I'm ready to take a break from waycars for a bit. In any event, I upgraded my Athearn waycar for a more detailed Walthers version with circus city full side weathered decals. Honestly, I don't think it was worth all the work and time poured into it (considering how many better projects remain unfinished) but I did learn a lot. Not sure I'm crazy about this shot. I've bypassed it many times but since I'm without any new pics to post, I've reluctantly put it here today. I may delete it later, though.
Pearl is doing great. We've been with her 24/7 so this morning we treated ourselves to lunch w/ my dad after our hike. Normally, we'd come straight home...but since our sitter will be here ....we decided to splurge a little.
We've all said it at one point or another at the end of a day out trackside, "Just one more train."

Walking along the street I noticed that the clarinet player was playing sweet jazz, and no one paid attention to him.
The SOO 1003 makes its one and only photo runby at Swan Road, which thankfully went off without a hitch. The night before, a truck had gotten stuck on the crossing, delaying the ferry move, and there had been some concern as to how it would effect things for the charter. As it happens, the truck was freed, and the charter would go on as planned. Good thing we didn’t have to miss any smoke shows!
A friend of mine is doing an alaska calandar for Christmas presents this year. He's a great photographer but didnt have an eagle shot in this orientation that he really liked. So I dug around and found this one. He fell in love with it and now wants several prints at 11x14. Started out doing a favor and ended up making some nice bucks.

The final shot of the day from my trip to Worbarrow Bay with Pete (Coolcats100). Rushed down to the waters edge to try and get one last shot before the light completely went.
The first UP train of my west coast trip back in June climbs up Tehachapi Pass with a clean ACE on the point.
At one week old, a downy manu-o-Kū hatchling visually explores the world around its nest. The manu-o-Kū is an arboreal nesting pelagic seabird that doesn’t construct a nest; instead using a flat or hollow or fork in the tree to keep the egg from rolling away. The hatchling uses its strong, clawed, semipalmate feet to cling to the swaying tree branch that will be its home until fledging. This one is nesting in a monkeypod tree adjacent to a building in urban Honolulu that provides an opportunity for a cropped telephoto image. Parents alternate fishing and feeding duties leaving the chick unattended for up to several hours. Adults fish up to 120 miles offshore and provision the chick with fresh whole fish or squid rather than devouring then regurgitating a meal. This avian behavior was known to Polynesian voyagers and other seafarers. A landfall that may be out of view over the horizon could be located by following these birds conveying their catch back to their nestling.
It is a rare occasion for me to manage to capture a photo of a bird that is one of the more ubiquitous Australian native types that are quite common in our area. When we were down at Tinchi Tamba Wetlands a few weeks ago, I spotted these little beauties flirting around in the undergrowth. No hope of catching one I thought but, amazingly I did although it really needed some cropping to get in tighter. It was quite a way into the scrub.

Among photographers, there's this adage that you should look in back of your camera, not just in front. That was the case here. While photographing beautiful Convict Lake at night, I looked in back. This is the northern part of the Milky Way, the part that photographers routinely ignore. But I personally think it's beautiful, gazing at the ancient light from the "arm" our Milky Way that began its journey 26,000 years ago. As a bonus, you can also see the Andromeda galaxy. I say yessss! Convict Lake, CA, named for a group of convicts that escaped from Carson City, NV and were eventually cornered at the lake by locals. It's also one of our favorite places to kayak.
