I spotted this as we walked near the Rialto Bridge area. All the other masks I had seen were bright and quite loud...and this just struck me as an emotional mask.

Venetian mask imported from Venice, Italy and hand-painted with acrylics by Elya Filler.

This girl was posing for a friend of hers when I spotted her. I thought her mask was cool. Since I was shooting from a 6 ft step ladder, the background was asphalt and car tires. So I decided to try my hand at blacking out the background. I finally gave up trying to get rid of the "cut out" look after about 2 hr. Good grief!

This mask was at a shop on my way to Mexico.

This is the picture of the planet of the apes mask before you buy it.

Two hours later I pulled the masking paper and tape. After a day or so of curing, I'll lightly scuff the shiny areas and apply the clear coat, then buff it out.

The Carnival of Venice (Italian: Carnevale di Venezia) is an annual festival, held in Venice, Italy. The Carnival ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday. The festival is famed for its elaborate masks.

I can't remember what dad says these masks represent.

mask making is a local craft in venice and the area, and is most famous at the annual carnival which is just before shrove tuesday. I find it slightly creepy, but the masks themselves are very beautiful, especially if you find the handmade ones, not the 'made in china' rubbish copies.
