For a couple summers in the mid-to-late 1990s, my brother was a counsellor at St. Anne's Camp. He'd never been back since, so I drove him out to revisit memories from more than half his life ago. It's an isolated outpost, run then and still now by the Anglicans. Deep in the woods and far from power, peaceful place to be on the shores of Gibsons Lake. I've often settled in at the roadside on the far shore, by the old church and graveyard – watching the darkest, clearest skies fill with starlight or moonshine. When I'm here, it's restless to reflect on the meaning of religion in my life. It has little pull when I'm on my own, far from a faith that's naturally based around rules of human interaction. There's little sin or redemption to be found in isolation, and it's equally tough to stray from peace. So I drift distant from everlasting worries, knowing that notions of Heaven hold more heart when you're happily alone. I come back better than I ever did from service.

This breath is not smooth, this mind not still.
The dust is heavy beneath the bed.
Even in the storm, I sit and breathe.
New life is near. I bow my head.
My wife Linda and I went camping up in north west of NSW on the weekend. Had a great time photographing birds and enjoying camping in the bush and relaxing by the camp fire. This bird and it's mate decided that the tree next to our tent was a great spot to spend time in and allowed full frame shots like this one. Restless Flycatchers make a most unusual grinding sound and in fact one of it's common names is "Scissors grinder". It was making that noise when I took this shot.
