Here we see OBB locomotives 1116 126 (front) and 1293 035 (rear) working an intermodal freight on the outskirts of Bad Hofgastein on the afternoon of the 24/10/19 heading towards Villach and beyond, which passed just in time for the falling sun.

Looking across the frozen snow covered lake in the Oberalppass, here we see MGB HGe4/4 locomotive 101 working the 11:28 service from Andermatt to Disentis/Muster on the morning of the 24/2/20.

CN rail maintenance crews were out this morning repairing part of the tracks that run through St. Henri this morning at St. Ambroise and St. Augustin streets.

Today's northbound combined container/steel train is seen dashing down to Joppa Junction, just south of Goulburn NSW, behind the mighty lash up that includes two NRs, two ANs and a BL. Although not all are online, it nevertheless makes for great viewing.

As part of a special weekend of locomotive workings on the RhB, one of the star attractions was steam engine no.11 named "Heidi". Here we see the locomotive about to work the 19:35 special to S-Chanf on the evening of the 14/10/16

Here we see JungfrauBahn BDhe4/8 Units 216 & 215 head to the top of Europe on the afternoon of the 26/8/15 which was captured in the Kleine Scheidegg area high up in the Alps near Mount Eiger

Pacific National's mixed steel train dips into Run-o-Waters Creek bridge at Joppa Junction as it gains speed after being giving way to the Canberra passenger train. A nice lash up of a pair of back to back NR class GE-powered locomotives on this day.

Northern abutment of the Moorish Arch. The arch not only functioned as a bridge but also housed the winding engines to wind trains up from Wapping or up to Crown Street Passenger Station. These were located in the abutments on each side.

On August 31, 2022 some members of the committee of the Merseyside Industrial Heritage Society were invited by Network Rail and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Trust to Chatsworth Street Cutting at Edge Hill to view the remains of the Edge Hill Engine Station. The location adjacent to the site of the famous Moorish Arch where locomotives were attached to Manchester bound trains or detached from Liverpool bound trains. The site was once open to the public as part of the Rocket 150 Rail Train in 1980 but has since become very derelict and over grown again.

 

However, in August 2022 it was announced that this important site on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway has now been granted scheduled monument status by Historic England. It is hoped that in due course the historic features can once again be displayed to the public.

Leap years come once every 4 years - for this year's extra bonus day, it was spent on the Brenner Bahn in sunny conditions and some snow.

 

Here we see a rather dirty OBB Taurus E190 015 (1216 015) still sporting its Italian flag (the only one left) working EC81 from Munich to Bologna on the morning of the 29/2/24. The train was captured passing through Wolf on the Brenner Bahn.

Time to take action on climate change - we all need to do our bit no matter how big or small to safeguard the planet for wildlife, the natural environment and future generations.

 

Moving on, here we see Avanti West Coast Pendolino 390 119 passing through Docker in Cumbria on the morning of the 6/5/25 with 9M51 from Edinburgh to London Euston va Birmingham.

 

This spot was accessed following a 7 mile cycle ride from Oxenholmne station after a 5am start to reach Cumbria.

FGW HST on hire to Hull Trains with power cars 43020 (front) and 43010 (rear) waits to depart Kings Cross on the afternoon of the 5/5/19 with the 12:48 service to Hull (1H03). The planned class 180 was out of service at the time of this shot when taken.

On a dull and overcast morning, RhB DC Crocodile 182 and motor coach 35 wait to depart from the carriage sidings at Bulle station with the 10:33 special charter train to Gstaad. Unfortunately the weather was very dull and misty following thunderstorms in the region the day before.

Here we see an ELL Vectron locomotive 193765 working a lightly loaded intermodal on the outskirts of Bischofshofen, Austria.

Thames Tunnel, London, England

 

This is the Brunel built Thames Tunnel, a masterpiece of engineering! If you get chance to do this tour I highly recommend it however they only come round every few years either at Xmas or Easter as they close the tunnel to trains for engineering work.

 

I do feel so privileged to have walked this tunnel and I am a massive fan of anything Brunel. Its such a beautiful tunnel, asymmetric in nature compared to a normal tunnel which is often symmetrical. Its amazing really that this tunnel was original designed to be a foot tunnel for pedestrians to walk under the Thames River and also there would have been shops down here too selling stuff, mostly tourist merchandise. Then it was decided to put the next massive engineering marvel of the world through it, the Steam Train. These run for a good few years before it was stopped and the tunnel was left empty but now the West London Line runs through here taking passengers from A to B. So for me it was quite fitting to walk through it as it was originally intended but also at the same time being a Train Driver myself it was great to see an awesome looking tunnel built by the Railway Engineer himself, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Location Information

The Thames Tunnel is an underwater tunnel, built beneath the River Thames in London, connecting Rotherhithe and Wapping. It measures 35 feet (11 m) wide by 20 feet (6 m) high and is 1,300 feet (396 m) long, running at a depth of 75 feet (23 m) below the river surface measured at high tide. It was the first tunnel known to have been constructed successfully underneath a navigable river,[1] and was built between 1825 and 1843 using Thomas Cochrane and Marc Isambard Brunel's newly invented tunnelling shield technology, by him and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

 

The tunnel was originally designed for, but never used by, horse-drawn carriages. It now forms part of the London Overground railway network.

Taking advantage of the earlier sunrise after the clocks changed the day before by 1 hour, here we see RhB Ge4/4 locomotive 623 on the outskirts of Saas in Switzerland on the morning of the 27/10/19 working the 06:44 service from Disentis to Scoul-Tarasp

ZSSK class 350 locomotive no.350004 on the outskirts of Krpelany, Slovakia. It looks like the loco was working the late running R606 from Kosice to Bratislava H.L.on the afternoon of the 15/8/17 as there was nothing else due to pass at the time.

Here we see MRCE Vectron 193652 on the outskirts of Pfarrwerfen on the afternoon of the 13/9/22 with a lightly loaded intermodal bound for Italy. Unfortunately, the shutter failed at the original point of taking this image, but a very quick reset managed this capture instead.

The station opened in 1882 and was originally named Börse (stock exchange) and then Marx-Engels-Platz during the GDR era. In 1992 it received the name Hackescher Markt from the adjacent square. Following the demolition of the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof (architecturally similar and previously listed), with Bellevue it is now one of only two Stadtbahn stations preserved in their original condition.

Record shot of OBB locomotive 1116 231 at St Polten on the evening of the 23/2/22 after taking this train for a ride from Wien Hbf. The loco is working the 20:30 service from Wien Hbf to Salzburg (RJX42). Unfortunately there was no time to leap to the opposite platform for a better shot (sorry).

CFCLA's freightliner liveried CF class locos are seen approaching and arriving at Goulburn NSW. It is believed they may now be off hire to Freightliner and possibly to be repainted back to CFCLA colours.

Still learning how to photograph trains in 2015 and on the wrong side for the sun, but managed this image of Crossrail Traxx loco's 186903 (front) & 186906 (rear) which were captured climbing out of Erstfeld heading south towards Italy on a container train on the morning of the 22/8/15.

A day trip to Italy before the strike took place on the 22nd and 23rd February 2025, which was when I had planned to visit Italy, therefore had to change things to to avoid the strike.

 

Whilst walking back to the station from another spot (with camera still round my neck and folding step stool in hand), this freight turned up unknowingly after looking round. It was a case of point and shoot and hope for the best with this working.

 

Here we see Lokomotion locomotive 412 008 (EU-43-008) working a mixed freight train on the afternoon of the 20/2/25 enroute towards Trento and beyond.

Ever since I visited the incredibly awesome ghost town of Kolmanskop in the Namibian desert, I've been pretty interested in exploring other ghost towns. Bodie is supposed to be the best one in California, and as for Nevada, Rhyolite is apparently right on up there. I don't think it'll be possible to find anything as impressive as Kolmanskop in the western world, but that's not going to stop me from looking.

Final day of Christmas 2017 trip - Here we see RhB Ge6/6 locomotive 707 at Ilanz on the morning of the 27/12/17 waiting to work the 07:53 service to Chur. Note that there were no freight wagons for this mixed service on the morning in question and it ran with just 2 passenger carriages as shown in this image.

Here we see MRCE Vectron 193654 (front) and Lokomotion Vectron 193777 make the climb towards Brenner and beyond on the 21/10/19.

OBB electric multiple unit 4024 088 pauses at Gries Am Brenner on the afternoon of the 1/5/17 with the 12:33 service from Brenner to Innsbruck. Note there is still some snow which fell a few days earlier.

RhB Ge4/4ii locomotive 614 was captured approaching Zernez on the afternoon of the 25/2/19 with the 14:02 service from Pontresina to Scoul-Tarasp (RE1345).

OBB CityJet 4746 035 passes through Tenneck on the morning of the 26/10/19 working REX1512 from Salzburg to Saalfelden

Visited this spot to see if it would work or not due to the time of year. It is fair to say that February is still too early for the morning and afternoon shots at this location (sun is still too low).

 

Anyway, here we see Taurus locomotive 470502 working the 12:15 service from Budapest Keleti to Szombathely (IC934). The train was captured passing through the famous Szar on the afternoon of the 15/2/23.

Marienplatz U-Bahn Station, Munich, Germany

 

In complete contrast to the previous station but still just as bold, they love their bold colours on their underground system in Munich and I think they are awesome!

 

This is probably one of the busiest U-Bahn stations on the Munich Metro as its a busy interchange and serves the city centre so I had to be very quick in getting the photo I wanted without people in. I actually quite like the discarded newspaper you see in the photo, gives the image a slight '28 Days Later' feel about it.

 

I think the only orange like this that I can think of that is on our London Underground network is at Bond Street unless I am mistaken (please tell me if I am) but this whole station is completely orange.

 

Apologies to those who are a bit lost off with the title of this image or it has become lost in translation somewhere. I have named this image after an advert that aired in the early 1990s here in the UK for a popular orange soft drink called 'Tango'. It was a very funny advert and well worth a watch again if you get chance (I have provided you with the link below). All this orange just reminded me of this advert from when I was a kid.

Location Information

München Marienplatz is an important stop on the Munich S-Bahn and U-Bahn network, located under the square of the same name in Munich's city centre. The S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7 and S8 intersect with the U-Bahn lines U3 and U6. The station is one of the most frequently used stations in the network, with up to 24,400 people transferring and 8,000 passengers entering or exiting each hour. In 2007, 175,400 used the station daily on weekdays, including entries, exits and transfers.

 

In October 1966 construction was started, finishing in October 1971 as part of the new S-Bahn network for the 1972 Summer Olympics. Until early 2003 there were almost no further refurbishments done at the station. From 2003 to 2006, the platforms of the U-Bahn were widened to expand passenger capacity and were lifted by 4 cm to secure same-level boarding.

 

Under the Zweite Stammstrecke ("Second main line") tunnel project, Marienplatz station is to be connected to a second station further north, Marienhof, via the enlarged subway access tunnels on the fourth level.

A small hole of blue sky worked it's magic for this shot - here we see Class 20 locomotives 20142 (front) and 20189 (rear) working the late running 17:30 service from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth on the stormy evening of the 17/5/24. The train was captured on the outskirts of Bewdley as part of the 2024 Spring Diesel Gala event.

Two ex-Danish Nohab MZ class "Toasters" led a CFCLA CM class on todays southbound empty containerised Visy paper train to Harefield in southern NSW.

Seen here sweeping through the well known twin bridges curve, alongside the Hume Highway at Yarra, just south of Goulburn NSW.

Here we see Freightliner locomotive 66556 with a small rake of former coal wagons passing through Breadsall with 4V66 from York Sidings to Long Marston on the chilly morning of the 6/4/21. It is not known why the wagons went to Long Marston, but can only assume they were to be stored or scrapped!

Southern Shorthaul Railroad's southern wheat train, sporting their brand new Chinese-built hoppers is seen rolling through Goulburn NSW behind a trio of CRL liveried locomotives. This was only the second run on the Main South of this trio of EMD power, the first in daylight. They looked a treat.

Thames Tunnel, London, England

 

You may have all thought I have all deserted you all but fear not I am back. I have not had the internet for the best part of 5 weeks or so and also busy training in my new job, however I am slowly getting back into the photography flow ;-).

 

I had a day visit down to London yesterday with Mark Hepples to have a super rare tour of the Thames Tunnel built by Marc Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. You would not believe how long I have been waiting to visit this tunnel, I missed out on the last tour back in 2010 and this tour is only the 3rd time in the tunnels history its been open to pedestrians with the first being when it first opened in 1843. This view you are looking at is looking back from Wapping Station end towards Rotherhithe Station.

 

Being a massive fan of architecture I had to visit this tunnel as it could be years before its open to the public again, if not ever! The tickets sold out very quickly and the main reason why its open to the public is because there was engineering work on the East London Line so it was a perfect opportunity to open the tunnel to the public. Also aside from my photographic interest, I have also an interest in this tunnel closer to home being a train driver as my day job. I have driven through tunnels in and around London and other parts of the country and I can assure you all that this is the most 'beautiful' tunnel I have ever travelled through. For the keener eyed viewers don't worry the 3rd rail traction current was turned off ;-).

The planned location for today before heading home was the Rhine, but the weather was disappointing, so was forced to look elsewhere. At a new location and spot, which I came across by pure chance, here we see DB Cargo locomotives 152143 (front) and 152134 (rear) pass through Uebach-Palenberg near Aachen on the afternoon of the 1/3/23.
