Discovering HDR photography this summer (and being reminded of how much a tripod improves an image) made me think that maybe I ought to finally take the plunge and replace my consumer tripod with my very first "proper" one. But as soon as I discovered that the minimum buy-in would be $150 -- assuming I wanted an actual improvement over my ten-year-old department store model -- the dream died.

But here you see the residue of Damned Good Luck. I bought the legs at a yard sale for (get this) three freakin' bucks. It was missing a head, so it ended in a stub...when they told me the price, I wondered if they didn't think it was broken or something. But after a long 2/5th of a second, I concluded that there was nothing ethically wrong with slapping the money into the guy's hand and then running like hell before someone told him that this was easly a $100 thing.

All that remained was to find a head for it. Here, too, my hand was stayed; you can get some really suspiciously cheap ones for $25, but (again) it wouldn't have been any improvement on what I already owned and the good ones started at $70 or so. So I put the legs aside and resolved to just keep an eye out for a bargain on eBay and at a certain local camera shop that carries secondhand equipment.

It wasn't long before I walked into the store and found just what I wanted in the secondhand department. This is a murder-weapon-grade block of milled metal. It's last year's model -- Manfrotto replaced it with one that was functionally identical but cheaper to make. And it's in perfect shape...not a nick on it. The clerk told me that the guy who consigned it replaced it with the next model up just a few weeks after he'd bought it. It was fresh in the box with all of its paperwork and everything. At 50% off the original price it was a snip.

Mind you, both the legs and the head are nearly at the bottom of the range when it comes to the aforementioned "proper" tripod. Usually these things weigh in at half the poundage. This tripod is heavy enough to make me tip my hat to the fellow who chose to bludgeon Bob Crane to death with one; clearly, he knew his stuff.

But those lighter carbon tripods also usually weigh in at ten times the $40 I paid for the legs and head. No contest!

All the same, the next time I wind up flying somwhere fantastic, it's going to be tough deciding whether or not to pack this big, four-pound thing.

I took it out for its first spin on Sunday. It's rock-solid and definitely a step up from what I'm used to. It also has that odd psychological effect of making you feel like a "real" photographer and prodding you to step up your game a little.

It's designed for point and shoot cameras but has some high end features for $100 CND

The best shots come at random, this one did.

Freelensed shot of an old Manfrotto pod with the center column turned upside down. On the bottom of the pod is mounted an old Canon SLR. I removed the lens and tried fitting it my my DSLR, when that failed I had a go at freelensing it. That went well

Thanks for all of your comments, faves, and invites. I appreciate them!

We made it to the roof for my Day 14 shot, thanks to Guihem's new manfrotto tripod !

It was quite an adventure, do not try this at home!

This is the "Saint Louis" church and the roofs of Bordeaux in the background.

I'm happy to get my EF 100mm macro f/2.8 USM (forgotten in Guihem's flat) back in the bag !

Manfrotto 785b with a stronger ballhead from Sunpak installed. The tripod comes with a pistol grip ballhead that is nice, but not quite strong enough for an SLR. I believe it was part of why I dropped my camera off the tripod and broke my 50mm a couple of months ago.

The head that comes with the tripod does not remove, though. The center column I am using is from a $20 Sunpak tripod I bought at Best Buy. Since the column from the Sunpak was slightly less in diameter, I had to wrap a couple of layers of electrical tape around it so the column latch would hold. A more permanent and elegant solution is going to be the installation of some heat shrink tubing on the column.

My first idea had been to cut off the original ballhead and JB weld this one in it's place, but this seems a more elegant solution. I can replace the ballhead if I like, and it leaves the original parts intact.
