I have a serious problem with Cardinals - whenever I see one I am compelled to take a picture of them. The usual scenario is this: I'm in the middle of tracking another bird that I've been following for countless minutes, waiting for it to show itself. Then along comes this beautiful Cardinal to distract me and it works. Of course as soon as I go to shoot the Cardinal the other bird comes out in the open for a second and naturally I miss the shot. I'm sure the Cardinal knows exactly what it is doing - just look at that expression on his face.

Even in broad daylight abandoned vessels give me the willies. I was able to overcome my fear long enough to capture a few images of the ominous hulk of the ghost ship Joker in Willapa Harbor. While I was there I was sure that the slippery dock was going to send me tumbling into the dark waters by the ruined hull or that the mooring lines would coil around me like the filaments of spider web.

Abandoned vessels are a problem in the waterways of Washington state. Michael A. Schueler described the situation in his article 'A Sinking Feeling: The Problem of Abandoned Boats in Washington Waterways." Seattle Journal of Environmental Law Vol. 4 : Iss. 1, Article 8. Available at: digitalcommons.law.seattleu.edu/sjel/vol4/iss1/8

Schueler wrote:

In 2012, the Deep Sea, a 128-foot vessel known to be derelict, was moved to Penn Cove, Washington, and left to rot near vulnerable oyster beds.

After a few days, the Deep Sea caught fire and sunk, causing significant damage to local wildlife and the local economy, and costing the state millions to cleanup.

The Deep Sea is one of hundreds of boats that have been abandoned in Washington waters and though the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is making some progress in removing derelict and abandoned boats from Washington’s waterways, the progress is slow and cannot keep up with the need, due in no small part to the amount of abandoned boats and the Department’s budget constraints.

Between 2012 and 2014 there has continuously been over one

hundred boats left abandoned or derelict in Washington waters. Should any of these boats sink, these vessels all pose significant environmental risks, due to contaminants commonly found on ships, including excess fuel, lead paint, and asbestos.

Between January 2012 and November 2012, the state removed 23 of the 226 vessels listed on the DNR’s list of abandoned and derelict vessels. In this same time period, however, 18 vessels were added to the DNR’s list. As of publication, 153 vessels are still on the DNR’s list, including numerous ships over 100 feet in length.

The DNR’s Derelict Vessel Removal Program operates on a scant $750,000 budget each year.

Dismantling even one large vessel can cost more than the entire budget. Small fishing ships, among the cheapest of vessels to remove, can still cost between $5,000 and $10,0005 to remove, with one recently costing $7,600 in Gig Harbor.

Assuming each boat’s removal cost is as little as $7,600, the DNR would be able to remove less than 100 vessels a year—less than two-thirds of the currently maintained list of derelict and abandoned ships. However, many abandoned or derelict ships in Washington that are far larger than small fishing vessels and are far costlier remove. Compounding this problem further, many boats removed from the list end up back on the list for a second or third time.

With this budgetary limitation, the DNR will be unable to remove

the existing boats this season, or keep up with the ships added to the list this year, digging the state into a deeper hole and adding additional liability to Washington's economy and environment.

Many of the ships on the DNR’s list are “large vessels” containing

pollutants that can cause significant environmental damage and require significant funding to properly cleanup.

During a flyover of the Columbia River to look into the growing problem of abandoned and derelict vessels, then Governors Gregoire of Washington and Kitzhaber of Oregon noted approximately 40 vessels on the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon.

Of these vessels at least half fall into the category of large ships, “between 100 and 181 feet long.” One of these vessels, the LST-1166 is 373 feet long and would likely require “legislative action” to remove.

Many of these boats contain large amounts of fuel and other environmental pollutants including PCBs, copper wiring, lead paint and asbestos insulation. These pollutants can

cause significant environmental damage if released into the environment and also can cost the state millions in cleanup costs.

For example, the cleanup of the Crocket in 2011 cost the state nearly $24 million in removal and cleanup costs when it was broken apart.

Given its current budget constraints, Washington cannot endure cleanup costs similar to this, especially considering that there may be 20 or more ships that could cost this much. There will likely be more boats abandoned in the coming year as the recession continues, increasing the likelihood of further environmental damage.

As more and more of these ships continue to fall into derelict status and are abandoned, Washington takes a huge gamble in letting these ships sink. Each large ship left unattended could cost the state tens of millions of dollars and poses significant environmental risks to local waterways and wildlife should the vessel sink.

The motorists stopped by this train should accept the fact that the old man isn't going to listen to any complaints!

ILIAN AND HIO ARE HERE!!!!

PS: ILIAN POSE BY Hio Taringa

Major line problems on the metro today between Monument and South Shields, meant we had some of our buses out on Metro Replacement. Vehicles we put on were 215 216 225 and 201.

“Wowsers, Sky, what have you been up to? You look shattered.” Asked Bertie as he watched his friend still struggling with a jar of honey.

“I’ve been trying to sort out a problem we have, Bertie. At the moment the problem is winning.”

“Is it anything to do with that jar of honey, and all these tools, Sky?”

“It is all to do with these tools and this jar of honey, plus all the other jars of honey we have in hiding.”

“I borrowed some from Posh rather than start my own honey this morning. I think it was older and I didn’t want his jars to go out of date and then him have to throw it away.”

“That is very good of you, Bertie, to think about Posh’s honey and how bad he would feel having to throw some away. It does not, however, help me to solve this problem any more than all these tools have done.”

“Hello, Bertie, Sky, looks like the man is going to use his picture taking thingy again. What are you doing, Sky?” Asked Posh as he joined his friends sitting down beside them.

“We have a problem, Posh. The people the man buys his groceries from have either changed or they have changed the honey they are supplying. The problem is that I can’t seem to get the top off the jars. I have tried three or it could have been two, I’m not that good at counting, but I do know that I couldn’t get to the honey.”

“I see, yes, it is a different size jar, I can see that. Have you tried the thing that wraps around the top of the jar and sometimes opens it?”

“Of course, it didn’t help. You try and see if you can move it, Posh. You are bigger and stronger than me so you might be able to open it.”

“Very well, you hold onto the jar, Sky, and I’ll try and remove the lid.” Said Posh Bear as he grasped the lid and tried to turn it.

“No, sorry Sky, I can’t move it. We’ll have to come up with another way to open the jar.” Said Posh.

“Can I try, Sky, I might be able to open it for you?” Asked Bertie.

“If Posh can’t open it then I don’t think you’ll be able to, Bertie. I could ask Buttons to open it but he wants to have half the jar every time he opens one.” Said Sky scratching his head with his paw.

“Well, tell him he can’t have half the jar after he has opened it, Sky. Just say that it is wrong to take advantage like that.” Said Bertie trying not to grin.

“Bertie, have you seen the size of that bear? If he says Easter is in December this year, I’m not telling him it isn’t. He is a bit of a grump at any time and anyway, it wouldn’t improve his mood telling him he couldn’t have some honey.” Said Sky now looking desperate.

“Are you sure I can’t try and open it for you, Sky? I wouldn’t want half a jar in payment.” Said Bertie softly.

“I know, Bertie and thank you for your kind offer but I honestly feel that if Posh has tried and I have tried, and failed, then it is going to take someone extra strong to get this open. I wonder if the shop we get our honey from sells a honey jar opener. Maybe that is the answer.” Said Sky slightly brightening up at the idea.

“That would be good long term, Sky, but that won’t help you right now.” Said Posh Bear.

“Thanks Posh, that has really cheered me up. Which school did you go to, to learn such tact and diplomacy? Here comes the man and he is ready for the picture I think.” Said Sky trying to smile and failing.

The photograph taken the bears waited until the man began clear things away before they too started to move. Bertie picked up the jar of honey in his paws, placed it between his leg paws and gripped it tightly then took hold of the lid and twisted. There was a slight hiss, and the lid came off.

“Sky, you need to be careful when you take your jar of honey back as the lid is off.” He said smugly.

“But how, what did you do, how did that…? Stammered Sky.

“It was easy, you just need the knack. Let us go back to your stock and then I’ll show you how it is done on two more jars, one for Posh and the other for me.”

“But, but two jars?” Asked Sky in astonishment.

“Yes, Sky, I think it is about time you began sharing like the rest of us. It is the only way you are going to get any more honey.” Said Bertie firmly.

“I’m going to really enjoy this jar of honey.” Said Posh bear smiling. “A jar of Sky’s honey, that is a first!”

First World problems...

My poor Pistache had an ultrasound yesterday. She keeps vomiting and losing weight (2.6 kg now). The vet feared a cancerous tumour, but all she saw was a thickening of the gallbladder wall. You can't totally exclude cancer, but a biopsy would be needed, and apart from being certain, it wouldn't help.

Hoping it's just a microbial problem she has antibiotics to take for 20 days. Normally she should also eat special dry food that I'll get on Monday, but I don't really believe that she will eat it.

I hope my baby will be better soon and that we will celebrate her 17th birthday in September.

Having left the imperial facility on Ilum, we decided to return to Coruscant to simply relax for a bit and wait for Frons' arm to fully recover and give Charla some time to rest. The twins decided to accompany us as their transport had left them stranded on Ilum and we had gotten along with them pretty well.

Well, we made it to Coruscant without any larger problems and found some decent lodging for the 9 of us. After that we all went about our business; Kas and Vase played Sabacc, Veto went to go search for the nearest bar, and the rest of us relaxed and got some rest.

A couple of minutes later a droid arrived at the doorstep of our current residence which presented itself as H-24, a messenger droid with some important information for us. He handed me a small data chip and as quick as it had come, the droid was gone.

Braik took a quick look at the chip, confirming it was neither a secret explosive nor a hostile virus.

We plugged it into Vase's computer and accessed the one file stored on the chip - a simple audio clip. Without hesitation, I played the clip.

Immediately, a disembodied female voice begin speaking to us through the computer's speakers;

"Greetings, My name is Lagra Romlow. I heard your little band was in the region, and coincidentally I happen to be in need of the services of a bounty hunter. There is an underground imperial prison on Kashyyyk under these coordinates:

41°24'12.2"N 2°10'26.5"E. There is a prisoner in cell 42 on level 3 that I need kidnapped and returned to Coruscant. The person you're looking for is a female Keshiri in her early twenties. I regret to inform you that I can not equip you with more information at this time, however I can assure you that if you choose to accept this mission you shall be justly rewarded. Knowing bounty hunters, this isn't enough to convince you to join, so if you enter the following code in the intersystems bank network you'll find a number of credits already waiting for you: 5GD04KL38."

I signalled to Vase to enter the code into the network. Once he had entered the network and used the code, we were granted access to a high security account with some very pleasing numbers on it.

"Should you chose to accept this job, I shall be more than obliged to triple this number. I'm sorry, I can not supply you with more information. End transmission."

I looked at Vase.

"Well, I don't usually like taking jobs from unknown people, but that number is very convincing."

"Welp, if it turns out to be a scam, we can always just track the droid back to the owner and give them a talking too"

I looked at Vase's tracking computer, which was blinking with a soft blue light.

"You planted a tracker on that thing, didn't you?"

He just raised an eyebrow and smirked.

I sighed.

"Eh, I was never one for relaxing anyways. Call in Vase, we've got a job to do. And bring the twins too, they can fill in for Frons and Charla while they recuperate . They won't protest once you show them that account"

We reached Kashyyyk and followed the coordinates to a small clearing in a forest of towering trees. In the middle of the clearing was a small hatch. The plan was fairly simple: Braik had brought with him all the equipment we would need for a quick heist, or in this case a breakout. Among the equipment was a laser drill and grappling line and spool. After entering the prison, Braik and I would slide down the line equipped with the drill to level 3 and break out the prisoner, with Veto holding the grappling spool and the twins providing us with some extra protection. Kas would stay in the clearing and alert us if any reinforcements were on their way.

We broke into the prison after a brief fire fight with the guards and prepared for our descent to level 3. As far as we could tell, no alarms had been triggered and no one knew of our presence. Kas stayed behind, Veto grabbed the spool, and the rest of us slid down to level 3. Or at least, what we thought was level 3.

After a quick search of the containment cells, we found cell 42 and prepared for the extraction. Braik calibrated the drill and the twins took up defensive positions and I took to work on disengaging the alarm. After a couple of tense, quiet minutes, I was able to disable the alarm and Braik informed me that the drill was ready.

We grabbed the drill and began slowly moving it in a circle around the door of the cell. Once we completed the circle, we took a deep breath and pushed the door in. What met our eyes was certainly not a female Keshiri.

"Wassa youa doin?" asked the confused Gungan.

"What the heck...," I muttered under my breath.

Braik accessed the information panel next to the cell.

"Kidool Depels," he read. "He was charged with first degree murder and treason to the empire for a successful assassination attempt on an imperial senator."

"Oh yeah?" I asked. "How did he do that?"

"He poisoned the senator's meal. This guy was a chef for 6 years before being imprisoned."

I glanced at the Gungan. "Nice" I said.

He was too busy slobbering to notice.

"Markus," said Braik. "There isn't enough juice in this thing for another extraction. This is it, we had one shot to get this gal out and we're stuck with a Gungan instead."

"I don't get it," I said. "We're on level 3 and this is cell 42, where did we go wrong?"

"Thisa not level tree" said the Gungan.

I looked down over the edge of the catwalk.

"I know you Gungans aren't big on brains, but I'm pretty sure we're on the 3rd level."

"No, yousa under da ground man. Yousa count lavals begging from tha top."

I glanced at Braik who was pounding his head against into the wall.

"Well, I'm not leaving this place without the prisoner. Come on Braik, we're going down another level."

Braik lifted his head. "I already told you Markus, we can't use the drill for another extraction - it just doesn't have enough power."

"I'll think of something." I said.

"When you 'think of something,' it usually involves a lot of explosives, and I thought we weren't trying to alert the garrison stationed here?"

"Whatever, this was getting boring anyway," I said, grabbing onto the line and sliding down to level 3 (the real one this time).

Braik followed me next, then the twins, confusion evident on their faces.

I found cell 42 and reached into my coat. I brought out a thermal detonator and Without hesitation tossed it at the door. It exploded outward, showering the catwalk in dust.

Out of the cell stepped a female Keshiri wearing a pair of electro-cuffs.

Braik read from the information panel near the cell; "Lagra Romlow, imprisoned for multiple crimes, including theft, plagiarism, and dealing in illegal arms and drugs."

"You hired us to rescue yourself? Clever, I like it," I said.

"No time for chit-chat Markus," said Bren. "The first guards have arrived."

Sure enough, 2 prison guards had appeared on the level below us and began raining shots on our little party.

"Keep them distracted," I told Bren and Krista. "We'll get the girl out first, follow us once we're done."

After a quick nod from Bren, I gestured for Lagra to grab the line and signalled Veto to lift us out.

The twins made quick work of the guards and followed us moments later.

"Whasa you doin?" asked the Gungan. "Don leave mesa! They thinka I with yousa!"

"Then grab on," I told the Gungan. "We could use a good chef, another day of Charla's cooking might kill me."

After a few seconds of thought, I glanced at the Gungan. "Don't tell her I said that"

The Gungan just stood there, empty-headed. It didn't occur to me that he had no idea what I was talking about.

"Just grab the heck on." I told him.

He happily obliged, and we exited the prison safe and sound.

Once we exited the prison we were met by Kas who had a concerned look on his face.

"I intercepted a signal for reinforcements just now, they'll be here shortly. I was just about to tell you when you came out."

"Then let's get out of here," I said. "Our work here is done"

Built for Brickanics' contest over on YouTube. Due to the fact that vacation is coming to an end, I decided I didn't want to start any larger/longer projects, but I did want to enter this contest as well as just build another Star Wars MOC. The result: The breakout, a small SW MOC for the Dark Times RPG built in less than 2 days.

Feedback is always appreciated,

On Wednesday 14th June 2023 I spent the day on the MGB line between Dieni and Disentis in splendid Alpine weather. However, I had to content myself with the hourly Regio services as all of the Zermatt Glacier Express services had been cancelled that day following an OHL problem near the Valais mountain resort town.

The new Orion EMUs would be officially 'launched' by MGB on the following day at an event at Oberalppass, so at least the services operating on this section of the network were still loco hauled. In this view, refurbished MGB HGe 4/4” 104 was crossing Bugei Viaduct with an Andermatt to Disentis/Mustér R45 Service.

No puedo juzgarte, no te conozco.

I wanted to state that this is not my house; although I wish it were. When we were kicking around the idea to move to Massachusetts, we flew out during Thanksgiving week to make sure we wanted Massachusetts to become our new home. I had been drooling over this house on a real estate website so we decided to drive out and take a look during an open house. First of all, the house is PINK! I loved the idea of living in a pink house. This house felt so right to me; the owner was selling because his girlfriend (I don't think they were married) had passed away and I believe he wanted to get away and start over. She was an artist and the walls were covered with her art. I will confess, I teared up when I walked inside. It was built in the late 1800's and had charm oozing out of its walls. We weren't in the position to buy at that time (we still had a house in Seattle to sell), but I'll never forget this house. So glad I took photos that day.

I had problems with the focus with this lens but have seem to have it resolved but too late to get any other good photos today. No wonder I like manual focus.
