Alabama House District 12 Representative Corey Harbison (R) of Good Hope announced Saturday that he wants the State of Alabama as a government entity to stop engaging in commercial competition against privately-owned retailers and wholesale distributors.
Harbison referred specifically to what he called ‘a racket’ being operated by the Alabama Beverage Control Board with their stable of approximately 180 quasi-monopoly-by-statute retail locations scattered across the State of Alabama. One such outlet exists in Cullman County; it is located at 1114 Cullman Shopping Center NW.
This topic was one of the first issues Harbison tackled as a new legislator in Montgomery.
At that time, he attempted to bring forward a debate on the subject from a House Committee. According to Harbison, he could not even get a vote from the committee to allow it to reach the house floor for a reasonable public debate. Even worse, he states that a member of the Alabama Beverage Control Board grabbed a fellow committee member and said,
“Hey, kill this S.O.B’s bill … today!”
Needless to say, Representative Harbison has not forgotten that experience, nor has he given up on his desire to get the State of Alabama out of the business of competing against its own citizens and taxpayers.
About Alabama Beverage Control Board
Alcohol Prohibition in the United States was a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages that remained in place from 1920 to 1933.
Following this era of Prohibition, each state was individually allowed to decide by legislative action how alcoholic beverages would be managed within its borders.
On the Alabama Beverage Control (ABC) Board website, they state:
“The people of Alabama did not want alcoholic beverages marketed like soup and soft drinks. Recognizing the lethal potential of alcohol, Alabama citizens demanded its rigorous control. The ABC Board was legislatively created to fulfill this mandate.”
As a result, the ABC Board now controls alcoholic beverages through distribution, licensing, and enforcement. As mentioned above, the ABC Board operates a chain of retail stores selling the majority of liquor purchased in Alabama.
The ABC Board claims their operation:
“… operates in an efficient and cost effective manner to ensure that Alabamians who choose to purchase beverages are able to do so at a fair price while generating considerable revenue for the State and local governing authorities. The facts prove that the system of control in Alabama are working. The State ranks among the nation’s leaders in per capita revenue from the sale of alcohol but does so while maintaining one of the nation’s lowest levels of per capita consumption. High revenue with low consumption. This exactly fulfills the mandate of the people of Alabama.”
The ABC Board also licenses commercial firms to sell alcoholic beverages. such as bars, clubs and restaurants and small stores selling beer for off-premise use.
Again according to their website, the ABC Board also conducts audits, collects taxes, and disburses revenue obtained from those taxes, and disburses revenues from the ABC Stores. Recipients of these funds include the Department of Mental Health, Special Education Trust Fund, Department of Human Resources, and the State General Fund.

I attend a small, tribally owned community college called Bay Mills Community College, located in Bay Mills/Brimley, MI. At BMCC, we are fortunate enough to be involved with a program called TRiO Student Support Services. In essence, along with offering tutoring and financial assistance, TRiO also offers students opportunities to do things that they might not otherwise be able to do. I have been to broadway plays, spent five days in Washington D.C., and three days in Chicago.... all expenses paid. Their goal is to help broaden our horizons.This is a VERY rural area and to be blunt, most people in this community are not very well off. Therefore, many of us have not had opportunities to do or see things that many other people are able to do on a regular basis. One of those things is the ability to attend a university. They regularly take us on trips called transfer trips. We tour larger colleges/universities and speak with former BMCC/TRiO students who have succeeded at transferring to larger institutions.
This photo was taken in the Native American Center at Lake Superior State University on one of our tours. This painting is by a man named Peter G.Migwans. Although I was not able to get his permission to post these, I do plan on giving him full credit for his work. His paintings are so beautiful and the colors are so vivid, I just HAD to post them.
I own this Minolta lens MD 1:4 f=17mm since January 2020 but I did not used it too much beside some digital series (as this one : flic.kr/s/aHsmL8WMnJ ) when adapted to one of my Sony A7. The extreme wide-angle rectilinear lens needs some training to adapt during the photographic session. The angle is so wide (104° in the image diagonal) that it requires to turn the head around the scene to imagine the picture possible before framing.
On December 19, 2022, I decided to mount the lens on one of my two Minolta X-700, the "China" version (assembled in China 1993-1999). The camera was also equipped with its motor drive MD1 and the Minolta multi-function back. I loaded the X-700 with a B&W super-panchromatic Rollei Retro 400S (Agfa Aviphot 400) 36-exposure film.
The Agfa Aviphot film used for aerial photography is specially sensitized in the red, up to 780nm in the near IR instead of the regular 650-680 nm limit of a normal panchromatic film. The film provides usually high-definition and high-contrast negative views. What is more the Agfa Aviphot is coated on a thin and flat polyester base without any base color increasing the contrast as well. However to prevent the halation possible the Agfa Aviphot is coated on the backside with a black and blue anti-halation pigment to inhibit the light back diffusion (halation). The printing of data from a data back could be then a problem. I tested here the date print on the first initialization frame setting the intensity to the maximum available on the Minolta multi-function back (there are 6 levels of intensity available). The anti-halation is quite penetrated by the red light of the electro-luminescent diodes and a half intensity may be just enough.
On the almost same photo walk done on December 14, 2022 with my range-finder FOCA PF2B and its normal lens, the film was exposed for 400 ISO in the manual mode following either the Minolta X-700 indications or determining the exposure using my Minolta Autometer III and a 10° finder for selective measurements.

After exposures the film was processed using Adox Adonal (strictly equivalent to Agfa Rodinal) developer at dilution 1+25, 20°C for 10min 30s. The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body fitted to a Minolta Slide Duplicator installed on a Minolta Auto Bellows III with a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5. The RAW files obtained were then processed in LR and finally edited to the final jpeg pictures.
All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg.

Yay! Okay I'm so excited, I finally started the process of making my own website. This website is just temporary until I can get my website building software (dreamweaver cs4). Eventually the website will have custom graphics and an integrated paypal shopping cart. Hopefully I will have that done by the end of the month. I will be doing all of the coding and designing myself except for the graphics. I also made this temporary website.
