Wakehurst, previously known as Wakehurst Place, is a house and botanic gardens in West Sussex, England, owned by the National Trust but used and managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It is near Ardingly, West Sussex in the High Weald (grid reference TQ340315), and comprises a late 16th-century mansion and a mainly 20th-century garden, and Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, in a modern building. Visitors are able to see the gardens, the mansion, and also visit the seed bank. The garden today covers some 2 square kilometres (500 acres) and includes walled and water gardens, woodland and wetland conservation areas.
RBG Kew has leased the land from the National Trust since 1965 and much has been achieved in this time, from the Millennium Seed Bank project and the creation of the Loder Valley and Francis Rose Nature Reserves to the introduction of the Visitor Centre, the Seed café and Stables restaurant along with the development of the gardens.
Wakehurst Place is listed Grade I on the National Heritage List for England, and its gardens are listed Grade II* on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.[1][2]
The stables are listed Grade II* and the South Lodge and gateway is listed Grade II.
History
Wakehurst Place mansion was built by Sir Edward Culpeper in 1590. It originally formed a complete court-yard prior to being altered various times, and currently has an E-shaped plan. Wakehurst was bought in 1694 by Dennis Lyddell, comptroller of the Royal Navy treasurer’s accounts and briefly MP for Harwich. His son Richard Liddell, Chief Secretary for Ireland and MP for Bossiney, was obliged by financial pressure to pass the estate to his younger brother Charles.[5]
The house rated an illustration in Joseph Nash, The Mansions of England in the Olden Time (1839–49).
The gardens were largely created by Gerald Loder (later Lord Wakehurst) who purchased the estate in 1903 and spent 33 years developing the gardens.[6] He was succeeded by Sir Henry Price, under whose care the Loder plantings matured, Sir Henry left Wakehurst to the nation in 1963 and the Royal Botanic Gardens took up a lease from the National Trust in 1965.
National Collections
Wakehurst is home to the National Collections of Betula (birches), Hypericum, Nothofagus (Southern Hemisphere beeches) and Skimmia. The Great Storm of 1987 decimated Loder's plantings, toppling 20,000 trees.[7] Since then, Kew has redesigned the gardens to create a walk through the temperate woodlands of the world.
Millennium Seed Bank
The Wellcome Trust Millennium Building, which houses an international seed bank known as the Millennium Seed Bank (run by Kew, not the National Trust), was opened in 2000. The aim of the Millennium Seed Bank is to collect seeds from all of the UK's native flora and conserve seeds from 25% of the world's flora by 2020, in the hope that this will save species from extinction in the wild.

On Wednesday evenings, we host ‘You Can Make It’ workshops for adults and teens in our makerspace at Tam High School. During these open sessions, participants build new projects, with guidance from our staff and other community members.
Many of them are experienced makers, who are happy to share what they know. Here are some of the cool maker projects they are working on this month: a graceful robot spider, an eagle god with creepy eyes, an Arduino-powered garage opener, a Wifi server on a chip, and many laser cut picture frames.

Owned by East Lawn Mortuaries and Memorial Parks, a private family-owned corporation based in Sacramento, Calif. They own three cemeteries and three other funeral homes. The building was completed in 1927 and is of the exotic "Byzantine" revival style of architecture.
Now owned by New Charter, the deck access flats and maisonettes were built in the 1970s by Dukinfield Municipal Borough/Cheshire County Council as part of a slum clearance scheme. These were built using the SECTRA building system. Further examples in the Tameside area using this prefabricated building system exist in Audenshaw, just off Ashton Road.

"Every religion has its own calendar, but the Hindus have many. In a culturally diverse India, New Year is celebrated on different dates and in different ways.
Tamilians too have their own calendar and New Year is observed on the first day of Chithirai month, which usually falls on April 14.
This year’s Tamil New Year, which is known as Puthandu or Puthuvarusham, is called ‘Hevilambi or Hemalamba Nama Varsha’. The Tamil calendar has a 60-year cycle and each year has a different name. According to the Tamil calendar, 2017 is the 31st year in the cycle. The outgoing year was called ‘Dhunmuki’ and the next year will be ‘Vilambi.’
‘Puthandu’ is the New Year for the Tamil’s which is observed in the month of Chitteraim, which is also the first month of the Tamil solar calendar. On the last day of the last year, or on the eve of Puthandu all Tamilians household prepare a tray. This tray is laden with three kinds of fruits — mango, banana, and jackfruit, areca nuts and couple of betel leaves, gold or silver jewellery, a mirror, some cash, rice, coconut, and flowers. This is to be viewed the first thing in the morning. This tradition is called as ‘Kanni’. Post the Kanni, people have a cleansing bath and throng to the temples to seek divine blessings.
A tray consisting of vegetables, fruits, betel leaves, gold ornaments and a mirror is placed in the pooja room and one would view his face in the mirror once he wakes up in the morning before engaging in other activities. Reading the Panchangam or the almanac is the long-followed tradition among those who celebrate the day.
Tamils make it special by wearing new clothes, preparing sweets and by visiting temples. As per beliefs, Lord Brahma started the process of creating the universe on this auspicious day.
‘Puthandu’ or ‘Tamil New Year’ is a celebration of the New Year observed by the people of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Tamil’s in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritious and Singapore too observe this day with fanfare and enthusiasm. This auspicious occasion is also known as ‘Varusha Pirappu’.

made this for my own son, Mike, as pictured, the cake and the message! He came to visit us from Brisbane for a rare holiday and broke his leg the first day! Couldnt resist the temptation to make his favourite cake - a speedy throw together white chocolate and caramel cake just to tease him - although it was punishment enough having to spend his holiday in hospital in New Zealand :-(

Mark Small's, Ferguslie Park Community Council held event to encourage young folk onto their bikes to play safe and keep fit
. Though the day was a wet one it never kept away the kids and adults all out for a good time, in what's become a massive push by local groups to make Ferguslie park a better place and encourage others into the community.
Ferguslie’s long history of depression and financial neglect has seen many come together to build a better future for everyone, where it’s seen the rebirth of the community council that’s led to the understanding of the political system and the routes to local funding under the leadership of John McIntyre. And where local council member Mark Small has used his understanding to place his bid like many others recently and won his group five thousand pound to punches for the community, bicycles to help encourage kids away off the couch and away from the TV and back into the streets to play where many no longer venture due to the rise of social media, where friendship is the click of a mouse.
Today saw an army rise from their chairs and into the Ferguslie park Tannahill centre before heading around the streets of Darkwood, while encouraged on by the locals and police alike, in what is hopped to be the start of many and an alternative to slouching around on the couch and a lost childhood in front of the television.
The event also help the Darkwood Crew, run by another local council member Terry McTernan and his team to raise funds, by backing cakes and offering up tea and coffee within the Tannahill during the event. With the hope of creating a peaceful and relaxing area filled with plant life and benches for the locals to relax and help bring everyone together to help strengthen community given so many have been lost to social media and the need for thumbs up in what’s become a lost generation of digital victims devoid of real friendship and community policed by media giants who’s version of community is do as we say or be band, rather than allowing young people to be individuals and find their own footing all be it riding safely among friends in a real community environment..

First owned by HSBC. When finished in 1923, this building was acclaimed the most luxurious architecture from the Suez Canal to Bering Strait. It was occupied by Shanghai City Government before being purchased by SPD Bank in 1996.

Owned by the National Railway Musuem and having been restored by the LMS Carriage Association LMS Period 1 Third Open, 7828 is now in use on Peak Rail dining and cream tea services.

A visit to the National Trust property Plas Newydd on the Isle of Anglesey. The seat of the Marquesses of Anglesey.
Plas Newydd is a country house set in gardens, parkland and surrounding woodland on the north bank of the Menai Strait, in Llanddaniel Fab, near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey, Wales. The current building has its origins in 1470, and evolved over the centuries to become one of Anglesey's principal residences. Owned successively by Griffiths, Baylys and Pagets, it became the country seat of the Marquesses of Anglesey, and the core of a large agricultural estate. The house and grounds, with views over the strait and Snowdonia, are open to the public, having been owned by the National Trust since 1976.
From its earliest known resident in 1470, Plas Newydd passed by inheritance and marriage through 500 years of a family's increasing concentration of wealth, titles and estates, until the 7th Marquess of Anglesey presented it to the National Trust, so that the house and grounds could be opened to the public.
Plas Newydd is a Grade I listed building.

Waterloo Cavalry Museum. The 1st Marquess of Anglesey served at the Battle of Waterloo as the number two to the Duke of Wellington. Various artefacts from 1815 are in these rooms.

He was shot in the leg at the Battle of Waterloo, and later had to have it amputated (no anaesthetic at that time). That wooden leg was what replaced his lost leg!

Despite having my own set of triggers for being anxious – who doesn't? – I've always maintained a steady refusal for blame. It's easy to look at the world around me and claim a reason for how I'm feeling. But constant anxiety doesn't thrive in normal conditions, it's a mental illness that makes me feel worse than someone healthy in the same situation. It's no more real than when my schizophrenic uncle explained a lost button on his coat as the KGB shooting at him with a laser. Maybe my heart is pounding, my head feels light, and my stomach's in knots – but that would only make sense if death was imminent. I refuse to say that politics, foreign wars, or other existential crises are why I'm feeling wrong. I'm not beyond caring about big issues, but not as an excuse for my state of mind. This summer, time spent finding an annoying squeak in my car made me feel worse than any of my (far more real) ongoing financial struggles. That was a weird week. There will always be new reasons for anxiety, and when I knock one down, the next arrives. Instead, I aim at the source by being alone when I must, sleeping enough, and trying not to take it out on what's outside me.
