Once a classic shot on the Gotthard Bahn, here we see SBB locomotives 11666 (front) and 113xx (rear) snaking round Wattinger Curve in Wassen on the afternoon of the 22/6/16 with a loaded intermodal enroute to Goschenen and beyond (presumably Italy).
Here we see OBB locomotives 1144 200 (rear) and 1144 242 (front) working hard in top and tail mode in Altenmarkt on the morning of the 12/2/20 with the 07:45 Intercity service from Graz to Salzburg (IC512).
For info, during the winter months, this train is booked to have two locomotives, one on each end due to the challenging terrain and snowy conditions.
High above the vineyards of Lavaux, at Grandvaux in the canton of Vaud, a SBB Cargo Re 620 (ex Re 6/6) climbs the Lausanne–Bern main line. The locomotive, no. 620-029, belongs to a series that represented for decades the backbone of Swiss heavy freight traction, originally built for the Gotthard and still in daily service.
Behind it, Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) stretches into the distance, with the terraced vineyards of Lavaux — a UNESCO World Heritage site — forming one of Switzerland’s most striking railway landscapes. Here, raw freight power and timeless scenery meet: a classic Re 6/6 threading its way uphill through the vines above the Léman.
At 1,188 tonnes, the unit tank train 69512 (Cornaux – Romont, 124 km) is well within the capabilities of the 10,600 hp Re 620, which handles the gradients with ease.

Here we see ABe4/4 motor vehicles 54 & 55 working the 11:49 service from St Moritz to Tirano on the afternoon of the 23/2/20. The train was captured passing through Ospizio Bernina.
Accessing this spot from the station was very challenging on this visit and often dangerous underfoot due to the deep snow combined with biting winds (not for the faint hearted).
Here we see SBB re4/4 locomotive 11152 pass through Walenstadt with the 12:07 IC service from Zurich to Chur just as the clouds were beginning to break following a period of rain, sleet and snow on the 11/2/22.
For info, the shot further down the line towards Sargans was not on for this working due to the low lying cloud - this was the only spot where the sun was beginning to break.
After travelling overnight from Sweden via Germany, then into Austria and appearing at this location just as the sun rose above the mountain tops, here we see privately owned 111 057 working the 14:40 departure from Malmo to Innsbruck (D305). The train was captured passing through Pfarrwerfen, Austria on the morning of the 30/12/22.
Here we see OBB locomotive 1144 281 passing through the Autumn landscape of Pfarrwerfen in Austria on the afternoon of the 25/10/19. The train was the 09:52 service from Worgl to Salzburg (REX1511).
No Autumn trip to the Austrian Alps for 2020 due to Covid-19.
This image was captured on the final full day of a 2 week winter tour of the Austrian and Swiss Alps. Here we see HGe4/4 loco no.4 working the 12:28 service from Andermatt to Disentis on the afternoon of the 24/2/20. The train was captured in Natschen high up in the Swiss Alps.
Having just arrived at Zurich from the UK by train for a Christmas break, I was greeted by this working. Here we see heritage unit RAe4/8 1021 working the 17:30 dining charter service to a unknown destination on Christmas Eve Evening 24/12/22.
I had no prior knowledge of this charter, so it was a nice treat. If anyone knows the origin/destination, that would be appreciated :-)
Following extensive snowfall the previous day, OBB Taurus loco E190 013 (1216 013) rounds the curve in St Jodok at lunchtime on the 2/5/17 with EC88 from Verona to Munich

EN - Train 47635, a block grain service loaded to 1,800 tonnes, runs south from Vallorbe towards Lausanne and the Simplon route, passing the church of Bretonnières with Re 620 013 in charge.
In freight coding, the train is a PERT - CUN. It originates at PERT, Perrigny Triage (marshalling yard) near Dijon (France), and is destined for CUN, meaning Cuneo.
The Re 620 provides traction between Vallorbe and Domodossola, before the consist continues deeper into Italy under FS/RFI control. This service is a regular heavy grain flow moving from French production areas into the Italian market via the Simplon corridor.

FR - Devant l’église de Bretonnières, le train 47635 de 1800 tonnes tracté par la Re 620 013 descend de Vallorbe en direction de Lausanne et du Simplon.
C’est un train complet chargé de céréales. En langage ferroviaire codé, il provient de PERT et il est à destination de CUN. PERT est Perrigny Triage, à côté de Dijon, en France et CUN est Cuneo (Coni en français). Merci à Sebafor pour m'avoir aidé à identifier ce code.
La Re620 assure la traction depuis Vallorbe jusqu’à Domodossola.

Stood on the side of a vicarious snowy hillside, we see an OBB S-Bahn unit 4024 100 pass through Wolf on the morning of the 7/2/ with the 10:33 service from Brenner to Kufstein.
On New Year Eve 2016, OBB Taurus loco 1216 141 was photographed working a mixed freight train in Faak Am See on New Years Eve 31/12/16.
Here we see HGe4/4 loco no,3 making its way up from Andermatt to Natschen on the cold sunny afternoon of the 8/12/16 with the 14:28 service from Andermatt to Disentis/Muster

OBB S-Bahn unit 4024 118 rounds the curve in St Jodok, Austria on a perfect winter's morning with fresh snow. The S-Bahn unit was working the 07:34 service from Kufstein to Brenner on the 7/2/20.

EN - SBB Cargo’s Re 620 009 (ex Re 6/6, 10,600 hp) leads unit oil train 69516 Cornaux – St-Triphon through Villette (canton of Vaud) on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. The 1,900 tonnes consist of tank cars carries petroleum products from the Cornaux refinery (canton of Neuchâtel) to Tamoil’s distribution terminal at St-Triphon.
In the background stands the church of the parish of Bourg-en-Lavaux, overlooking vineyards that form part of the UNESCO-listed Lavaux wine terraces, with the Jura mountains closing the horizon across the lake.

First shot of 2021 and a new location too - here we see DB Cargo class 60 locomotive 60066 passing through Stenson with the 11:04 empty petroleum service from Kingsbury oil terminal to Humber Oil Terminal at lunchtime on the 12/1/21.
For info, freight trains heading towards Burton and beyond are often held here on the Up line for long periods of time, which will interfere with trains coming the opposite way. This has been a problem for me on 4 previous visits to this spot,. A few moments before this turned up, a freight was held here almost jeopardising the shot.
745 701 von RailTransport-Stift überführte am 07. November 2019 einen RegioJet-Schlafwagen von Prag nach Karsdorf. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit diesen Zug, der stark an die damaligen Nahverkehrszüge erinnert, im Bahnhof Barthmühle bei einem Kreuzungsaufenthalt zu fotografieren.
Extreme cold weather hit this part of Austria prior to the arrival of Storm Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, which brought two weeks worth of cloud, rain, hail, wind and snow to the region with very little sunshine, which made for a challenging photography holiday.
With a morning temperature of -16C, here we see a class 411 DB ICE unit (no pun intended) passing through Hogmoos and the frozen river with ICE1282 from Schwarzach St-Veit to Munich on the morning of the 13/2/22.
First time visiting this location despite travelling through it many times. Here we see OBB 4746 010 CityJet working REX1516 from Salzburg to Saalfelden captured in Hogmoos near Taxenbach-Ruaris on the afternoon of the 4/2/18

Standing high up on the hillside looking down into the valley, we see OBB 1144 247 pass through Hogmoos near Taxenbach-Ruaris at lunchtime on the 4/2/18 working REX1513 from Worgl to Schwarzach-St Veit with the added bonus of a calm river enabling reflections to be captured.

Lokomotion Vectron 193774 pulls away from Bockstein in Austria on the 14/2/20 with a mixed freight working heading towards Mallnitz and beyond. For info, the train was banked by a class 186 Traxx to Bockstein.
