on a very narrow and steep road (half of them in the fog and rain), we looked for an alternative nearby. This was then the valley of the nuns, a beautiful place in the middle of the mountains,

Opposite the small church, which can be seen at the front edge of the village, we had a coffee and the owner encouraged us to drive up here.

Since it was still raining on the other side of the valley, but the sun was just breaking through the cloud cover here, this fantastic rainbow suddenly appeared while we were still hiking.

You can probably imagine the rush that broke out for me to get the camera out of my backpack in time. This is one of two photos I was able to take, after which the rainbow was gone.

We all have moments where life seems too hard. I've had plenty of my own. I love this song because it represents being able to lean on someone share your pain and know that it's okay and that things will be okay, even if it's not right now. If you are struggling reach out, even when it seems like no one cares, I promise someone does. XOXO

So hey, if you feel like coming down

If you feel like coming around

Just call my name out loud, na, na, na

Hey, if you feel like coming down

If you feel like coming around

Just call my name out loud, na, na, na, yeah

Under your scars I pray

You're like a shooting star in the rain

You're everything that feels like home to me, yeah

Under your scars, I could live inside you time after time

If you'd only let me live inside of mine

Live inside of mine

Because this statue is at ground level it was often getting damaged so they put up a road sign to make people aware of it.

Captured this Great Grey owl not far from my gate on my way to go kayaking at sunrise (I recognized the owl from my winter shoot) It isn't camera shy at all but it doesn't like trucks so I get out and walk up. I'm glad I took images of all angles because I am just as crazy about a good background as I am of the subject. Not often I get both.

Finished my assignments just in the nick of time :)

However, just 2 nights before it was due, I nearly gave myself a heart-attack because my computer shutdown unexpectedly and auto-safe Word did not actually "safe." I was 75% into finishing but luckily it was recovered in the history/documents tab :D

Happy fence friday and have a great weekend :)

This is just because every Flickr feed needs a photo of a crocodile or alligator — *not* the footwear my son insists on wearing with socks, by the way. He tells me Crocs with socks is a thing. No offense if that’s your style where you live! 😉

I didn’t have a recent crocodile photo, so here’s Alfred the alligator. If I were his mummy crocodile, I’d definitely have named him Alfred. He’s got a bit of a thing for swimming in the rain, clearly. I swear I heard him singing:

I'm swimmin' in the rain,

Just swimmin' in the rain,

What a glorious feeling,

And I'm hungry again.

I'm laughing at clouds,

So dark, up above,

I could swallow that photographer whole,

If someone would just give him a shove.

No fun facts tonight because there is sooo much about these fantastic creatures I'd lose you! Suffice to say both crocodiles and alligators are fascinating survivors from the dinosaur era. After millions of years of evolution, they’ve become ferocious, expert hunters, inspiring equal parts respect and fear. We only have 1-2 fatalities a year from "salties" (saltwater crocodiles) over here. Maybe it's their revenge on people wearing that ridiculous footwear!

Happy weekend, everyone! :)

because of summer engineering works between Rygge and Moss on the Østfold Line in Norway, freight trains to and from Halden and Sarpsborg had to be rerouted via Sweden (charlottenberg - Kil - Brålanda - Kornsjø). Amongst the trains rerouted are the wood train Hønefoss - Halden of Grenland Rail. El.15./161.106 with empty wood train Halden - Hønefoss close to the Norwegian/Swedish border at Kornsjø.

Because the city is built on rock, they were unable to build a subway system. Instead, they created this magnificent cable car system that unites the entire city that's both fast and efficient.

"But is that true? Because a tree in spring buds and comes greenly into leaf, are those leaves therefore the tree? If the newborn twigs and their leaves were all that existed, they would form a vague halo of green suspended in mid-air, but surely that is not the tree. The leaves, by themselves, are no more than trivial fluttering decoration. It is the trunk and limbs that give the tree its grandeur and the leaves themselves their meaning. There is not a discovery in science, however revolutionary, however sparkling with insight, that does not arise out of what went before. 'If I have seen further than other men,' said Isaac Newton, 'it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants." — Adding a Dimension: Seventeen Essays on the History of Science, by Isaac Asimov.

happy may day

Bramham Biggin is situated on Bramham Park and is Grade II* Listed The building dates in part from the 17th century and is constructed of local magnesian limestone with a stone slate roof, on the site of a medieval Nostell Priory monks' cell.

It was a college from 1842 to 1907 but closed because of a typhoid epidemic, the headmaster is buried in Bramham churchyard. Afterwards it became a private residence again.

Bramham Biggin is now vacant and has been for some time, so the three-storey house in the Bramham Park Estate is in a state of disrepair and English Heritage have now identified it as at risk.

More information and the history of the name Biggin can be seen at www.leodis.net/ViewImage/ByIndicator/2004118_63416690
