“Moonlit Masquerade”

In the garden silenced by the moon, the couple moved like elegant phantoms. Their Venetian masks, half mystery and half defiance, seemed to laugh at the world and at themselves, as if they had stepped out of Carroll’s twisted dream. He offered her his arm with a gesture that was both courtship and threat. Among tangled hedges and capricious shadows, they sealed a pact of madness and desire: to dance until the clock shattered and the White Rabbit could never again find the way out of the labyrinth.

Cushlough Bay on Lough Mask in western Ireland; a lone fishing boat waits for its owner amongst the reeds and Lilly pads. It occurred to me I hadn't done a framed image in quite a while so I thought this one deserved the full treatment. Thanks to Terry Eve for teaching me how to make borders a couple of years ago!

It's in literature that true life can be found. It's under the mask of fiction that you can tell the truth.

Both past and present,

we sculpt our masks to both hide -- and also reveal.

Wishing everyone a great day ahead!

This is outside the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, and despite today being a very cold day, there was blue sky and sunshine.

"Sometimes the mask we wear is simply just a smile"

Robin William

Leica M8, Voigtlander AS 2.8/90; contre-jour photo plus a degree of sharp editing.

The mask is telling us that it is in the interest of the common good that the rich get richer. That it is best to let them get on with things and that we all will benefit in the end. Humpty Dumpty said 'There's glory for you!' 'I don't know what you mean by "glory",' Alice said. Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. 'Of course you don't — till I tell you. I meant "there's a nice knockdown argument for you!"' 'But "glory" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice objected. 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.' 'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.' 'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

Smile on Saturday

We cover ourselves everyday

every minute in every way

with masks called names

with beliefs clung to like panes

of glass

so vane so crass

hiding the scars

the wounds like bars

on the spirits imprisoned

because we think

no one cares

They hurt when we stretch

out our desires

like hands to a hot fire

to warm and heal

yet

never to reveal

the truth and the pain

and so if we really want to gain

a measure of tranquility

we really must explain and exclaim

that this pain is for purpose

this hurt never must

be forgotten

give it as payment

a hell here on earth

that demands tolls

that extracts from the soil of our souls

this very life we cannot control

and thank the Lord everyday

that in His invisible Way

we can return to Him

the very thing

He gave us when He died

a life worth living

is a life worth forgiving

forgive yourself

demand

tell the demons here next to our souls

that theirs is no longer to take their tolls

on us

we can give all this hurt

it's just dessert

amen

Quick note - Black Mask isn't African-American. As you can see, in the closeup with more intense lighting, his skin is red.

DCZV Profiles:

Black Mask/Roman Sionis:

As the son of one of the most influential mobsters in Gotham, Roman had high expectations to live up to. After his father's death at the hands of the GCPD, Roman took up his father's mantle of the Black Mask -- Head of Gotham's underworld. In a chance encounter with Batman and the dead Robin, his mask was welded to his face when the latter kicked him into a furnace.

Great White Shark/Warren White:

Warren White, otherwise known as "Great White Shark" after a vicious attack from Mr. Freeze, used to be a crooked financier who embezzled millions from his company's pension fund. After pleading insanity in a court case, White was sent to Arkham Asylum, where he endured torture from his various cellmates. After escaping in a riot set up by the Scarecrow, White climbed his way to the top of the food chain and established himself as one of the top arms dealers in Gotham City.

More to come. I really like the tusks on BM's mask.

Looking for something else I found this Venetian mask. Bought in a charity store some years back for nothing more than photographing. Now it's in a box to go back to a charity store.
