I've implemented a major performance improvement since the last time I posted.
In my earlier version, I always calculated diffuse and reflective light for a "fragment" and then scaled the results by the reflective coefficient (R) of the material.
Simplified, this is what I mean:
...
light += diffuse(..) * (1 - R)
light += reflecftive(..) * R
This means that when R is equal to 1, the material is a perfect mirror. Even so, this method would still perform the diffuse calculations and then scale that by 0. An incredible waste!
So in this new version I am treating R as a "probability" of a reflective ray to be calculated. For each sampling of a pixel, a random number between 0 and 1 is generated. For each intersection, I compare this random value to the R of the material. If the random value is greater than the reflective value, I perform the diffuse calculation. If not, I perform the reflective calculation.
This means that for a 100% reflective material (R = 1), no diffuse calculations will ever be performed. And likewise for a reflective coefficient of 0%, no reflective calculations will be performed.
For any value of R inbetween 0 and 1, a given ray will only perform one of the two calculations based on probability.
In this scene, I had a heartbreaking 1 FPS with by previous version. With this new approach I get around 10-11 FPS. Thats a tenfold performance increase!

The National Pre- Synodal Assembly took place on Saturday 18 June 2022 in Athlone and Clonmacnoise
Delegates from the 26 dioceses on the island of Ireland; Religious Congregations; representatives from other Catholic groups and lay ecclesial associations; members of the clergy; members of the Synodal Pathway Steering Committee and Task Group.
In March 2021, the Bishops’ Conference announced a synodal pathway for the Catholic Church in Ireland, leading to the organisation of a national synodal assembly. A five-year timeline is envisaged for this work comprised of two phases:
(i)a two-year phase of listening and discernment, and;
(ii)followed by a three-year phase of planning and implementation
The initial two-year phase coincides with the Universal Synod on Synodality announced by Pope Francis and taking place from 2021-2023 and so the listening work undertaken in Ireland for the Universal Synod is integrated with the preparations for Ireland’s national Synodal Pathway. Tomorrow’s National Pre-Synodal Assembly will see diocesan delegates, and other participating groups, gathering together to prepare the national synthesis, which will be sent to the Vatican to feed into the Universal Synod.

DOT’s newly implemented plaza at 125th Street and Park Avenue, just underneath the Metro North viaduct, aims to activate the transit crossroads of the Harlem-125th Street Corridor through new seating areas, improved lighting and artwork. The NYC DOT Art Program partnered with Creative Art Works and the New Harlem East Merchants Association (NHEMA) to present, “Harlem Sunrise,” a mural painted on-site by Creative Art Work’s Youth Employment Program, led by teaching artist, Gera Lozano. The sunburst design pays homage to the artwork by Terry Adkins on the overpass above the plaza, while also encourages feelings of hope and prosperity to the diverse inhabitants of the neighborhood.

Agahi to implement the Nokia-UNESCO Mobile Learning initiative to deliver quality education to teachers
Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones
Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.
Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.
Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.
This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.
In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.
Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”
Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.
Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”
This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

21 September 2017 - UNGA - Implementation of SDGs should be country-led and country-owned.
This high level side event organized at the helm of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly continues to advocate the nature of the 2030 Agenda—‘country-led and country-owned,’ as reflected during the UNDG high level event during the HLPF 2017 earlier this year.
UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed in her key note remarks stated, “We have hit the SDGs walking – not yet running – and we need to pick up the pace. Progress will only be achieved through genuine and meaningful partnerships.”
Host of the event, Mr. Achim Steiner, the UNDG Chair and the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said, "In the SDGs we have found a common language in identifying the challenges and opportunities in development. We need new partnerships- we need investment bankers to work with rural farmers, policy makers with activists."
The side event also marked the launch of the 2016 UNDG results report: Lift Off: Agenda 2030—Shared Results of the UNDG in 2016. The new report captures the collective results and impact achieved by the UN Development System through 131 UN Country Teams supporting 165 countries and territories, as well as by the UNDG at the regional and global levels. The report is now available at undg.org

Dear Mr Pugh,
I hope you are well and enjoyed your weekend. I understand that you may have rung earlier with regards to offensive graffiti at Romily Place. I apologize that the graffiti is still present.
I just wanted to inform you that a graffiti removal team attended to the property on 29 September 2011, but unfortunately a disclaimer was unable to be signed, which we need to carry out work on private property. However, the builder working on the property at the time informed us that he would look to remove the graffiti after speaking to the owners, and would contact Cardiff Council if there were any problems.
Thank you very much for bringing to our attention that it is still present, we will attempt to contact the owners to establish if they would like us to remove the graffiti for them. Due to the offensive nature of it, we will make this a priority.
I once again apologize for the delay in attending to your issue.
Best wishes,

A campaign to remove visual litter (graffiti and tags) from our streets.
The trouble with tagging and graffiti is it's like over-littered areas and readily gets added to.
"It's there already, so it doesn't matter if I do it!"
We've become so used to seeing it that we stop acknowledging it's presence and start perceiving it as normal and acceptable.
Visual litter will remain as a recurrent and accumulative issue on our streets if it's not removed as quickly as possible by councils, private businesses or the willing community.
It will remain a cyclic issue, perpetuating the degradation of the quality of our community's environment.
Councilors often like to gain political favor by the removal of graffiti, time and time again, without ever addressing the preventative measures of education.
This will remain a cyclic issue, perpetuating the degradation of the quality of our community's environment if these preventative measures are not put in place!
The Canton Green Party suggests running relevant mentor led projects within our schools and communities.
Organizations like: "Peaceful Progress" a Cardiff based Graffiti Arts Group

Or CRUELVAPOURS
Who are a professional aerosol art company based in Cardiff.

They are currently on the outlook for public problem walls, especially graffiti vandalism or fly-postering.
So far they have tackled a few problem areas in Roath where fly posters and graffiti was a problem, since they have created their artwork on the walls, all vandalism has stopped.
Their service is free of charge as long as the wall is situated in a high visibility area and that their artists have artistic license over the content of the mural.
Please check out their work via their photo stream on flickr or visit their websites:

Organizations such as this and others, could, would and do instill
"A right time, right place ethos".
Please Send photos of "Syx 10" or "Syks" from around Cardiff.
Please email any information and photos to nige@nigelpugh.co.uk (jpegs med size)
I will collate them and present them to the Cardiff City Council with the view to the removal of, and the stemming of the continual visual littering of our communities.
Mentor systems will always have longer term solutions. And lets stem this recurrent issue, of which Councilors love to gain favor with.
NB: The Canton Green Party in no way advocates "tagging or graffiti" without the permission of public or private property owners.

AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.

The best way to prevent cyber bullying in schools is through implementing an actual law that prohibits this behavior on school grounds. Many states have implemented laws similar to this one where cyberbullying is banned on all school owned electronic devices. These laws help prevent cyberbullying by stating that cyberbulling is illegal on the grounds that it will “create a hostile environment” and infringe on the rights of the “victim.”

Inveneo is proud to be an implementing partner with Creative Associates in the Tanzania 21st Century Basic Education Program (Tz21) where our role is to lead the technology intervention design and deployment with Kicheko Ltd, our Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP) in Tanzania. Together, Inveneo and Kicheko have been instrumental in introducing sustainable technology solutions that are relevant to rural Tanzanian schools that often lack electrical power and ICT skilled staff.
Recently we passed a major milestone in the program - the deployment of information and communication technologies to 5 pilot schools.
Dr. H.E. Kavishe of Kicheko, Wayan Vota and Jen Overgaag of Inveneo, assisted by a cadre of Kicheko technicians, installed a mix of laptops, desktops, LED projectors and related networking and power equipment at Naliendele, Kambarage, Darajani, and Kisiwandui Primary Schools, and Machakaeni Teacher Center.
The pilot deployment is testing technology configurations and the installation was used to train local engineers on Inveneo installation methodologies in preparation for the major ICT deployment to all schools, scheduled for early 2012.

I like Lobo for brunch because the two regular waitresses, Jen and Vicki, are both sweet and adorable, and because Jen pumps me full of coffee and lets me sit and read as long as the mood keeps me.
Oh, and the food is good too.

A Tableau of the Crop and Assorted Implements
One does not usually think of Connecticut when considering states that produce tobacco, that honor lies with Virginia and farther South and West; but Connecticut farms have grown the crop used primarily for cigar wrappers for centuries. While the Windsor area was most prolific, farms in towns around the state also produced tobacco.
Here we see, next to the thermometer advertising 'Tru Ade' soft drink, tobacco hung for drying. Tobacco is traditionally dried in specially built barns with slat-like openings for ventilation. Once the tobacco is nearly dry, the barns are heated to 'cure' the product. Below area line of cigar boxes and tobacco tins, and a machine labeled,

FECOFUN is an umbrella organisation of more than 18,000 community forest user groups in Nepal. As part of the Hariyo Ban Program, FECOFUN is facilitating the implementation of 53 community adaption plans of action (CAPAs) in two areas: the east-west Terai Arc region, and the north-south Chitwan-Annapurna region.
This poster gives an overview of the CAPA process and describes a health check-up tool that was developed to assess adaptation plans and establish an initial baseline to help measure performance over time. Information collected with the health check-up also provides a benchmark to assess changes in the adaptive capacity of women, poor and vulnerable communities.
Other development partners can use this tool to monitor their investments in community adaptation.
This poster was displayed at the 10th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA10) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in April 2016.

Respect League is a not-for-profit group of junior football clubs that have come together to give children the best possible start in football. The League is leading the way in fully implementing The FA's vision for children's football and there whole approach is more child-centered and age-appropriate than traditional Leagues.
They give children the ideal environment to accelerate their learning. The FA have awarded them Charter Standard status and they've won the coveted Bronze Award as the best League in the whole county !
The referees are trained to 'manage' the game rather than just blow a whistle. This means they're talking to the players throughout, encouraging them, advising and helping them to avoid foul play. It's calm, safe and fun. Oh, and the football is fantastic!
