As I wheeled my bike into the office apartment to get showered and changed, I saw this posted in the elevator. Bicycles are now prohibited from the entrance and elevator. Whoops.

This was a first attempt at "photo elastisity." I don't have a full understanding how the color happens but it has to do with using a computer screen for a background, a polarizer on the camera and transparent plastic for subject matter.

Well, what a day this was.

I received a phone call from the Calibre safety superintendent about an hour and a half before taking these shots. I was asked if I would be happy to shoot the photos for the 365 days, no lost time injuries celebration on site, to which I told her that I would be happy to. I was then asked if I had my camera on site. Laughing I replied, when don’t I have my camera?

I locked the gate house and rushed back to camp to collect my camera. I returned a short time later and readied my camera with the appropriate lens and a fully charged battery, plus a spare, just in case it failed mid shoot.

I was picked up by the Paramedic and ESO as they passed through the gate to go to the celebration.

Now this was quite nerve wracking for me because I had not actually touched my camera for about three months, or maybe more. I was also going to be shooting in manual as the sun was going to be quite harsh at that time of the day and I needed to control the light and contrast from in camera with all intentions of being able to manipulate it in post once I returned to the gate house. Sure most people say get it right in camera and then you won’t need to use post, but if I can shoot and get it right in camera to be able to manipulate it to how it needs to look in post, then that is how I will do it.

Whilst the group of workers were gathering I took about 20 practice shots in manual mode in preparation for the real shots. By the time every one was in position I had my camera set up to the specifications that I needed and this made it easier to be able to direct them to what I was doing and how I wanted them to act.

One of the shots is a panorama and thankfully due to all my settings being configured prior to the group coming together I was able to direct them to hold the pose whilst I took a sequence of 4 photos and not to move during this time. It worked quite well apart from the fact that I kept my auto focus on and this gave the picture a bit of a stretched out effect once the shots were stitched together. But the boss was still happy with the result and that’s all that mattered to me.

After the group shoot it was time for the BHP operations manager to speak to the group. I was not aware that this was going to happen so I had to make a quick decision to join the group and listen to what he was saying or document the moment for future reference. I decided to document it, much to the delight of the people involved in the organising of the day, conveyed to me after handing over the pictures.

After that came the BBQ in the McConnell Dowell crib area. I decided to continue the documentation of the day throughout this time, whilst catching a quick bite to eat off the BBQ where I could.

All in all the people that asked me to take the photos were happy with the results and that is all I wanted to hear at the end of the day.

Well done to all involved over that full year in making the site a safe place to work.

I awake each day with a smile

And greet it with a laugh;

The world is a treasure to me

Because of you.

Every time I think of something sad,

I replace the thought- with you!

My mind is instantly changed

And my heart is filled with gladness.

Every breath I take is meant for you,

I live this life surrounded in joy

And I bathe in the promise of your love,

My soul belongs to you.

Each time I see something beautiful

I want to take it and bring it to you;

My life has so much meaning now

All because of you.

Last week I was all excited because I had ordered Kenko extension tubes for my Canon camera. It came last Friday but I was having high blood pressure issues and couldn't even open the package. Later in the weekend when I started feeling better I opened the box and to my horror they were tubes for Nikon! However, I noticed a white sticky label slapped on the side of the box that said Canon and my heart fluttered a bit. I took them out to try them on and sure enough, they would not fit. That took the wind out of my sails. Then I remembered that my daughter had given me a lens magnifier for either Christmas or birthday. So for the last 3 days I've been playing around with it again and I have to say I'm very pleased with it.

My husband bought and planted a japanese maple for my birthday this year. With the drought we've been experiencing it has looked pretty bad for most of the summer. Yesterday we both noticed two bright purplish colored leaves at the very bottom of the tree. I think she's going to make it! This is what I shot tonight with the Opteka 10x magnifier. As I write this rain is falling gloriously down on our parched earth and I feel so blessed at this moment.

Sorry I have been MIA. I will be catching up with everyone starting NOW!

"Historically, calligraphy has been influenced by tools, architecture, availability of vellum, and of course, the printing press. We’re seeing letters and words on just about everything today because they bring meaning to our lives. Words inspire, comfort, connect and clarify ~ they express who we are, how we feel, and what we’re thinking. When an artist merges color, texture, space, contrast, repetition, rhythm, and shapes with letters, their creations give a new dimension to the alphabet."

Experience at Sierra College

I’ve been a Sierra College student (2009-2010), and currently teach calligraphy and design at Community Education and OLLI.

Sierra College truly serves the community in education, enrichment and enjoyment! I’ve enjoyed it from all these perspectives, including educational seminars, community musical performances, bus trips to museums in San Francisco, and artists’ presentations.

We’re lucky to have this resource to provide inspiration for growth and renewal.

Ridley Gallery, Sierra College is pleased to present Cultivate, an online exhibition of 2020 Placer Artists Studios Tour participants for whom Sierra College has been a valuable component in education and enrichment.
