This preserved former Ulster Transport Authority Leyland PD2 lowbridge double decker is seen here outside Stormont buildings, Belfast. It carries UTA fleet number 927 and is reg number MZ 7789

Leyland Titan PD2 3250, TNA520 from the Manchester Museum of Transport is pictured pulling out of Boyle Street alongside Go North West’s Queens Road Depot whilst working one of the heritage bus services

The bus I used to get to school. Edinburgh Leyland Titan PD2 507 (LWS507) approaches George Street after the long haul up from Canonmills, on service 23, in 1974. This was only a few weeks before these buses were displaced by AN68s on this service. The bus has some time in its 18 year career suffered front dome damage sufficient to lead to it having its glazing replaced with fixed units instead of the factory-fitted hopper vented examples. It shares the road with an Austin Maxi, a Land Rover and a Commer van, as well as exotic fare in the shape of an American sedan more often seen on the hills of San Fransisco than of Edinburgh.

If you view large, you will see in the distance straight ahead the smooth green patch which is George Heriot's School's Goldenacre playing fields. To the left of these is a clump of trees, then a road and the more trees - these last being in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Beyond all the buildings is the Firth of Forth and then the hills of Fife.

I looked at this same view on Google Streetview and was struck by how much busier the scene is there than on this 35 year old slide.

Halifax Joint Omnibus Committee: 245 (PJX 245) a Weymann bodied Leyland Titan PD2/37, painted in green, cream and orange livery and captured in Halifax operating on service 22. It is captured passing identical vehicle 246 (PJX 246) operating on service 39.

These vehicles were captured here just over a week before the Halifax Joint Omnibus Committee became part of West Yorkshire PTE on 1st April 1974.

Ebony's current face with lips, blush and eyes, but I am not feeling the lips I may start over. I am getting better, but being the perfectionist I am on crafty things I am having a bit of an issue. Soon soon. Also have to do more eyeshadow.

Almost but not quite - I've made a couple of tweaks to this image hence the 'digital representation' tag. YUP 6 is, of course, Weardale Motor Services superbly restored Leyland PD2 double-decker; or Leyland PS1 if you prefer, since this old-timer began life as ACB-bodied coach KUP 435.

The tweaks mentioned above are the replacement of the WMS fleetname with historically correct SMS (Stanhope Motor Services) lettering; and the addition of a front bumper - originally carried to satisfy legal requirements regarding overall dimensions. YUP 6 was always a Stanhope Motor Services vehicle (with SMS lettering on the standard WMS livery) until that company was wound-up.

It has lead something of a charmed life, spared from conversion to a tow truck in the early 1980s, superficially restored in 1988 and subsequently left to decay. Salvation came with a tow to Gardiners of Spennymoor in 2006 for a long and very thorough restoration. The end result is absolutely fantastic - a credit to Gardiners, Weardale and everybody involved in its restoration. This view was taken during a specially posed session at the 2011 Gateshead Metro Centre Rally. Thanks to Chris Adams, WMS Operations Manager, for arranging it (22-May-11).

Life expired ex Blackpool Corporation, MCCW bodied Leyland PD2, NFV327, awaits an end to its lingering demise at the back of Berresfords yard, Cheddleton in May 1981. The bus had been new to Blackpool in 1958.

Parked in Bretonside Bus Station, Plymouth is 358 (MCO 658), an open top Leyland PD2 with Metro Cammell body, "Sir Francis Drake". Alongside in the shortlived Crimson and Cream livery is 203 (DDR 203D), a Metro Cammell bodied Leyland Atlantean.

Southdown appeared to favour Leyland chassis for double deck vehicles up to the introduction of Bristol VRTs in the early 1970s. Above is Southdown 772 (OCD772) a Leyland PD2/Park Royal with blinds for Southsea Garage. These buses could also be found further east, even making appearances on the long 122 service (joint with M&D) between Brighton, Tunbridge Wells and Gravesend. The bus is seen at Amberley in September 1990

A pencil note says its LWS 532, one of Edinburgh's famous - or infamous - Leylands. It looks as if its having a big upper deck, front dome rebuild.

This view represents a vehicle that not only served in the Hartlepool fleet for many years, but which survives in preservation. Roe-bodied Leyland PD2 BEF 28C (fleet number 28) was one of a pair delivered in 1965 but looks older by virtue of its exposed radiator, a feature that had become increasingly uncommon by that time. Hartlepool's sole concession to modern trends (as far as double-deckers were concerned) was to fit platform doors to some of its PD2s - no doubt greatly appreciated on the exposed coastal road to Seaton Carew. These were the company's last double-deckers, with the fleet progressively becoming all single-deck.

One of the PD2s was converted to open-top and number 28 lingered as a training and special event vehicle, ultimately passing to Eastern Scottish for further use as a training vehicle (retaining Hartlepool livery throughout its stay). Nick Larkin bought it for preservation and I came across it at the 1994 Delaine Running Day looking a little worse for wear. This digital representation is based on preserved Lincoln Corporation RFE 416, photographed at Lincoln in 2009 (18-Jan-10)

After running designated turns on part of route 22 last summer, Stagecoach have returned their Devon General liveried Leyland Titan PD2 to service, this time on dedicated route 200 Torquay Strand-Paignton Bus Station, via Paignton Seafront. Unfortunately Torbay Council have decided not to fund the use of Senior Citizen & Disabled Person passes on this service. People with passes do get a reduced, child fare. I assume the council didn't want to help fund a service they might deem to be a 'tour', or a bus that people might want to use specifically because it is an open topper. Whatever the reason it is not only a shame, but to me seems completely illogical. The service runs hourly from 09.30-16.30 from Paignton, 10.00-17.00 from Torquay, with a lunch break at 12.30-13.30. It is in effect running a short 12 working between the two busy towns, buses on the 12 are as usual bunching up, with many journeys being turned short of their intended destination to try and return them to their correct running time; the use of this hourly 200 service could have helped take some of the strain away from routes 12, 22, but given a large number of the people who use services are those who hold a free bus pass not accepted by the 200, many passengers are waiting and condensing onto the 12s, 22s. Yes some people would use the bus just to enjoy the pleasure of riding an old open top bus, but surely this would be a small 'worry' compared to the plus side of being able to help ease the pressure on other services. I've seen scores of people hail the bus, or walk up to the conductor only to find out they have to pay, meaning they wait for the next bus. I'm sure the 4 12s running 10, 20, 30 minutes late behind it will be delighted to watch an almost empty bus pulling away from them as they have to stop and get yet more behind schedule! To add to this stupidity of this a special 200 poster was stuck to most of the bus stops en route a week or so before the route was meant to start, publicising the route. The poster, often placed at the height suitable to be read by a 4 year old, makes no mention of the fact that most passes are not valid. Oops!

A lovely early 1970s view of Halifax Corporation 71, a Weymann bodied Leyland PD2 grinding up Halifax's Great Albion Street. The bus is about to make the left turn into St James Road where the former Halifax bus station can seen to the right of the picture.

71 passed to West Yorkshire PTE on the 1st April 1974, with the rest of the Halifax fleet. Under the ownership of WYPTE, No71 became 3071; the 3xxx series numbering denoting vehicles from the former Halifax fleet.

As for the stone built bus station, that closed in the late 1980s, replaced a more modern facility in the town. Today, an office block stands on the site.

The two-storey building behind the bus was a medical centre. That too has been demolished (c2014), and a new medical centre now stands on the site.
