Project Description:
Eighth grade students at Abigail Vare Elementary School spent several weeks with artist in residence, Ellissa Collier, to create an interdisciplinary art piece combining elements of geometry and traditional African fine crafts. Students explored pattern in traditional African mask-making and fine crafts, learned basic sewing techniques and then created a 2-dimensional fabric wall hanging utilizing decorative patterns, symbols and geometric shapes. The students also developed an awareness of mathematical forms including congruence, similar shapes, scale, ratio, proportion and symmetry.

My daughter had her birthday party few couple week ago.. had a big splash.. girls love taking their pictures!
This isn't really a mask, it's just a model of a mask. So lately I've been experimenting a bit more with my flash. And the idea here is that I could use a really short exposure and low ISO speed along with a flash to isolate my subject. This picture was taken during the day, but because of the way I exposed the picture, everything that wasn't in the flash was black. And to isolate the subject a bit more, I made a cardboard cylinder for my flash, so that it would only flash on a small area.
As for the picture itself, the mask is hanging from a lamp with some floss. As luck would have it, I had just run out of floss 2-3 days ago, and I haven't had time to resupply yet. Luckily, I found some elsewhere in the house (yes I stole it from someone else).
We found this mask at Wal*Mark the other day while looking through the Halloween stuff. As you can tell October is my favorite month, from my Birthday in the begining of the month, till Halloween at the end of the month! Great weather already just 5 days into it! Gotta Love October! : )

This mask was purchased in New Orleans in the spring of 2009. It was made by Teonova, and is a molded leather mask.
This is a mask I made out of leather scraps on a papermache mask base! I spent absolutely ages cutting out all those leaves, positioning and gluing them. This is fairly close to the real colours. I kind of love it. It's inspired somewhat by woodland spirits, like the Green Man figure, dryads and their kind.
