February 13, 2011. It's a bit of a tradition for Jen and I to cook something for each other for Valentine's Day dinner. I make the meal, and Jen takes care of dessert. This year I made shepherd's pie cupcakes. The pink "icing" is mashed potatoes with beets, and I adorned them with Jen's favourite food: broccoli.
Jen made gulab jamun, one of my favourite Indian desserts. This was definitely a good surprise!

Well, now you know the truth. It's not all foie gras and farmer's markets at the Spivack household. I hope you don't think any less of me. I started recording these more mundane food items for practical reasons. It will help me remember which brands of food are good at what stores carry them.
Those Goya burritos are pretty good. The herring wasn't. The Forkless Gourmet line is generally reliable. This is from Topps at Pavillion.
on christmas day at adriana's mother's house, i served a tofurkey in addition to the rest of the food that was prepared.
the tofurkey was not bad, but actually tasted better as a leftover - it had gathered more flavour (perhaps absorbing it from other ingredients) and the outer skin (which had been basted so that it would become quite brittle) had also softened.
as an overall experience, the tofurkey was interesting but still not quite the success one would hope for... though the flavour is not at all bad (it tastes of baked tofu), it lacks an interesting texture - it's still spongy and very consistent and reminds one too much of heavily processed food - there needs to be some irregularity in the texture so that one feels that it is an organice product.
the roasted root vegetables with kale, the smashed potatoes with fennel and winesap apples, the apple dumplings and roasted chestnuts were all good.
hmmmn. we'll see about next year.

In the past I've chided a friend for preferring. He says he likes it because it's tender but I say that I don't mind chewing my food. This was tender and flavorful. The foie gras was perfectly prepared. I normally don't finish mashed potatoes because they're hardly ever worth eating at all. These were great.
Slow braised short ribs are surprisingly similar to Beef Bourguignon - but to my palate more scrumptious. With a good wine the sauce becomes a little bit sweet. The tomatoes are the perfect palate cleanser.
Homemade smashed potatoes - all butter for the texture: no cream, no milk, no nothing else.
The garlic is softer and more gentle than roasted garlic and compliments the sweetness.
At the Swedish Yuletide in Boston, a woman ladles (Swedish) meatballs onto plates of mashed potatoes in the cafe called Stora Kaffestugan.
The Yuletide is put on annually by SWEA, the Swedish Women's Educational Association.

I hate the lighting in these photos but there's not much I can do about it. The lighting in our kitchen SUCKS! Oh well. This is the last one of the set because I made meatloaf and then cookies on Valentine's Day and I don't eat until all the cooking is done and the dishes are done.

I took this hearty ground beef and potato part of traditional British pub fare and tweaked it just slightly to make it vegetarian and lower fat, but still stick to your ribs and comforting. Making it in individual "pot pie" plates makes portion control, freezing and reheating easy for singles or families where everyone is on a different schedule too!
Served dish with marinated beaf, apple sauce and mashed potatoes. Chopped beaf being marinated in honey and soy sauce based marinade. Chopped chive on top.
Made up a Corned beef in our Dutch oven. Cooked it for 3 hours in Water with the seasoning packet and 1 and 1/2 packets of Onion soup mix. Then I parboiled the Baby carrots and Cabbage. putting them in a Slow cooker to stay warm. And quickly making the Idahoan instant mashed potatoes with packet of dehydrated potatoes and 4 cups of hot water.
Had leftovers for several days. Had some Reubens with the Corned beef.

These pictures have been sitting on my camera memory card for so long that I've forgotten what kind of fish this is. I remember that everything on the plate was delicious.
Just us this year. And I think for first-timers we did a pretty darn good job!
And, bonus!, we put several wedding gifts to use for the first time:
roasting pan from Kim and Eric
pretty blue casserole dish (holding the stuffing) from Krissy and Eric
meat thermometer from Graeme (I think)
Plus the wine glasses and utensils were also wedding-related gifts.
