A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Trees in winter

With the arrival of winter, and often at the end of autumn, a new problem arises with trees. This specific "winter" problem is associated with the accumulation of wet snow and the formation of frost on the branches and trunks of trees. "Freezing rains" - phenomena occur under certain combinations of weather conditions: sleet, wind, fog, sudden changes in temperature with a "transition through 0 degrees". Such a significant load on the branches and trunks of trees can lead to emergency situations:

1. Breaking off and collapse of large branches. Typical for poplar, aspen, willow, linden, oak. To a lesser extent for pines and elms.

2. Breaking the forks of co-dominant trunks. Most often found in the above tree species with V-shaped forks. Less typical for U-shaped forks of birch and spruce.

3. Bending under the weight of snow and ice, with possible breaking of the trunks of inclined trees.

I found the trees without obvious problems :)

Medium-sized songbird that produces one of eastern Australia’s most familiar rainforest calls. Olive brown above, with white throat patch contrasting strongly with black face, crest, and breast. Juvenile lacks white patch. Feeds on the ground, most commonly in dense vegetation of rainforest and other wet forests. Very vocal. Male sings “oooooo...doo-doo-doo–whipp!” and female responds “pew pew.” (eBird)

Heard frequently in rainforests of eastern Australia, we quickly learned the song. At O'Reilly's, they are very tame and would come to people for food. In fact, a few times they were too close to photograph, even with the 100-400mm lens. The main problem is that they love the deepest, darkest parts of the forest, so very noisy and dark originals. This photo has been significantly edited to bring out the bird from the gloom.

JR Ooito Line (JR大糸線) is a local railway line that connects Itoigawa on the Japan Sea coast and Matsumoto in Nagano prefecture 105km to the south, which is served by JR Chuou Line that leads to Tokyo and Nagoya.

Matsumoto - Oomachi section was easily completed in 1915, Oomachii - Otari section in 1935, and Otari- Itoigawa section finally in 1957. It is laid out on flat alluvial lands along the rivers from Matsumoto to Oomachi, and Oomachi to Hakuba, but the flat land suddenly disappears in Otari village.

This photo was taken in Chikuni community in the southernmost part of Otari. A photo taken at the same location in winter is already uploaded to flickr.

There are numerous railroad bridges and tunnels in Hakuba - Itoigawa section and, according to a website, this section of Ooito Line is like a real Big Thunder Mountain!

Heavy snowfall in winter is another big problem for a single track railway line in red ink.

I had an impression that the bridge was too low. The same concern seems to be shared by the railway company as there are red and yellow marks on a bridge support.

With the temperature around minus six celsius, 'Delivering for our Key Workers' with the 6M94 Margam - Corby steel coils.

Luckily the train was running two hours late, due to operational problems at Leicester.

Worse was to come, as a points failure on the steel works branch junction meant another lengthy delay. Eventual arrival was 366 minutes late.

Best viewed 'large'.

This lovely location is 20 minutes from home. The conditions meant it took me nearly an hour to get there, and I saw it as never before in 13 years of visits! I'd come for a stone train, arriving about half an hour before it was due. However, a hoot indicated a train very close - the steel was running two hours late! So I moved around a fair bit for a few minutes taking various compositions at different focal lengths without the train, then repeated them so that I could pick the best combination and photoshop the train in. Also, the sky was just plain blue so I added some clouds.

♥ Intro ♥

The Kribik is a gentle, and loyal creature, best suited as a companion. It has a positive, playful demeanor, and grows to like people very fast. It is slightly timid at first, but after it examines you a few times, it will learn to love everyone around. They feed off of blades of grass, careful not to hurt/eat any creatures crawling around inside of it. The Kribik were domesticated by humans to keep children, and other humans company along their travels, and at home. They are highly social, so will interact, and seek out other creatures to play with. They prefer to be kept in groups of two or more, if there aren't a lot of humans around. Due to their small, fragile frame, they are not used as mounts, but will happily hop beside you as a companion.

- Multiple texture options.

♥ How to use ♥

!!!!! WHEN MAKING A NEW PET, REZ IT FROM YOUR INVENTORY. DONT DRAG AND COPY IN-WORLD

Simply rez out your pet object from your inventory. Make sure there are not too many obstacles in the way, as it is still a SL creature, and can bump into items. They like a bit of space. Make sure the pet is positioned above the ground that you want it to wander on.

- Wandering:

Click in the Pet. (if you are having problems touching it, right click on the pet, and select touch from the menu). A dialog menu should pop up. Select radius from the menu, and type in a number from 1-30 meters. This is how far your pet will wander from the starting point. Make sure your creature is positioned around where you want it to wander within, and click on it again. Click on wander. It will start to walk around, and emote. This is where it interacts with people/items/pets in its territory.

-Wearing:

To wear your pet as a mount/pet, pick it up into your inventory. Right click on the creature->add.

-Riding:

To ride this creature as a vehicle with other people IF IT IS RIDEABLE, Make sure it is rezzed on the ground. Right click on it, and select "Ride". If the creature likes you, or you have access permissions, it will let you steer it. To speed up, double tap the fwd arrow. To slow down, press the fwd and back arrow at the same time. Due to physics limitations, if you are stuck after a jump, simply release the fwd arrow, and press it again to keep moving.

The ONE exception to this rule, is that it will NOT let people it doesn't like ride it, and they will have to be accompanied by someone it does trust if enough seats are available.

-Following:

Your creature can follow anyone close to it. Simply click on the pet, select follow from the menu, and click on the person you want it to follow.

After photographing a lime, a grape, and finally this tiny plant, I think true green might be rare in a backlighted photo of nature.* This belly shot of a wee plant looked as close as I could find to green, but with the backlight the green appears yellow. That backlight might be my problem, if I had a problem.

But I'm drawn to backlight with bokeh balls and frost.

*Depending on the angle of light, of course.

Thanks for looking.

It's time for "Grab-a-Box" week once again. This time I reached in deep and pulled out a yellow box about half filled. That means I might have pulled the good stuff out for show or scanned already a long time ago leaving the second class product in the box. After some help from a friend I put the puzzle together of what was left. It appears to be two days of photos, April 25 and 26 of 1992. I was probably visiting my father in Norwich, NY and probably included the D&H/CP tracks it my travels.

I remeber this chase of D&H/CPR #554 being a hectic high paced run. Three "Bigs" attack the east side of Belden Hill with ease as they race out of Haurpersville, NY. I'll have to use I88 to jump ahead, even over the hill as my "MLW Monday" submission disappears into the hills!

It is a real problem, is it not? How can we come to an understanding of this utterly diverse and complicated world whilst sitting in the particularity of our home? It is true that the media, from newspapers to TV and social media, offer us a daily digest of selected information. We would, I sincerely hope, critically examine these news and think for ourselves. However, even so, we would have to deal with the selective nature of the information. We never see "the whole picture". Our knowledge, even at the best of times, is necessarily fragmentary. It is absolutely important to be aware of this limitation - it is one of the virtues that make us human.

I am saying this because AI is on the march. AI has never ever left its ivory tower, it never "left home". It never made any experiences. AI has not seen anything. It does not know how to suffer. What it does is to harvest and (often illegally) exploit printed or published materials, information it has neither created nor even collected. It does not know what it does not know. And yet AI will come up with explanations and scenarios that are untroubled by any kind of self-doubt. AI does not know when it is peddling false information. AI will interpret the world whilst staying at its "home" and will not even be aware of it. Leica M8 plus Voigtlaender 35/1.4 at approx. F8.

There are no magic answers, no miraculous methods to overcome the problems we face, just the familiar ones: honest search for understanding, education, organization, action that raises the cost of state violence for its perpetrators or that lays the basis for institutional change -- and the kind of commitment that will persist despite the temptations of disillusionment, despite many failures and only limited successes, inspired by the hope of a brighter future."

99 problems, but a bitch ain't one...

(There's a problem with this one not showing on the Flickr feed - again! Thought they had solved it but apparently its back)

These tiny blue beauties really are very small, similar to, but smaller than forget-me-nots.

It's a very interesting plant the Brunnera, grown mainly for its exotic ground cover, almost succulent foliage. It has.largish, ornate leaves and wehn they begin to show again after winter it also sends out these lovely little flowers. This variety is called 'Jack Frost' .

I'll paste a photo of the foliage in the comments below so you can see......

As I turned, the world around me altered abruptly; vehicles, buildings and the people that operated and maintained them became transparent, and somehow time itself seemed to speed up. The ghostly remains of once tangible people flittered before my eyes, leaving behind them faint echoes that slowly faded into nothingness. That which was corporeal now appeared as if rendered in spirit. I thought at once of the charlatan, Crowley, and his Magick, but quickly dismissed the notion that such a man could bear any relationship with the truth now being revealed before my eyes: that reality was not as it seemed.

Turning further, my eyes alighted on the man. His left arm, raised in an almost defensive posture, was encased in some kind of satanic machine. I could see little wisps of steam rising from the elbow joint and a subtle orange glow that hinted at the incredible furnace that must lurk somewhere within. Only God knows what strange powers might be required to build such a device; as advanced as our science was at that time, it seemed to me inadequate for such artifice. I had, however, no doubt that this machine was the cause of my abstraction from the material plane and that this man must be confronted, before all that we held dear became lost.

I composed myself, stood tall, and approached the man.

“Hello,” he said. “My name’s Barry.”

Twelve hand-held exposures representing thirty seconds of March 26th, 2019. Shot at the Victorian Brickworks Museum, Bursledon.

NB. You’ll no doubt be pleased to learn that Barry holds no sinister plans concerning the ultimate fate of the universe; he is, in fact, a cake designer.

Usual caveats etc.

And fences too.

I'm sorry that I have been a bit spasmodic with both my posting and my visiting over the last couple of weeks. We've been having some remedial work done on our sitting room to rectify problems with damp and so we're a bit upside down! Hopefully we should be able to move back into the room over the weekend....

So with a bit of 'luck' and a following wind things should improve re my time on Flickr (and taking photos)!

Wishing all a HFF and a great weekend.
