Thirteen is a culmination of work from the MFA in Visual Studies class of 2015’s past two years together. Although their mediums, aesthetics, and concepts may follow different lines of inquiry, what threads their individual practices together is the shared dialog and constant support that has thrived during their academic development. Thirteen showcases each artist’s work individually, but when taken as a whole, their collective influences, connections, and experiences highlight the creativity and inspiration amongst the group.
Exhibiting Artists: Maria Davidoff, Lucas Haley, Evan Isoline, Candace Jahn, Marisa Lee, Kelly McGovern, Jung Min, Bertrand Morin, Annie Oldenburg, Nick Patton, Katie Piatt, Veronica Reeves, and Micah Schmelzer.
PNCA MFA IN VISUAL STUDIES
Boris Groys in his essay “Education by Infection” examines contagion and illness as a metaphor that characterizes a productive condition for art education and practice today. Groys locates examples in the work and philosophy of Kazimir Malevich who portrayed the bombardment of influences and inputs directed at art students as a strain of bacilli, ever adapting and incorporating new forms by the host organism. Groys goes on to suggest the art academy once removed from the world, is now cast open to growing impressions and contradictions ¬¬– whether it be the art market, politics, ethical concerns or entertainment. Students who put themselves in this position are tasked without clear boundaries and often-indefinite solutions for their work. It is my hope that through risk and experimentation, we as students, educators and artists embrace such an uncomfortable and indeterminate space, where as Groys posits, we are both the infected and the infecting. This is both a place of vulnerability and influence. Through this lens the thirteen students in the graduating Visual Studies class of 2015 can leverage their time in art school and all the hard work it has taken, knowing that their efforts as creative artists will be that of adaptation and resilience.

I did two today, because I'm not sure this one makes much sense, but it's pretty funny. I tried it with Lego Luke Skywalker too, but he didn't show up very well.
Didn't know what to do, was bored.. So I did this..I don't know whatever this is..well.. :S

The opening reception for the 2022 student art exhibit was held at The Gallery of the Rhodes Center for the Arts on April 8, 2022. The exhibit features works by students in the NMH Visual Arts program, and will remain on exhibit until early May, 2022. Photography by Glenn Minshall.

VISUAL LIBRARIES - Leave your Mark.
A collaborative, visual project which encourages you to sign out a Visual Library Book and ‘Leave Your Mark’.
A Visual Library Book is whatever you want it to be, a sketchbook, a journal, a diary, a notepad.
You can ‘Leave Your Mark’ in whatever way you want, ranging from drawing, writing, sewing, adding photographs, markings, printing and sticking. How you make your marks is entirely up to you. All we ask is that you have fun with the different themes. Just borrow it on your library card with other books and materials. If you are not already a member, just ask the staff to help you.
45 Visual Library Books have been placed in Portsmouth Central Library and each has its own theme ranging from; Portsmouth, My City, When I Open My Eyes, Whilst I Was Waiting, Love, What’s in My Pocket and Memories. The intention is for you to feel free to explore the Visual Library Books and choose a theme that you like.

United Visual Artists (UVA) produce work at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, live performance, moving image and digital installation. UVA’s team members come from many disciplines. The cross pollination of diverse skills inspires new fields of exploration.
Volume consists of many columns of light, each equipped with a speaker. Together, the columns turn into an environment that looks a bit like a futuristic forest. The installation uses a camera system to track everyone that moves through it and converts these movements into a specific sound and light pattern. Everyone pulls his own trail through the installation and together the visitors create a totally unique audiovisual web.
Volume first appeared in the garden of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum in 2006 and has since then traveled as far as Hong Kong, Taiwan, St. Petersburg and Melbourne.
Biography:
Glenna Cole Allee is a visual artist and curator. She holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA from Reed College. Her work explores landscape as cultural iconography and addresses the shifting relationships between place, myth and memory; it has been exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
Originally from New York City, she has been an active participant and contributor to Bay Area local arts for a decade. She has worked as an arts educator teaching photography to youth in the Mission District and Bayview/Hunter's Point, to homeless and low-income residents of San Francisco, and currently as an independent curator. She is a co-founder of MicroClimate Collective, an artist created curatorial project that has produced ten thematic exhibitions since 2008.

I studied at city when I first interested became in photography and while beginning to teach photography in Bayview Hunter's Point, and again when making a portfolio for application to graduate school. City College made it possible.
