Leyland Titan PD2/1 BHL860 had a Leyland body with conventional H30/26R layout. It was one of twenty-five built for West Riding between 1948 and 1949. Thirteen had highbridge bodies similar to BHL860 and twelve were of low bridge layout seating 53. No 659 is seen at Marshgate Bus Station in Doncaster where services for Leeds and Pontefract, Wakefield and Askern, Selby and York were to be found.
I particularly like the grandma and small child in this photo, the way they are holding hands and leaning towards each other. I wonder how many people have memories of early childhood which involve a bus journey with a grandparent.
A 1958 built PD2. The people euphemistically called 'planners' didn't do much for the townscape in the 60's and 70s.....
Leyland PD2 ( 7RT ) - Weymann H56R
New to London Transport RTL 500 during March-1950 . Passing in to this fleet during April-1965 . I can't understand why it is carrying an "On Hire to Midland Red" label in its windscreen . As the Harper Brothers fleet did not get taken over by Midland Red , until July 1974 , three months after the date of my shot !
Taken through the front window of the National Travel Coach , I was heading South in
April-1974
I was unsure whether to “crop” this shot , as it was two vehicles passing etc , central to the image is so much else going on . Therefore this just how it came out of my Camera .

KDT562, a Leyland PD2/1 received a 1958 Roe H34/28R body from a withdrawn trolleybus FWX902 in July 1964. Within four months of the rebodying the bus was involved in a collision and sustained considerable nearside side damage. The vehicle was repaired and continued in service until withdrawal in 1970. A1 Service 1951 Leyland PD2 - Leyland NTF9 at Ardrossan on 6/6/75. An unusual livery for this ex Demonstrator Bus.
When a bus operator needed a 'hack' or a specialist vehicle, quite often the first place they looked was the back of the depot. For old buses, especially the traditional front-engined type, were ideal for conversion into a breakdown lorry, trolleybus pole carrier or tower wagon. And a large operator would have a workshop with skilled craftsmen who could do all the work when things were less busy.
Ashton Corporation converted this double-deck Leyland, number 6, into a handy lorry-cum-hack at the end of its service life. It had a small crew compartment just behind the driver's cab, and the rest was a long-flat floor ideal for general carrying jobs.
The red and white plate on the front is a 'Trade Plate' - requirements have tightened up considerably since this photo was taken, but in essence it was a plate that (at that time) a motor company could put on a vehicle that wasn't taxed or licensed.
It was so useful that 'Thunderbird', as it was dubbed, lasted long enough to be painted in SELNEC orange and off-white and eventually donated to the Museum of Transport where she became a very useful source of spare parts - many of its components are still doing a useful job to this day in the museum's buses.
You don't see vehicles of this kind today, partly due to increasing bus complexity but also because these converted buses were at times a 'grey area' and VOSA, the authority that looks after this kind of thing, is less inclined to turn a blind eye to buses that have become lorries but are still licensed as buses...
Thank you to everyone who advised us that the 'Robin Hood' pub behind is nowhere near Ashton but is in fact in Bury, close to the old Bury Corporation bus garage. This leads us to wonder if the photo was taken in the very early days of the new SELNEC PTE.
If you'd like to see the buses that Ashton 6's components went to help, come and see them at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester or go to motgm.uk.

A line-up of mostly PD2/40's with East Lancs bodies dating from 1957-1966 at Widnes Depot on 30/3/75. There seemed to be two ways of painting the rads/mudguards - and the range of number plates is interesting!
Edinburgh Corporation Transport eliminated its trams with batches of Leyland Titan PD2/20s, some 150 of which were procured between 1954- 57. The buses did not meet with overwhelming public approval, one Bailie (councillor) declaring them to be “monstrous masses of shivering tin.” I can endorse that the buses’ Metropolitan-Cammell Orion bodywork was very spartan inside. The breed was getting thinned out at the time of my earliest visits to Edinburgh, but they were still plentiful on the city’s streets. Here ECT 776 (OFS776) has turned from Princes Street into Leith Street on its way to Granton.

On Saturday 25 March 2023, London routes 174 and 175 were swamped with vintage buses operating a free service. It was very impressive. A big thank you to the organisers (London Bus Museum) and the owners and crews of the buses.

Leyland PD2 Park Royal looks purposeful as it stands at Hall Green terminus in early March 1967 The 37was a straight sprint (later crawl) along Stratford Road into Birmingham. Behind 2191 is Priory Cycles, one of many of Birmingham's specialist cycle shops often run by ex competition cyclists. Next door is a hardware shop with an impressive array of Webb mowers outside. The ornate bargeboards of the old tram waiting shelter and Bundy clock are visible to the right, to the left an Austin A55 Cambridge MkI

Continuing on my 'up north' week - these shots are from 4/8/70.
This is my only shot of the Rawtenstall livery - I just happened to be here when No.10 , a 1949 All-Leyland PD2/1 came along - being towed - presumably for scrap.
Leyland Titan PD2/40 Special, 46, drops off passengers at Bridge Foot in the mid seventies.
Period cars in view are a Mk 1 Ford Escort, Mini and an Austin Maxi. The long demolished Howley Power Station that sat on the banks of the River Mersey can be seen in the background to the right.
One of the pair of red telephone boxes in the distance appears to be larger than the other, presumably the K4 kiosk that includes a post box and stamp machine and has since moved to where the Austin Maxi is seen in this photo.
The weekend of 25/26th.January 1969 started what was to become a trolleybus - dominated year. The Bournemouth system was due for closure in April, and a Nat. Trolleybus Assocn., tour had been arranged for the Sunday . The day before two friends and myself were routing around the Bournemouth Mallard Road depot when we came across - No, not a Trolleybus - but a 1950 Leyland PD2/3 full-front Weymann bus trying very hard to match its electric rival. At the time of its introduction virtually identical Weymann bodies adorned some of the trolley fleet.

LRV 992 992. Stagecoach Devon Leyland PD2/MCW open-top. New to Portsmouth City Transport in 1956, later converted to open-top and used for many years on Southsea services. Passed to Transit Holdings who used her in Southsea and later Oxford before passing to Stagecoach Devon in 1997. Used in summer 1998 on 120, 122 & 200. On 200 in Torquay Road, Torquay during 1998.
Park Royal bodied Leyland Titan PD2 KGU 284 was originally numbered RTL326 in the London Transport fleet and has spent many years preserved as such before moving to Jersey where it was used on a heritage service and registered J 8903. Upon return to the mainland it has been preserved as Barton 1049 though it never ran with them as seen here approaching Brough whilst operating on the heritage bus service at the Cumbria Easter Rally 2022.
The last surviving Metro Cammell bodied PD2 returned to Blackpool today for further restoration. 346 was built in 1959, withdrawn in 1975 it ran until 1982 with the Illuminations Department. Sold for preservation in 1985 it joined FTT c2005. Restoration started in 2015 and a repaint was undertaken in 2024. Storage at NWMORT in St Helens followed until it was returned home today by low loader. Interior needs fitting out with seats, which are now all sourced and retrimmed. A mechanical overhaul is needed - though it does sound good. Hopefully the end is in sight.

Was Alexanders involved with the bodybuilding of this l batch of Leyland Buses . As they look similar to contemporary Alexander bodies of that time ?
4506WB was a Leyland PD2-30 with a Roe H33-26R body. It was new to the 'A' fleet in January 1958 as Sheffield T.D. 506. It was withdrawn and sold for scrap in March 1973. It was seen during a photo stop with the dereliction and destruction of a once proud industrial landscape and heritage in the background.
I have put August 1972 although I am not sure of the exact date, it may have been earlier that summer. I am fairly sure the tour was organised to mark the imminent withdrawal of these buses.
