A magical melee of flight shapes and winter sunshine - a most enjoyable combination!
Best viewed on black or in a larger size.
Because of construction on Washington, they moved the parade to Monroe Street, which provided us some pretty good views from my office.

taken from the back of the subway as we were leaving the station... usually there's a TTC employee blocking the view, but, because COVID, there hasn't been of late...
.......because of the shape of the roof. Our former combination sauna and guest house reflected in the lake.

The city of Belgrade exists where it does because of the nature around it. It's the confluence of the Balkan Peninsula and the Pannonian Plain. It's also the confluence of the Sava River with one of the longest rivers in Europe -- the Danube. Those factors have led humans to inhabit this patch of land for over 7,000 years. It has also led to this patch of land changing ownership...a lot.
A very brief history of the residents (not the fortress): Thracian and Dacian tribes lived around here. The first mention of a city on this spot was by a Celtic tribe (Scordisci) -- in the 3rd century BC. They called it Singidunum. The Romans took over. Kept the name. Considered this area a frontier outpost (towards central Europe). Europe's population grew. So did the Middle East's. They traded with each other, usually overrunning this area. From the Romans, it was subsequently peopled by (in no particular order): Hungarians, Austrians, Ausro-Hungarians, Ottomans, Slavs, Serbs, Yugoslavs (which just means "south Slav"), and I may have left out a group or two. Sorry about that.
The Romans were (most likely) the first to build a fortress on this exact plot of land and, for centuries, when talking about this town. Ah...Singidunum. The first mention of Belgrade (Beograd) was in 878 AD by the Bulgarians. That name means "white town" or "white fortress."
Focusing on the fort. Romans built here. It wasn't this large fortress that we see today. It was built, rebuilt, expanded, as is normal with the passage of time and population growth. I will mention gates only: some were built in the 15th century, some in the 17th, some in the 18th. I won't give more specifics than that; you can look for a more detailed and specific history if you'd like.
I'll focus instead on the Belgrade Fortress of the 21st century. It consists of four parts: the upper citadel/town, the lower town, Kalemegdan Park and Little Kalemegdan Park (where the Belgrade Zoo is).
The Upper Citadel has most of the towers/gates and great overlooks of the Sava River and Belgrade Waterfront development, in addition to New Belgrade (directly across the Sava), plus Great War Island and the Danube River. There are promenades along the wall which are great for panoramic views. You can also visit the slope and open grassy areas of the lower town down towards the riverside.
The lower town has been used as a spot for large concerts. Just since 2010, among the musical acts to perform here have been: Amy Whitehouse & Moby, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Green Day, Interpol, and others. Simply Red, too, performed at the fortress, but not in the lower town; they were on a basketball court.
Kalemegdan Park is the most popular park in the city for locals and tourists alike, thanks to shaded benches, winding walkways, statuary.
The last commentary about the fortress is just a list of some of the things you can find here (mostly in the upper town): memorial busts, archaeological dig sites, monuments, restaurants, a tomb, churches, museums, a Roman Well (built by Austrians in the 18th century), galleries, fountains, and drinking fountains.
This is the most popular attraction to visit in Belgrade, and with good reason. (It's the main thing I was looking forward to in Belgrade and, though I'd hoped for better weather, it was still the highlight of the city.
Translates to pigs intestine noodles, just because it has the same look. This noodle comes in two options - the rolled one and the folded/flat ones. It is basically steamed sheets of rice flour which are either rolled like a little carpet or folded to 4 inch wide strips then cut to smaller pieces when served.
The important part of this dish is the sauce, which is a sweat black bean sauce similar to Hoi Sin sauce. It should not be too sweet or too salty. Normally you could choose some yong tau foo (vegetable/tofu stuffed with fish paste) to go with the noodles. Your choices are then splashed sparingly with some sesame oil and sauce poured over. I prefer chili on the side in case the chili is too hot or bitter.

And because the MBPs magsafe is incredibly fragile...
When i got my MBPs magsafe replacement, I decided I have to take good care of it. I am planning to get a cute purse for it but do I really need to? Instead I wrapped the magsafe with a small towel and secured it with a pony tail.
