Just because it's cloudy and wet doesn't mean you can't get the camera out. All from this morning with the sliding glass door partly open. Angier, North Carolina

We don’t get many Northern Pintails in Southern Florida, so I spent a lot of time with a pair that is here visiting. A very pretty duck that I’ve found very difficult to get in flight because they don’t fly often and it’s very difficult to tell when they are about to do so. They give a lot of false tells, the male looking around as if he’s getting takeoff clearance but then goes back to feeding. One tip is to pay more attention to the female. The drake will go where she goes. (Anas acuta) (Sony a1M2, 400mm lens, f/2.8, 1/3200 second, ISO 2500)
Sally and I were walking in our quiet neighborhood. I usually take the camera because I'm hopeful that we'll come across a neighbor cat. This guy stole my heart right away.

Because Canmore is situated in a mountain valley one side of town gets dark much earlier than the other side.
As I take a walk on the dark side, I see the sunny side still basking in the summer sun.
I often debate giving Bryton a makeover. It's been a couple years.

Valle de la Luna is a part of the Reserva Nacional los Flamencos and was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982 for its natural environment and strange lunar landscape, from which its name is derived.
The Atacama desert is also considered one of the driest places on earth, as some areas have not received a single drop of rain in hundreds of years, but last week. A prototype for a Mars rover was tested there by scientists because of the valley's dry and forbidding terrains.
Here's this week's "Steam Sunday" offering a day late....because well I was a little distracted yesterday!
This photo should need no introduction given the massive amount of coverage of this event not just in the railfan community but in mass media and by the general public writ large. This is truly, without hyperbole, the railfan event of a generation and perhaps THE event of our lifetime. Never in any of my wildest dreams would I have believed a Union Pacific Big Boy would be under steam traveling far off "home rails" touring the eastern half of the nation. But here we are....the biggest on the biggest.....the largest steam locomotive in the world ever designed and built by the hand of man steaming across the largest concrete railroad bridge on the planet. This view looks down from Spencer Hill Road as UP 4014 accompanied by diesels from UP and host road Norfolk Southern both numbered 1776 steams south 240 ft above the valley of Tunkhannock Creek at about MP 653.2 on modern day NS' Sunbury Sub mainline.
As a tribute the semiquicentennial the Union Pacifc 4014 embarked on a coast to coast tour that saw it steam from Cheyenne on March 29th and travel to California to visit Milepost 0 denoting the start of the Central Pacific Railroad in Sacramento. It returned to Cheyenne on April 24th for a month before starting east on this much anticipated and unprecedented journey on May 25th. 4014 will celebrate the 4th of July in Philadelphia before starting back west ultimately scheduled to return home on July 29th! The 1.2 million pound 4-8-8-4 rolled off the erecting floor of the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, NY in Dec. 1941 and went cold on July 21, 1959 before returning to steam and moving again under its own power on May 1, 2019. Check out UP's official steam site to learn much more: www.up.com/about-us/history/steam/big-boy-4014
This is one of those legendary places in railroading everyone should see at least once for themselves. It truly is breathtaking and hard to wrap your head around when you see it for the first time. I've photographed trains in many places where they are dwarfed by the environment. In all those other cases it is nature that humbles the train be it towering mountains, or mighty rivers, or the vastness of the desert southwest but not here. Here it is the work of man that dwarfs the train....even one this big.....in the form of Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct...the lagest concrete railroad bridge in the world.
Built by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad between 1912 and 1915 as part of the railroad's Nicholson Cutoff project which as a new 39.6 mile alignment between Clarks Summit, PA and Hallstead, PA that shortened the line by 3.6 miles but more importantly reduced the gradient and 2400 degrees of curvature for the massive amount of freight traffic (much of which was anthracite coal) flooding the line. The cutoff also included the construction of a 3600 ft tunnel and the shorter but no less impressive Martins Creek Viaduct in a similar concrete arch style. The DL&W was a pioneer in concrete construction using the material for depots and towers and had built two smaller but concrete arch bridges over Paulins Kill and the Delaware River five years earlier as part of its Lackawanna cut off project.

This route remained important and busy even after the Lackawanna's 1960 merger with the Erie. However after Erie-Lackawanna was folded into Conrail in 1976 the big blue government railroad had little use for the line and in 1980 sold it to the Delaware and Hudson between Binghamton and Scranton so they could replace and abandon their challenging Penn Division over Ararat Summit. The D&H continued to operate the line which during the Guilford years was a link in the 752 mile long Freight Main Line reaching from Mattawamkeag, Maine to Kase Tower in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Guilford spun the D&H off into bankruptcy in 1988 and Canadian Pacific purchased the road in 1991 continuing to send up to a dozen trains a day over this route. Finally in 2015 CP sold all of the former D&H south of Mohawk Yard in Schenectady, NY to Norfolk Southern which continues to operate it a decade later, though these days little more than one giant train in each direction normally travels via this now single tracked route.

I was late for sunset because of traffic, parked my car and immediately raced to get a glimpse of golden light before the sun disappeared behind the clouds.
I saw this stream and run uphill looking for a good spot, got my shoes wet and all..but it was too late, the sun had gone.
I set my tripod to at least take a picture of the water when, just as magic, one last ray of light peeked through the clouds, illuminating this specific part of the mountain.
It truly was an incredible moment.
When I invite Sparkles over for a drink or three, it kinda sorta always ends up something like this: a dance-off in the greenhouse with the greenhouse security camera catching the antics! This is really colorful, right?! And we’re looking very sunkissed here, but you know, it’s greenhouse lighting, extra fine tuned for uhm, pot plants. And yes, I have fluffy boots in every color including Georgia red!
I wanted to show Spark my prized cannabis plant, so after our fourth or fifth margarita, we danced through the doors to admire the blue-ribbon worthy greenery (okay, maybe not quite blue ribbon!) and I forgot to switch off the security cameras. But ... a win for us, a drunk selfie for the collection without even having to snap it ourselves. Plus, bonus points for Sparkle actually sparkling like a unicorn here as well! Love you, Sparkling girl, and cheers to another adventure with photographic evidence for the memory album. Yay! PS: your version is so ace!🍷🍷🍷
I hope everyone is having a fantastic fall ... I have been sporadic with my Flickering because, well, it's football season and as everyone knows, I'm obsessed. Go Dawgs! Sending tons of love! xo ❤️🏈
life goes on, somehow
I'm feeling the flood, the flood of a lot of work.
It feels like a thousand ants under my skin , the blood rushing, the heart running.
I should go out now for a minimum of one hour, a night walk. I should.
But maybe I only dress me for my ergometer...
A december like thia. No silent time.
But I try to walk as much as possible.
I prefer to start work a little later, because the end is alwasys open, every day.
Last night I had a good sleep.
But to do it again, I need to bring down my stress hormones.
Hahaha

Finding compositions in bright light and dark shadows is a challenge. In this cove along the Oregon coast i looked for the smaller things to photograph in order to eliminate the harsh contrast. This rock lurking along the shade with the bit of green moss seemed to be just right. I like long exposure on water because it displays things not usually seen by the eye. Below the surface lies a few rocks in the background and foreground. The bright highlights in the upper right are the result of light entering the cove through high walls of sandstone.

Pose by Exposeur - When the Right One Comes Along
I remember the moment I chose this look - not for the world, but for him… or perhaps for the possibility of him. The kind of man who doesn’t just notice - he sees. And when that moment comes, I never leave anything to chance.
This is where the Brenda Dress by LF Design becomes my quiet advantage - my unspoken introduction.
There’s something undeniably magnetic about its silhouette. The deep plunging neckline dares without apology, sculpting a line that feels both confident and irresistibly feminine. The tailored waist - cinched with that perfectly balanced belt - draws everything inward, creating a soft hourglass that moves as I move. And those elongated sleeves, kissed with sheer striping, add just enough intrigue… a play between concealment and revelation.
The cut is deliberate - a harmony of structure and fluidity. The hemline floats just high enough to tease, while the vertical striping elongates my form, making every step feel like a statement rather than a movement. It’s not just a dress - it’s posture, presence, intention.
And then there’s the HUD - my personal palette of moods. 🎨 With a full spectrum of colorways and tint capabilities, I don’t just wear the Brenda Dress… I curate it. Soft neutrals for quiet afternoons, bold contrasts for nights when I want to be remembered. The textures respond beautifully under light, enhancing every contour with subtle realism and depth. It gives me control - and that control is power.
To complete the look, I slipped into the Zena Boots. They don’t whisper - they declare. The thigh-high rise wraps my legs in a sleek, second-skin finish, grounding the softness of the dress with a bold, unapologetic edge. The stiletto heel lifts not just my height, but my confidence… changing the rhythm of how I walk, how I pause, how I turn.
Their HUD is just as expressive - offering multiple color options from classic black to daring reds, allowing me to shift the entire mood of the ensemble with a single click. Whether I want mystery or fire… they deliver.
Together, this look becomes something more than fashion. It becomes a feeling. The kind you wear when you’re not searching anymore - but you’re ready to be found. Because when the right man enters your life… you don’t try to impress him - you simply arrive as your most unforgettable self. ✨
The Brenda Dress is compatible with Maitreya, Legacy, Reborn, Kupra, LaraX, Niramyth, and Waifu mesh bodies, ensuring a flawless, sculpted fit across today’s most sought-after silhouettes. The Zena Boots are compatible with Legacy, Maitreya, Reborn, Kupra, and LaraX mesh bodies, designed with precision shaping that hugs the leg beautifully for that seamless thigh-high finish.
These exquisite pieces are now available at the Swank Dreams in Pastels Event:

This was basically a house money shot. I had already accomplished the scenic "wow" shots of this train, as it trundled back to Trona I debated not even taking this picture. Nothing special... but the light was great so why not. Well, good thing I ignored the impulse to be a moron, because this exact shot is no longer possible. TRC 2007 and 2009 have been cut up this past week and will never again ply the desert. Acquired in 2002, Trona would end up with 3 former UP SD40-2's. The deck was stacked against them from the beginning. To start, they were already ratty looking and were replacing some gorgeous looking SD45-2's, painted in a resplendent red and silver scheme. Then of course, they weren't as neat as the former SP units on property still sporting their scarlett and grey. Third, a more common locomotive there was not. Union Pacific rostered 1,079 SD40-2's at one time, part of the staggering 4,029 produced by EMD between 1972 and 1989. At some point though, they transcended being mundane and entered the realm of cool again. In the age of GE dominance and Tier 4 nonsense, Trona's 7 EMD's became the rock against which progress gnashed its teeth. Watching these ugly beasts climb the grade, roaring through a hellish landscape on only two steel rails as they climb nearly vertical out of the basin.... I guess they aren't so mundane after all.

...what I call this Katydid because of it's pumpkin-orange colored eyes.
Good morning everyone and Happy Hug-a-Bug Tuesday. Featured today is a short series on the Common Meadow Katydid (Orchelimum vulgare). One of two common Katydids found here locally with the other being the Northern Bush Katydid, of which I'll post a series at a later date.
As for the Common Meadow Katydid, they're more apt to be heard than seen. Even though they are fairly common I rarely see one, especially out in the open, but I never fail to hear them with their constant singing in the fields when I'm out & about.
As for these photos, just three pics with the above being the only one of this particular individual. The two photos in the comment section are of a different Meadow Katydid, which was smaller than the one pictured above. It also had extremely long antennae, even for a Katydid, which you can clearly see in the second photo in the comment section...especially if viewed large.
Almost forgot, both Katydids pictured here are males and body length is about 1.75 inches (45mm) long when fully grown.
As always, don't forget to click on "view previous comments" if you don't see the two additional photos in the comment section. Even better, scroll to them by clicking on the arrow thingy to the right of the above pic. And if you want to any pic in the comment section large all you have to do is click on it where you'll also find the full text describing this species of Katydid.
Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you are having a truly nice week.

A shot planned months in advance took place on Day 2 while chasing UP 4014 on its eastward journey. Built in 1941, the 25-engine Big Boy fleet never operated east of the Mississippi during its regular revenue service. This 2026 trip is the locomotive’s inaugural journey across Ohio and into the Northeast.
What makes this shot special is fans gathered to witness the 1.2-million-pound goliath glide at track speed along the former Nickel Plate Road corridor. Because the Big Boy was never originally designed for this specific route, it was uniquely treated to clearances and bridge capacities during its run along the southern shore of Lake Erie.
Here we see one of many bridges UP 4014 crossed on its trek across the NKP, headed east in Vermilion, OH, as it crossed the Vermilion River.
