Walking on an old abandoned line near my home, the fall color, light and closing in of the above branches was a nice find. If I was a people photographer, this would undoubtedly be a spot I would use.

(This is a disconnected trail that is soon to be a walking path. No danger here. I did my safety homework!).
A brand new spot for lineside photography at the time of taking this image. At sunrise, here we see Freightliner locomotives 90008 (front) and 90040 (rear) pass through Stafford on the slow line with 4M45 from Felixstowe to Garston F.L.T. on the morning of the 6/12/24.

After returning from a planned overhaul and paintjob a few weeks before, Abellio released 90008 back into traffic. We see her pass over the estuary in Cattawade, Manningtree working the 10:30 Norwich to London (1P29) looking very shiny on the 2/7/16
From the Archives: With a dusting of snow on the mountains, here we see OBB locomotive 1144 029 propelling the 09:53 service from Worgl to Salzburg (REX1511) at lunchtime on the 13/2/23. The train was captured passing through Pfarrwerfen, Austria.
A nice little treat of heritage traction for the extra day, pity they weren't hauling a freight train though. Here we see Lokomotion engines 139 177 (front), 139 260 (middle) and 139 135 (rear) pass through Wolf on the Brenner Bahn with a light engine movement towards Innsbruck on the morning of the 29/2/24.
With partial sunny conditions in the background, MRCE Vectron 193653 and Lokomotion 189904 were photographed making the climb to Steinach in Tirol on the afternoon of the 18/2/20 with a loaded set of wagons conveying steel/scrap metals. For info, 139260 could be found powering this train from the rear as a banker engine.
The first run for the 2018-2019 season of the Krokus Express ski train from Dan Haag to Schaldming was photographed at Bischofshofen running 20 minutes late on the evening of the 16/2/19. The loco was 182601 and I believe the train ID is DRV13186....
Here we see a record shot of former DB Cargo locomotive 90040 on test for Freightliner with 90045 for company at Stafford on the afternoon of the 14/11/24. The pair of class 90s were working 0Z91 from Basford Hall to Basford Hall via Stafford.
The path for 0Z91 appeared on the system at the very last minute, which gave me no time to get lineside, so had to do make do with a station shot instead, which was severely hampered by a Class 350 unit in the adjacent platform and the position of the sun at this time of day.
**For information, 90040 was sold to Freightliner back in the Spring of 2024 following the decision by DB Cargo not to use their class 90s anymore :-( It is good to see that the former DB loco has retained its red livery albeit faded with FL branding and look forward to seeing her working trains across the UK network once again assuming the tests are successful**
Unipetrol (part of the Orlen Group) locomotive 753719 was photographed working in top and tail mode with 753716 on a tanker train on the 3/7/18 captured passing through Bezpravi in the Czech Republic.
Here we see DB locomotive 66131 heading south through Baldwins Gate on the afternoon of the 20/7/21 with the 13:08 intermodal from Trafford Park to London Gateway.

Here we see OBB locomotives 1116 126 (front) and 1293 035 (rear) working an intermodal freight on the outskirts of Bad Hofgastein on the afternoon of the 24/10/19 heading towards Villach and beyond, which passed just in time for the falling sun.
Looking across the frozen snow covered lake in the Oberalppass, here we see MGB HGe4/4 locomotive 101 working the 11:28 service from Andermatt to Disentis/Muster on the morning of the 24/2/20.
CN rail maintenance crews were out this morning repairing part of the tracks that run through St. Henri this morning at St. Ambroise and St. Augustin streets.
As part of a special weekend of locomotive workings on the RhB, one of the star attractions was steam engine no.11 named "Heidi". Here we see the locomotive about to work the 19:35 special to S-Chanf on the evening of the 14/10/16
Here we see GBRF locomotive 66787 passing through Sutton Bonnington on the afternoon of the 4/4/21 with the 14:10 Engineers train from Toton North Yard to Wood Green Signal K453.

Here we see JungfrauBahn BDhe4/8 Units 216 & 215 head to the top of Europe on the afternoon of the 26/8/15 which was captured in the Kleine Scheidegg area high up in the Alps near Mount Eiger
Pacific National's mixed steel train dips into Run-o-Waters Creek bridge at Joppa Junction as it gains speed after being giving way to the Canberra passenger train. A nice lash up of a pair of back to back NR class GE-powered locomotives on this day.
Northern abutment of the Moorish Arch. The arch not only functioned as a bridge but also housed the winding engines to wind trains up from Wapping or up to Crown Street Passenger Station. These were located in the abutments on each side.

On August 31, 2022 some members of the committee of the Merseyside Industrial Heritage Society were invited by Network Rail and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Trust to Chatsworth Street Cutting at Edge Hill to view the remains of the Edge Hill Engine Station. The location adjacent to the site of the famous Moorish Arch where locomotives were attached to Manchester bound trains or detached from Liverpool bound trains. The site was once open to the public as part of the Rocket 150 Rail Train in 1980 but has since become very derelict and over grown again.
However, in August 2022 it was announced that this important site on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway has now been granted scheduled monument status by Historic England. It is hoped that in due course the historic features can once again be displayed to the public.

Leap years come once every 4 years - for this year's extra bonus day, it was spent on the Brenner Bahn in sunny conditions and some snow.
Here we see a rather dirty OBB Taurus E190 015 (1216 015) still sporting its Italian flag (the only one left) working EC81 from Munich to Bologna on the morning of the 29/2/24. The train was captured passing through Wolf on the Brenner Bahn.
Time to take action on climate change - we all need to do our bit no matter how big or small to safeguard the planet for wildlife, the natural environment and future generations.
Moving on, here we see Avanti West Coast Pendolino 390 119 passing through Docker in Cumbria on the morning of the 6/5/25 with 9M51 from Edinburgh to London Euston va Birmingham.
This spot was accessed following a 7 mile cycle ride from Oxenholmne station after a 5am start to reach Cumbria.

FGW HST on hire to Hull Trains with power cars 43020 (front) and 43010 (rear) waits to depart Kings Cross on the afternoon of the 5/5/19 with the 12:48 service to Hull (1H03). The planned class 180 was out of service at the time of this shot when taken.
On a dull and overcast morning, RhB DC Crocodile 182 and motor coach 35 wait to depart from the carriage sidings at Bulle station with the 10:33 special charter train to Gstaad. Unfortunately the weather was very dull and misty following thunderstorms in the region the day before.

Thames Tunnel, London, England
This is the Brunel built Thames Tunnel, a masterpiece of engineering! If you get chance to do this tour I highly recommend it however they only come round every few years either at Xmas or Easter as they close the tunnel to trains for engineering work.
I do feel so privileged to have walked this tunnel and I am a massive fan of anything Brunel. Its such a beautiful tunnel, asymmetric in nature compared to a normal tunnel which is often symmetrical. Its amazing really that this tunnel was original designed to be a foot tunnel for pedestrians to walk under the Thames River and also there would have been shops down here too selling stuff, mostly tourist merchandise. Then it was decided to put the next massive engineering marvel of the world through it, the Steam Train. These run for a good few years before it was stopped and the tunnel was left empty but now the West London Line runs through here taking passengers from A to B. So for me it was quite fitting to walk through it as it was originally intended but also at the same time being a Train Driver myself it was great to see an awesome looking tunnel built by the Railway Engineer himself, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The Thames Tunnel is an underwater tunnel, built beneath the River Thames in London, connecting Rotherhithe and Wapping. It measures 35 feet (11 m) wide by 20 feet (6 m) high and is 1,300 feet (396 m) long, running at a depth of 75 feet (23 m) below the river surface measured at high tide. It was the first tunnel known to have been constructed successfully underneath a navigable river,[1] and was built between 1825 and 1843 using Thomas Cochrane and Marc Isambard Brunel's newly invented tunnelling shield technology, by him and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
The tunnel was originally designed for, but never used by, horse-drawn carriages. It now forms part of the London Overground railway network.
Taking advantage of the earlier sunrise after the clocks changed the day before by 1 hour, here we see RhB Ge4/4 locomotive 623 on the outskirts of Saas in Switzerland on the morning of the 27/10/19 working the 06:44 service from Disentis to Scoul-Tarasp
ZSSK class 350 locomotive no.350004 on the outskirts of Krpelany, Slovakia. It looks like the loco was working the late running R606 from Kosice to Bratislava H.L.on the afternoon of the 15/8/17 as there was nothing else due to pass at the time.

Here we see MRCE Vectron 193652 on the outskirts of Pfarrwerfen on the afternoon of the 13/9/22 with a lightly loaded intermodal bound for Italy. Unfortunately, the shutter failed at the original point of taking this image, but a very quick reset managed this capture instead.

The station opened in 1882 and was originally named Börse (stock exchange) and then Marx-Engels-Platz during the GDR era. In 1992 it received the name Hackescher Markt from the adjacent square. Following the demolition of the Lehrter Stadtbahnhof (architecturally similar and previously listed), with Bellevue it is now one of only two Stadtbahn stations preserved in their original condition.
Record shot of OBB locomotive 1116 231 at St Polten on the evening of the 23/2/22 after taking this train for a ride from Wien Hbf. The loco is working the 20:30 service from Wien Hbf to Salzburg (RJX42). Unfortunately there was no time to leap to the opposite platform for a better shot (sorry).
CFCLA's freightliner liveried CF class locos are seen approaching and arriving at Goulburn NSW. It is believed they may now be off hire to Freightliner and possibly to be repainted back to CFCLA colours.
Still learning how to photograph trains in 2015 and on the wrong side for the sun, but managed this image of Crossrail Traxx loco's 186903 (front) & 186906 (rear) which were captured climbing out of Erstfeld heading south towards Italy on a container train on the morning of the 22/8/15.
A day trip to Italy before the strike took place on the 22nd and 23rd February 2025, which was when I had planned to visit Italy, therefore had to change things to to avoid the strike.
Whilst walking back to the station from another spot (with camera still round my neck and folding step stool in hand), this freight turned up unknowingly after looking round. It was a case of point and shoot and hope for the best with this working.
Here we see Lokomotion locomotive 412 008 (EU-43-008) working a mixed freight train on the afternoon of the 20/2/25 enroute towards Trento and beyond.
Ever since I visited the incredibly awesome ghost town of Kolmanskop in the Namibian desert, I've been pretty interested in exploring other ghost towns. Bodie is supposed to be the best one in California, and as for Nevada, Rhyolite is apparently right on up there. I don't think it'll be possible to find anything as impressive as Kolmanskop in the western world, but that's not going to stop me from looking.
Final day of Christmas 2017 trip - Here we see RhB Ge6/6 locomotive 707 at Ilanz on the morning of the 27/12/17 waiting to work the 07:53 service to Chur. Note that there were no freight wagons for this mixed service on the morning in question and it ran with just 2 passenger carriages as shown in this image.
