Nothing to do but scuff down
the graveyard road behind the playground,
past the name-stones lined up in rows
beneath their guardian pines,
on out into the long, low waves of plains
that dissolved time. We'd angle off
from fence and telephone line, through
ribbon-grass that closed behind as though
we'd never been, and drift toward the bluff
above the river-bend where the junked pickup
moored with its load of locust-skeletons.
Stretched across the blistered hood, we let
our dresses catch the wind while clouds above
dimmed their pink to purple, then shadow-blue—
So slow, we listened to our own bones grow.

The Restless Earth borrows its title from a collection of poems by Édouard Glissant, a Caribbean writer who probed the question of how different cultures can coexist. The exhibition shares in Glissant’s project—a pressing and necessary one that tries to describe this unstable and agitated present as a polyphony of voices and narratives. Through the works of more than sixty artists from more than forty countries—such as Albania, Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, and Turkey—and with historical documents and objects of material culture, this exhibition charts both experiences and perceptions of migration and the current refugee crisis as an epoch-making transformation that is reframing contemporary history, geography, and culture.
The Restless Earth explores real and imaginary geographies, reconstructing the odyssey of migrants through personal and collective tales of exodus inspired by varying degrees of urgency and longing. The exhibition revolves around a series of geographic and thematic lines of inquiry—the war in Syria, the state of emergency in Lampedusa, life in refugee camps, the figure of the nomad or stateless person, and Italian migration in the early 20th century—which intersect with works that serve as visual metaphors for conditions of mobility and precariousness.
The Restless Earth focuses in particular on how artists bear witness to historic events, and how art can describe social and political change in the first person. The works on view point to a renewed faith that art and artists have a responsibility to portray and transform the world, creating not just images of conflict, but images that provide a space for critical thinking and exchange. Together, these stories—poised between historical epic and real-time diary—yield a vision of art as lyrical journalism, emotional documentary, and vivid, vital testimony.

Sorry I have been away so long....I hope you are all well and ready for the Holidays!
Had a look through my flickr for the first time in ages, and realised I hadn't uploaded anything since going to university. I've been working in black and white film since starting in September, and have done nothing at all abstract, so it was refreshing to go back to digital, colour and photoshop!

Happy Furry Friday! You may be keenly aware of what you want today and not at all hesitant about trying to get it. You may find your usually compromising nature may transition to one of intense willfulness. You may be so determined to get what you want, you could find yourself in the middle of multiple negotiations with others. Though your resolve is firm, you may have more luck in convincing others to see your point of view by first taking stock of your mind-set, the situation, and the needs of the people surrounding you. Consider that a forceful attitude may be less effective than a calm tone and a willingness to explore other points of view. Look at each new situation individually in order to logically determine how best to proceed.
Knowing yourself and what you want can make you a more effective negotiator. Often, we approach debates or disagreements – even with ourselves – in an emotional way, letting what we feel overshadow the point we’re trying to convey. Having a sense of where you stand on an issue before engaging in debate will help you determine how you can best approach negotiations. Different situations may call for different tactics, and it often serves us best to be logical rather than becoming too emotional when we engage in bargaining. Know what you want before you begin negotiating for it, and you’ll likely end up on the winner’s side. Enjoy your weekend!
