Waterloo Underground Station

UPDATE SEP 2011 - #34 on Explore and Front Page for 23.09.2011 - thank you very much everybody! :-)

Wow what a mad couple of days, managed to get two of my latest photos into explore, www.flickr.com/photos/turnipfarmer/6165222097/in/photostream and www.flickr.com/photos/turnipfarmer/6161704317/in/photostream big thank you to those who looked and took the time to have a look at my photos, it is very much appreciated :-)

This photo is the Jubilee Line station of Waterloo Underground station.

It is one of a few stations that have doors protecting the track coming into the platform and I believe that it was only the new stations that were part of the Jubilee Line extension back in 1996 that received these, I don't think they are anywhere else on the London Underground network.

Maybe someone could clear this up for me but I always thought that these doors were used to stop people falling onto the track although they do serve this purpose but I was told that they were installed to help with ventilation and reduce the wind caused by the train approaching/leaving, anyone know the answer?

It took me ages to get the timing of this photo so I could see the 'FULL ON' on the advert at the rear. This is an HDR photo made from a single photo. Once tone-mapped in Photomatix I reimported back into Lightroom 3. I then had to sort out the barrel distortion in PTLens. I wanted to keep it a dark and grungy so kept most of the noise. Gave it a bit of post processing and thats it.

Information

Waterloo tube station is a London Underground station located at Waterloo station. It is the second busiest station on the network and is served by the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and the Waterloo & City lines. The station is in Travelcard Zone 1.

The first underground station at Waterloo was opened on 8 August 1898 by the Waterloo & City Railway (W&CR), a subsidiary of the owners of the main line station, the London and South Western Railway (L&SWR). The W&CR, nicknamed "the Drain" achieved in a limited way the L&SWR's original plan of taking its tracks the short distance north-east into the City of London.

On 10 March 1906, the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway (BS&WR, now the Bakerloo line) was opened. On 13 September 1926, the extension of the Hampstead & Highgate line (as the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line was then known) was opened from Embankment to the existing City & South London Railway station Kennington with a new station at Waterloo.

As a subsidiary of the L&SWR and its successor the Southern Railway, the W&CR was not a part of the London Underground system. Following nationalization of the main line railway companies in 1948, it became part of British Railways (later British Rail). Following a period of closure during 1993 when the line was converted to use the four rail electrical system of the London Underground, the ownership of Waterloo & City line was transferred to the Underground on 1 April 1994. Due to an Easter shut-down, the first London Underground service on the line was on 5 April 1994.

On 24 September 1999, the Jubilee line station was opened as part of the Jubilee Line Extension. The station was temporarily the western terminus of the extension running from Stratford in east London, before the final section to link the extension to the original line was opened between Waterloo and Green Park on 20 November 1999. The Jubilee platforms are at the opposite end of the site from those of the Bakerloo and Northern lines, but the two ends are connected by a 140-metre (460 ft) moving walkway link (one of only two on the Underground - the other gives access to the Waterloo & City line platform at Bank station).

First time of trying this spot in the Czech Republic. Here we see Regiojet locomotive 162118 working the 14:36 service from Usti nad Labem H.l.n to Kolin (1C1311) on the hot afternoon of the 5/9/23. The train was captured from the jetty in Usti nad Labem Strekov.

A quick shot before climbing onboard to Sargans, here we see SBB Re4/4 locomotive 11112 prior to departure from Chur with the 18:37 (IC936) service to Zurich on the evening of the 30/10/21.

Another new location, this time Ceska Trebova in the Czech Republic. Here we see CD Cargo locomotive 130002 cross the viaduct with a cement train heading south towards Praque on the evening of the 2/7/18

The station building at Nyngan is a good example of a railway station constructed at a terminus or other significant location in country NSW during a major phase of railway construction in NSW in the 1880s. Nyngan is one of the more remote railway locations in NSW but still warranted a substantial brick building which remains highly intact. The goods shed is a good representative example of a standard corrugated iron shed with attached office and timber platform.

The railway station is now used as the ‘Nyngan and District Museum’.

Here we see RhB Ge4/4 locomotive 632 working the 11:44 service from Disentis to Chur on the morning of the 6/11/23. The train was captured in Disla near Disentis/Muster.

** For info, there were only 3 locomotives out on the Disentis to Chur corridor on the day in question - these were 623, 626 and 632. The 4th daytime diagram was covered by a pair of units, which resulted in some logistical challenges.

The end was near at the time of posting this image sadly with more and more units invading the RhB, which in my opinion is a backward step for this splendid railway!

Pacific National's southbound steel train, 2WM2, has just crested through Cooks Cutting and is commencing the 7 kilometre straight rails to Breadalbane and beyond. This was a massive and heavy train, beset by problems today, resulting in it being over eight hours late at this point.

Not my best shot due to having issues with camera at the time. Anyway, here we see 56006 (blue) and 56098 (large logo) bring up the rear of a service going to Peterborough. For info, the HST prototype 41001 was up front.

In cold and misty conditions, OBB Railjet being worked by 1116 236 passes through Gries Im Pinzgau on the morning of the 10/2/18 with RJ1265 from Worgl to Wien. For info, the embankment in this area was undergoing strengthening works, but due to it being a Saturday, there were no trucks or workmen about making this shot possible.

Abellio Greater Anglia class 90 locomotive no.90014 was photographed working the 10:30 Norwich to London (1P29) on the morning of the 23/4/16 under dark clouds and sunshine.

Canary Wharf Underground Station, London, England

This image was one of my first choice images to upload but I was just experimenting around and I liked the result. I really liked the reflections and the way the marks and grains in the stainless steel on the London Underground roundel come out.

So its London Open House this weekend. Anyone going? London Open House is where buildings in London open their doors to the general public. These buildings are normal closed to the public throughout the year. I am and really looking forward to it after being for the first time last year. However as you may have read on other photographers blogs and uploads the ticket process was a bit of a shambles this year with some people getting tickets for the venues you need to book and others not getting anything. Luckily I got one venue booked before the system crashed but hopefully will be a better experience for all next year.

Hopefully will revisit Lloyds Building and City Hall this year as I now have my Sigma 10-20 and Samyang fisheye, will be interested to see how images come out there. Others I am thinking of going to is the Brunel Museum, 1 Finsbury Circus and of course the one that everyone has been waiting for is the Gherkin, can't wait for that.

I might see some of you there. :-)

Information

Canary Wharf tube station is a London Underground station on the Jubilee Line, between Canada Water and North Greenwich. It is in Travelcard Zone 2 and was opened by Ken Livingstone setting an escalator in motion on 17 September 1999 as part of the Jubilee Line Extension. It is maintained by Tube Lines. Over 40 million people pass through the station each year, making it not only the busiest station on the London Underground outside Central London but also the busiest that serves only a single line. (The DLR station is completely separate.)

Almost out of time with the fading light, here we see SJ X2000 Powercar 2016 working the late running 15:53 service from Stockholm Central to Göteborg Central (Train 405) on the evening of the 1/5/24. The train was captured passing through Västra Bodarna.

SBB Cargo diesel loco no.843 055 rounds the curve with a small mixed freight heading towards Thun on the afternoon of the 27/8/15

Here we see 754014 assisting 163108 which failed on the mainline towards Zilina blocking it for a few hours and was rescued by this thunderbird after running light engine from Vrutky bang road. I am not sure which service the class 163 suffered technical issues on, but it ran pass this location empty stock and went into the siding at Vrutky for attention.

On Boxing Day morning, RhB Ge4/4iii loco no.651 was captured near Bever working the 08:58 service from Chur to St Moritz. Taken on the 26/12/16

In poor weather conditions, 90037 was captured on the outskirts of Prestbury in Cheshire on the morning of the 12/2/17 working 1Z80 from London Euston to Burnley Manchester Road (the 90 came off at Stockport for a diesel forward).

From the 2018 archives - here we see CD unit 660 108 passing through Opatov on the morning of the 9/7/18 with a unidentifable service from Praha to Brno.

Network Rail test train DMU no.950001 stabled at Euston on the evening of the 27/9/16

A new spot for photography in Europe - at the time of visiting Czech, this train was loco-hauled vice a JMK unit. Here we see CD Skoda locomotive 242229 waiting to depart from the terminus station of Krenovice Horni Nadrazi with the 10:58 service to Rajec-Jestrebi on the morning of the 5/1/23.

In early January 2023, a number of services which were due to be units were still loco-hauled due to a late delivery of the new units.

Freightliner class 66 locomotive no.66538 passes Weston village in Staffordshire near Hixon between Stone and Colwich on the morning of the 30/4/16 with the diverted 4O27 from Garston to Southampton. This train would normally go via Stafford and the West Midlands, but engineering work closed the line for the bank holiday weekend, so it was diverted via Stoke and the WCML as far as Nuneaton.

A new spot for lineside photography - here we see SJ X2000 High Speed Tilting Train Power Car no. 2017 in an updated livery working the 09:24 service from Goteborg Central to Stockholm Central (train 428) on the morning of the 26/4/24. The train was captured passing through Jonsered station not far from Goteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden.

Preserved locomotive 1042.23 working a Sonderzug from Spittal to Mallnitz-O on the afternoon of the 27/8/16 which was captured on the outskirts of Penk, Austria

This is a new lineside photography opportunity which has opened up following engineering work on the Semmering Bahn near Küb bahnhof. Here we see OBB locomotives 1116 150 (front), 1144 008 (middle) and 1144 116 (rear) pass through Küb with a mixed freight enroute towards Semmering and beyond on the afternoon of the 4/9/24.

*For info, please note that I was stood on a small folding stepstool to take this shot, which provided me with some extra height*

OBB chose to use a Vectron loco instead of the usual 1142/1144 for piloting certain trains between Bischofshofen and Selzthal on the 15/2/20.

Here we see an extremely tatty 1293 017 at Bischofshofen on the evening of the 15/2/20 after piloting IC610 from Selzthal to Bischofshofen with 1144 112 on the other end of this consist. I was fortunate enough to have travelled on this train with the 1293 and 1144 from Schaldming to Bischofshofen.

For info 1293 017 worked back from Bischofshofen to Selzthal on EC219, with DB loco 101 102.
