1949 Leyland Titan PD2/3 chassis with Leyland H30/26R bus body and originally with a Leyland 7.4 litre E181 6-cylinder diesel engine but now with a replacement but I don't know what. At the South East Bus Festival, Detling, 11 April 2026. Registration KLB915, London Transport Fleet No.RTW185.

The Leyland Titan was built in 1927-42 and 1945-69 and was much developed over the years. It was exported in quantity and also built in India by Ashok. The pre-war models were the TD1-8 (initially petrol engines, diesel from 1939) built from 1927 until 1942. Post war, production restarted in 1945 with virtually a new design and continued until as late as 1969 with continuous improvements (though all with improved diesel engines): PD1, PD2 and PD3 with a plethora of sub-marks and different bodies. Export versions were OPD1, 2 & 3.

Moreover, a specific version of the PD2/3 was produced for London. The AEC Reliance III RT became the standard London Transport double-decker of the 1950's and 1960's, 4,825 being built. However, LT needed more such buses quickly. They thus ordered from Leyland, the biggest bus manufacturer in the UK, a large number of Leyland's most popular product, the Titan, but adapted for London conditions.Thus Leyland built their version of what LT classed as the RT and had bodies of Leyland manufacture but identical to the design of the Park Royal bodies of the Reliance III RT; however, Leyland engines were fitted rather than AEC ones. These Titans were included in the same RT class as the Reliances by LT. The London Titan was produced in RTW (wide) and SRT (short) varieties. 2,131 were produced, a massive number by the standards of provincial operators but something of a minority to the AEC product and always regarded as somewhat non-standard by LT.

This smart Titan PD2 was the first numerically in a batch of three, 39-41, supplied new to the small Lancashire municipal in 04/1968. It passed to Borough of Blackburn Transport, along with the remaining buses in the Darwen fleet, when the undertaking was merged with its larger neighbour on 01/04/1974 under local government reorganisation. It is seen here on display at the Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust's Morecambe Rally & Running Day, who's main base for the day was the Mazuma Stadium, home of Morecambe FC, on 22/05/2022. © Peter Steel 2022.

Preserved 1951 Leyland Titan PD2 Double Decker Bus RTL1076 LUC253 as operated by the London Bus Company on display outside North Weald Station on the heritage Epping Ongar Railway (EOR) in Essex (UK).

LUC253 amongst other heritage London Bus Company buses operate the route 339 shuttle service between the Epping Ongar Railway at North Weald with Epping underground and Shenfield mainline Stations.

wish the quality was better, but nevertheless a very interesting shot of two elderly vehicles outside the Summit Inn. The Guy is bound for Ashton on service 00 .. which was the short workings of the 9 route at peak hours. The PD2 is bound for Manchester on LIMITED STOP service 24.

VB-4. Although the theme of London Bus Museum’s 2014 Spring Gathering was a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the RTs, there were also some other interesting visiting buses including this 1962 Stockport Corporation Leyland PD2.

Like many of the RTs and other buses, it did a stint on route 462, the shuttle service connecting the Brooklands Museum with Weybridge Railway Station and the Town Centre.

The London Bus Museum is now located at the Brooklands Museum near Weybridge in Surrey.
