On hire to DCR Rail, here we see Colas locomotive 56078 working the 09:01 from Middleton Towers to Ravenhead Sidings (6M89). The original loco (56091 owned by DCR) suffered technical issues the previous day in Derby, thus the hire-in.

The train was photographed passing through Rugeley Trent Valley running +2.5hrs early due to the national strike by Aslef drivers. This resulted in fewer passenger trains running on the network, which meant freight trains were left to run unimpeded.

For info, Rugeley was not in the intended shot, but due to the excessive early running, this was the only place that could be reached in time where a reasonably decent shot could be achieved given the position of the sun at 13:00 - had the train been on-time, the sun would have been on the nose of the loco rather than being side on :-(

Perched on the side of a hill in 2ft snow, which was extremely difficult to access and dangerous with a daytime temperature of -15 we see EC164 with 1144 091 + 1116 194 heading to Zurich on the 7/1/17. Real shame the sun did not shine for this special working.

Here we see RhB Ge4/4iii locomotive 643 making the final approach to Samedan bahnhof on the afternoon of the 21/2/20 with the 10:58 service from Chur to St Moritz (IR1133). ]

Due to a group of people behind me, this was the best shot that could be mustered up for this working in order to avoid people being in the image.

First time of seeing a Romanian locomotive and unexpected too. Here we see a Constantin Grup (part of the PKP Cargo family) locomotive 430109 working an intermodal train through Szar enroute towards Budapest and beyond on the 22/2/22.

The engine was built in the 1960s and use to be owned by CFR in Romania.

Unfortunately a naughty cloud partially blocked the sun as the train approached - naturally the unit behind was in full bling :-(

Here we see MAV Traxx locomotive 480 009 working IC937 from Szombathely to Budapest Keleti on the hot morning of the 21/8/24. The train was captured passing through Szar.

After photographing the ski trains in Austria the previous day, it was back to Switzerland by train. Here we see 46 & 47 complete with 9132, the generating running alongside the frozen lake in Ospizio Bernina, which were all being used as part of the Steam Snowplough running day.

90043 and 90049 were captured on the outskirts of Docker, Cumbria at lunchtime on the 11/11/17 working 4M27 from Coatbridge to Daventry. Please note that this shot was made possible as a result of the train being retimed to run 2.5hrs later as a result of engineering work in Scotland.

Here we see MRCE loco 189923 (front) and 186286 (rear) pass through Langkampfen just as the sun came out to play and the fog began to lift above the valley floor on the 9/2/18. The pair of loco's were working an intermodal freight towards Worgl and beyond.

Waterloo Tube Station - Bakerloo Platforms

UPDATE DEC 2011 - #42 on Explore for 21.12.2011 - thank you very much everybody for my 3rd explore in a row! :-) Merry Christmas!

Carrying on with my London Underground theme but a little different this time. Really wanted to capture the curve of the platoform here and also as it was so quiet with just one passeneger still left walking up platform.

I was fairly happy with this photo however as I had the camera set on spot focus the Waterloo Underground sign is just slightly out of focus, sadly this was not what I was trying to achieve but I feel it has come out alright in the end, I just need to remember check settings first :-).

Information

The first underground station at Waterloo was opened on 8 August 1898 by the Waterloo & City Railway (W&CR), a subsidiary of the owners of the main line station, the London and South Western Railway (L&SWR). The W&CR, nicknamed "the Drain" achieved in a limited way the L&SWR's original plan of taking its tracks the short distance north-east into the City of London.

On 10 March 1906, the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway (BS&WR, now the Bakerloo line) was opened. On 13 September 1926, the extension of the Hampstead & Highgate line (as the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line was then known) was opened from Embankment to the existing City & South London Railway station Kennington with a new station at Waterloo.

As a subsidiary of the L&SWR and its successor the Southern Railway, the W&CR was not a part of the London Underground system. Following nationalization of the main line railway companies in 1948, it became part of British Railways (later British Rail). Following a period of closure during 1993 when the line was converted to use the four rail electrical system of the London Underground, the ownership of Waterloo & City line was transferred to the Underground on 1 April 1994. Due to an Easter shut-down, the first London Underground service on the line was on 5 April 1994.

On 24 September 1999, the Jubilee line station was opened as part of the Jubilee Line Extension. The station was temporarily the western terminus of the extension running from Stratford in east London, before the final section to link the extension to the original line was opened between Waterloo and Green Park on 20 November 1999. The Jubilee platforms are at the opposite end of the site from those of the Bakerloo and Northern lines, but the two ends are connected by a 140-metre (460 ft) moving walkway link (one of only two on the Underground - the other gives access to the Waterloo & City line platform at Bank station).

Here we see RABe units 525019 (rear) and 535118 (front) working what I believe to have been the 08:39 service from Bern to Zweisimmen via Spiez on the morning of the 23/8/17. The train was captured in Boltigen, which was a new spot for me at the time.

At the Triaj B Palas yard in Constanța stands locomotive 60-1537, part of Romania’s long-lived Class 60. Built under license with the classic Sulzer 12LDA28 diesel engine, these six-axle locomotives have been the backbone of heavy freight and passenger services for decades.

Now operated by Grup Feroviar Român (GFR) and registered to GFR Hellas, this machine continues the workhorse tradition on the Black Sea lines. The rugged frame, Co-Co configuration, and characteristic sound of the Sulzer prime mover embody the enduring power of Romanian diesel traction.

From the cab, a driver leans into the light — a reminder that behind every engine’s performance is the hand of the railwayman, guiding steel and horsepower through the network.

The last day of a 22 day winter adventure to the Alps for the 2018-2019 winter season took place on the 25/2/19. The final shot of the trip was of RhB Ge4/4ii locomotive 616 captured passing through Zernez working R1945 from Scoul-Tarasp to Pontresina on the afternoon of the 25/2/19.

With sunny conditions forecasted, it was time to cross the border from Austria to Italy. Unfortunately, the town and surrounding area of Mezzocorona and Trento was filled with human induced air pollution, which blocked the sun's rays and with little wind, the air pollution could not disperse.

Anyway, a slight breeze did pick-up from 13:00, which lifted some of the air pollution enabling some photography to be done. Here we see Rail Traction Group / Lokomotion engine EU43-001 rounding the curve in Mezzocorona on the afternoon of the 20/2/23 with a mixed freight enroute towards Trento and beyond.
