mask making is a local craft in venice and the area, and is most famous at the annual carnival which is just before shrove tuesday. I find it slightly creepy, but the masks themselves are very beautiful, especially if you find the handmade ones, not the 'made in china' rubbish copies.

Fabulous mask but unlikely it was used in a dance. Usually the really ornate Mexican masks are decorative.
99% of the masks made in Mexico are just for the tourist trade. Most are quick knock-offs although some show real imagination and artistry. The authentic dance masks often have a functional design that keeps them simple and modest in size.

Tiger striped mask--my favorite. It is very small. About 2 inches in diameter. Sold to a lady in California. Made just shortly after learning how to do a tiger cane a la Debbie Jackson.
