Photos taken on January 11,2009 of Shopping Center located in the Fairfax District at 3rd and Fairfax. It is located across from Farmer's Market and the new shopping complex, The Grove. The Kmart is a former Britts Department Store owned by JJ Newberry Co. Across the street is also a former Market Basket that closed many years ago. It was converted to a Plums Clothing Store, which was taken over by Ross Dress for Less Stores (Yes this is the famous store that blew up due to gases from underneath the store). To the left of Kmart is the Ross. To the right of Kmart are a row of shops. Finally at the far right are two major stores. At the end of the row of stores is a former Sav-on Drug Store that converted to CVS when CVS took over all of Albertsons Freestanding Drug Stores/Pharmacies. This occurred around 2006. To the left of CVS is Whole Food. This location of a supermarket has a long history. When I was a child, this was originally a SAFEWAY SUPERMARKET. The V light fixtures in the parking lot are originals and were also located at the former SAFEWAY at the corner of La Brea and Rodeo. Those light fixtures have been replaced. In the late 60's to early 70's, Ralphs Supermarkets took over this site. This complex is always packed with shoppers, including the stores as they have a problem with people parking in the lot to go to Farmer's Market and the Grove. When Ralphs had to divest of several stores for its merger with the Yucaipa Company, owner of Boys, Alpha Bets, Viva Markets and Food 4 Less, Yucaipa sold this location to Lucky Supermarkets. It remained a Lucky for a few years, until Albertsons took over Lucky in 1999. Albertsons Supermarkets ran this store for a few more years, until it closed this location. Whole Food Supermarkets quickly snapped up the location and it was been operating as a Whole Foods Supermarket for 5 or 6 years. This summer, Whole Foods expanded this location taking over several shops on its left. This Whole Foods is always packed every time I pass by it.
This shopping complex has a couple of guards, who will have your car towed it you leave the shopping center.

A number of Easter German products survived the fall of the wall in 1989 and can still be bought today. Granted, some of the products have been updated and lost their GDR look while others pretty much stayed the same or are still from GDR times. It's fun to reminiscene and see what you could and can still buy.

Bye Bye Henry The Hatter in downtown Detroit. In the same location for the past 65 years, but in business since 1893. They have been forced out by the landlord, who cancelled their lease. They hope to relocate somewhere in downtown, although they do still have a Southfield, Michigan location.

Service Merchandise was originally founded in 1934 by Harry and Mary Zimmerman as a five-and-dime store in the town of Pulaski, Tennessee, near Nashville. The first of what evolved into a huge chain of catalog showroom opened in 1960 on Broadway St. in downtown Nashville, Tennessee
The company thrived in the 1980s and 1990s, but it eventually lost market share in its housewares and electronics sectors to giant discounters such as Wal-Mart and Bed, Bath & Beyond, and later Best Buy and Circuit City. Although Service Merchandise was early to embrace the Internet in the 1990s, generating tens of millions of dollars in sales, it was not enough to offset the damage being done by the mega-chain stores springing up nationwide
I worked in the warehouse at this store in 1987.
Photos taken on January 4, 2008 of the site of former Fedco Department Store. The site included a full service department store, including variety, fine jewelry, clothes, liquor, Televisions, stereos, cameras, electronics, appliances, garden section, furniture, groceries with a full service meat counter, bakery, full service deli, snack bar, as well as a small electronic fix it shop that worked on shavers, etc.
The store was always packed on the inside as well as in the parking lot. It was a membership store that mainly took government employees or anyone affiliated with the government.
In late 1998, early 1999 Fedco liquidated its assets and sold their properties to Target. Target took over many of their former sites, demolishing the old Fedco Stores and replacing them with similar structures. This was one of the first stores demolished and rebuilt by Target. Open around 2000.
Located at the corner of Rodeo Road and La Cienega.
From January 2008 to July 2008 the store has undergone a renovation, including a new entrance.
Also located on this Former Fedco Department Store Site was an Auto Center/Tire Center as well as a Fedco Gas Station.
Currently on the site is a Target Department Store, McDonald's Restaurant as well as the Arco Gas Station, which remained after the Fedco building was demolished. The Target building is similar in shape to the former Fedco. The Auto Center was demolished by Target as well as there was also a parking structure next to the Fedco building that was demolished for the new Target.

Furniture store Porters was a fixture in downtown Racine for 152 years, opening in 1857 and shutting its doors in 2009. I had a family connection to the place as my Aunt Sophie used to work here and I remember shopping in Racine with her when I was a kiddie.

Nicolson Store, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. So far, this winter tour of Williamsburg has proceeded backward in time, from dusk to earlier in the afternoon, along Francis Street, over to the Capitol, on to Waller Street, and then down Nicholson (different spelling from store name) Street to the Hay lodging house on Market Square. It now jumps to Duke of Gloucester Street and the Nicolson Store near the Capitol, and will then go west along that main street of Colonial Williamsburg.
Nicolson Store, a general store a few buildings west of the Capitol, is one of the 88 original buildings left from two centuries and more ago; the John Crump house, visible beyond the store, is a reconstructed residence. [Official Guide to Colonial Williamsburg, 3rd edition (Williamsburg: Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, 2007), pp. 62-63.] For some reason, I find the Nicolson Store very appealing, particularly in the fall, but really at any time of year. The colors are part of the appeal, but the proportions are pleasing, as well.

We the new Apple Store in Amsterdam.
My son made an appointment with his Apple Store app for some information while we were in the store. Within seconds we got the information what the name was of the employee who would help us and where we could find him.
The recently opened Apple Store in Amsterdam is the biggest in the world and this Apple Store also features an eye-catching glass staircase.
Not size-wise but it is considered the biggest when it comes to the number of products on display. It also has the longest Genius bar in the world, if that’s not enough it’s also the very first Apple retail store in the Benelux (Belgium-Netherlands-Luxembourg).
At the Genius Bar, visitors can talk with an Apple employee when they have questions or need hands-on technical support for their Mac, iPad, iPod, Apple TV, or iPhone. With the Apple Store app you can Make Genius Bar and One to One reservations and sign up for workshops and events.

Photograph taken on April 4, 2009, Saturday morning of former Milliron’s Department Store that opened approximately in 1949. A few years later The Broadway Department Store chain took over this site and it was a Broadway Department Store until the early 1990s. The Broadway disposed of this location. Mervyns took over the site, gutted the interior, remodeled the interior, removed the rooftop parking, as well as an escalator tower and stairs that led to the roof. Located in Westchester California on Sepulveda and LaTijera. Los Angeles California. In 2008, Mervyns announced that they were closing down all of their stores. This former Mervyns Department Store closed down in early January 2009. Originally, when this was a Broadway, you could drive up to the roof for parking via a ramp. The ramp has been sealed off after Mervyns took over the buliding.
Kohl's Department Stores has taken over the site and is currently renovating the interior of the building. The entire bulding has been gutted. The Mervyns' name was removed the outside of the bulding in the last couple of weeks. The giant blank sign holder that can been seen in this photo wwas originally used when this store operated as The Broadway as well as by Mervyns.
Located across the street from the former Mervyns is another Shopping Center. In this center is a Longs Drugs and a Ralphs Supermarket. In 2008 CVS Pharmacy Stores puchased the Longs Drug Store Chain. In early April 2009, the Longs Drug Store changed its name to CVS Pharmacy. The CVS Pharmacy is located Ralphs Westchester at Sepulveda at Westchester Parkway, near Lincoln (sort-of) in Los Angeles, California. Ralphs Westchester was builts first, due to its success, Longs Drugs was then built next door. About a block down the street, at Lincoln is another CVS Pharmacy, formerly a Sav-on Drug Store. The cashier at the new CVS store said they were keeping both CVS Stores. Also in this shopping center is Pet Co (former JJ Newberrys then Flax Art Store, now sub divided into Petco, Tuesday Morning and misc. Shops.
In the shopping center connected to the former Mervyns Department Store is the other CVS Pharmacy Store, a former Sav-on Drug Store. This other CVS Pharmacy store is located in a companion shopping center and separtated by less than a mile from the former Longs now CSW Store. In this shopping center is Trader Joes Market, CVS Pharmacy Store, TJ Maxx (former JC Penny Department Store), Pandera Bakery, Hometown Buffet, some misc. shops.
