Manfrotto 190D's short center column attachment. Very convenient for this conversion. But you can do it with one column too.

Thanks Manfrotto Group / Kata for the new Bumblebee 222 replacement..
A few years back I found out about the Kata Bumblebee 222, and was floored it was on paper an amazing backpack and easily surpassed anything on the market and bought one as soon as they were available in North America.
Anyways, while I loved the backpack and gave it a pretty glowing review, I did have a few issues with it. Including the fact that the lower portion didn't fully protect everything from falling out if someone was standing up, etc.
Well turns out it bugged them as well, so they made a change to the bag... So when I was out at WPPI I ended up talking to some Manfrotto Group folks who when they realized I had one of the few first batch bags offered to replace my 2.5 year old bag for free..
... quite thankful, and yet another reason folks should think about going to the big conventions and getting to know some of their vendors and suppliers. I also had Canon do some amazing stuff for me out at WPPI as well.

Two questions being addressed are:

2) How is the quick connect system?

While out a Gros Cap the other night, I took a few shots of the bluffs before the sun set. Although the actual sunset was a disappointment that night, the light beforehand was absolutely amazing. The only filter used for this shot was a Kenko Pro 1D Circular Polarizing filter. I applied some basic adjustments to the RAW file in Adobe Lightroom, and applied a tonal contrast layer, reduced to about 25% transparency in Adobe Photoshop.
Got everything out tonight. Not pictured is the my Canon Backpack, and my Canon SD780 IS point and shoot that I took the photo with.

This combination is not a travel tripod with a total weight of 6 kg .
I use it for table top photography and reproduction work.
The combination is mounted on a sturdy wooden tripod found at the Ghent flea market.
Height wooden tripod 65 cm to 140 cm - Center column length 50 cm.
The center column holds 2X1kg Kettler Dumbell weights.
A vintage Manfrotto Ball Head (H 10 cm) locks or let the column above turn in any direction.
The Manfrotto Super Clamp holds the horizontal column (38 cm to 70 cm) of a vintage Gitzo Reporter.
With this construction the Manfrotto Ball Head 494 (7,5 cm) comes over the table close to the object.
The construction stands beside the table, not between the photographer and the object.

Photograph taken at 06:24am on Sunday October 25th 2015 in the magic of The Golden Hour around Sunrise, (Sunrise was at precisely 06:35am), at an altitude of Four metres, off Botany Road and Marine Drive, on the sandy shoreline of Botany Bay in Broadstairs, Kent, England.
I set off at 04:35am, remembering that the clocks went backwards by one hour this morning, and drove the one and a half hour journey there to enjoy a lovely sunrise, with the tide incoming fast. After the shoot, a wonderful full English breakfast on the balcony of a pub in Viking Bay, Broadstairs. The seven bays in Broadstairs consist of: (From south to north) Dumpton Gap, Louisa Bay, Viking Bay, Stone Bay, Joss Bay, Kingsgate Bay and Botany Bay.

Discovering HDR photography this summer (and being reminded of how much a tripod improves an image) made me think that maybe I ought to finally take the plunge and replace my consumer tripod with my very first "proper" one. But as soon as I discovered that the minimum buy-in would be $150 -- assuming I wanted an actual improvement over my ten-year-old department store model -- the dream died.
But here you see the residue of Damned Good Luck. I bought the legs at a yard sale for (get this) three freakin' bucks. It was missing a head, so it ended in a stub...when they told me the price, I wondered if they didn't think it was broken or something. But after a long 2/5th of a second, I concluded that there was nothing ethically wrong with slapping the money into the guy's hand and then running like hell before someone told him that this was easly a $100 thing.
All that remained was to find a head for it. Here, too, my hand was stayed; you can get some really suspiciously cheap ones for $25, but (again) it wouldn't have been any improvement on what I already owned and the good ones started at $70 or so. So I put the legs aside and resolved to just keep an eye out for a bargain on eBay and at a certain local camera shop that carries secondhand equipment.
It wasn't long before I walked into the store and found just what I wanted in the secondhand department. This is a murder-weapon-grade block of milled metal. It's last year's model -- Manfrotto replaced it with one that was functionally identical but cheaper to make. And it's in perfect shape...not a nick on it. The clerk told me that the guy who consigned it replaced it with the next model up just a few weeks after he'd bought it. It was fresh in the box with all of its paperwork and everything. At 50% off the original price it was a snip.
Mind you, both the legs and the head are nearly at the bottom of the range when it comes to the aforementioned "proper" tripod. Usually these things weigh in at half the poundage. This tripod is heavy enough to make me tip my hat to the fellow who chose to bludgeon Bob Crane to death with one; clearly, he knew his stuff.
But those lighter carbon tripods also usually weigh in at ten times the $40 I paid for the legs and head. No contest!
All the same, the next time I wind up flying somwhere fantastic, it's going to be tough deciding whether or not to pack this big, four-pound thing.
I took it out for its first spin on Sunday. It's rock-solid and definitely a step up from what I'm used to. It also has that odd psychological effect of making you feel like a "real" photographer and prodding you to step up your game a little.
The best shots come at random, this one did.
Freelensed shot of an old Manfrotto pod with the center column turned upside down. On the bottom of the pod is mounted an old Canon SLR. I removed the lens and tried fitting it my my DSLR, when that failed I had a go at freelensing it. That went well
