This painting replicates Delaroche's most famous work, a mural in oils and wax (1836-41) in the auditorium of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France's most prestigious art school. Delaroche's pupil, Charles Béranger, is thought to have begun this replica in 1841, but the master completed it following his pupil's death in 1853. It provided a basis for L.-P. Henriquel-Dupont's engraving reproducing the composition.
Represented are great artists of the past who appear to preside over the awards ceremonies held in the auditorium. Enthroned in the center are the three masters of antiquity-Ictinus the architect, Apelles the painter, and Phidias the sculptor-flanked by personifications of Greek and Gothic art (on the left) and Roman and Renaissance art (on the right). Below, the semi-nude figure of Fame leans forward to distribute laurel wreaths to the recipients of the coveted Grand Prix de Rome, who were entitled to spend 4 to 5 years studying in Rome at the expense of the State.
Those European artists from the 13th through the 17th centuries whom Delaroche ranked as the most important are included in his great assembly. To the left are 14 sculptors and a gathering of painters known as colorists and naturalists and, to the right, 13 architects, 2 engravers, and 19 painters distinguished for their drawing. Although many of their names are familiar today, among them Titian, Rembrandt, and Rubens on the left, and Raphael, Michelangelo, and Poussin on the right, others are less so. Notably absent are Botticelli, El Greco, and Vermeer, whose paintings were not rediscovered until later in the century.
According to the accounts of the dealer Adolphe Goupil the exceptionally elaborate frame cost 5,000 French francs, or $1,000, a remarkable sum in 1853.

Very little is known about Francesco Bertos, a highly original artist who created a considerable number of complicated pyramidal groups in a very distinctive, ingenious style that mirrors the lightness and airiness of contemporary rococo painting in France. Each of the pieces has a primary view or "front" while offering interconnected details that unfold as one moves around the piece.
These four groups (Walters 54.657, 54.658, 54.659, and 54.660) are symbolic representations (allegories) of the four parts of which the world was then thought to consist. The concept of "continents" would come later and the North and South America would be considered separately . All have their names engraved. In the allegory of America, the fierce and primitive nature of the New World is represented by the semi-nude female Native American warrior wearing feathers, who has shot an opponent with an arrow. She supports a man who stands on an alligator that looks strangely like a lizard. The gruesome detail of the little boy lifting a decapitated head on a spear refers to European assumptions about the practice of cannibalism in America.

This earring was made to hang on sculptures of deities worshipped in Nepalese temples. Nepalese craftsmen excelled at the detailed encrustation of jewels to depict complex figural imagery. They shaped gold wires into a framework, then inserted polished stones into the spaces, held in place with an adhesive. Four-armed Vishnu is made of sapphires; his mount the man-eagle appears to be made of carnelian and spinel with wings of turquoise.

In the 1800s, native peoples began to use European fabrics to fashion fine formal garments; they favored sturdy cloth, such as velvet and wool broadcloth, which provided support for heavy decorative beadwork that was added by hand. Often the fabric was a dark color, providing dramatic contrast for the multicolored beads. Rather than encrusting the entire garment, beadwork was confined to cuffs, “epaulettes,” bib-like plackets and yokes, rectangular panels sewn to leggings, shirts, and dresses, and the like.

Khonsu could be represented either as a youth or a falcon-headed male with a moon-disk and crescent on his head, as here. He is mentioned as a moon god in the pyramid texts as early as the 3rd millennium BCE. As the son of Amun and Mut he was worshipped in Karnak where he had his own temple from the Middle Kingdom onwards.
