Tenille Tonga
Tenille Tonga who describes herself as an Indigenous gay tradesperson, is the first female Leading Hand in Hastings Deering Mackay and manages a team of 20 diesel fitters, trades assistants, and apprentices.
“When I first started, I thought I wasn’t getting the same jobs as the blokes I really had to prove myself,” said Tenille.
“Things still are not exactly equal, but it is a far more friendly female environment today than it has ever been.
“When Hastings Deering implemented Together As One, it struck me how important it is to share my story with other apprentices to show them how the industry has made significant inroads and we can come to work and be our ‘true selves’.
“Being both indigenous and female I am called upon to talk to our apprentices every year when they are inducted to Hastings Deering and I never take that role lightly.
I am always honoured when the company nominates me for an award because it allows me to look back and appreciate what I have achieved in eight years and then share that with others.
Tenille won the Rising Star Award in the Queensland Resources Council’s 2019 Indigenous Awards.
“I enjoy sharing my journey with our apprentices, to students at schools when I have opportunities to talk to girls, in particularly about STEM, and then also during NADOC Week when I can celebrate my heritage and show others what possibilities can be reached.”

Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.
Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.
This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.
In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.
Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”
Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.
Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”
This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

No color = control.
Green = readable in one or more of the tested spectra.
Yellow = somewhat difficult to read, but readable nonetheless, in one or more of the tested spectra.
Red = very difficult or impossible to read in any of the tested spectra.
Lessons learned:
-Permanent black markers are great for obscuring markings (such as SS numbers).
-Colored markers, crayons, and pencils are bad for obscuring markings.
-Highlighter markings are easily obscured by most writing implements.
-To make a secret letter, write with a mechanical pencil or a black permanent marker, then cover the text with lots of black pen markings. The message can be decoded with an infrared still or video camera (such as a Sony Handycam with NightShot).
Elizabeth, N.J., December 20, 2018 – Elmora School No. 12 has been selected as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) National Demonstration School in an announcement made by AVID this afternoon.
According to AVID, School No. 12 is New Jersey’s first urban AVID National Demonstration School.
AVID is a research-based instructional model that encourages students to prepare for and participate in a challenging college preparatory curriculum and is implemented in more than 6,400 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Department of Defense Education, Canada, and Australia. AVID impacts nearly 2 million students in grades K–12 and 50 postsecondary institutions.
The AVID team arrived at School No. 12 in the morning to take a school-wide tour and evaluate the school’s AVID program to determine whether it met the standards to become a national demonstration site.
School No. 12 has been building its AVID program since 2013. In June 2016, School No. 12 was among the schools throughout the country to be selected as an AVID Showcase School for AVID’s Fall 2016 showcase schedule, at which a presentation was given on School No. 12’s AVID implementation. Visitors, including educators from throughout New Jersey, engaged in conversations with students about WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading) strategies and observed students’ participation in Philosophical Chairs and Socratic Seminars on controversial topics.
On July 19, Elmora School No. 12 Vice Principal Melissa Kulick was given the prestigious honor to present the keynote address during the General Session at the 2018 AVID Summer Institute in Philadelphia, PA. Summer Institute is AVID’s annual professional learning event where districts come to learn the latest in AVID methodologies and strategies to successfully implement AVID in their schools.
Kulick shared School No. 12’s journey in becoming an AVID Demonstration Site with participants representing districts throughout the Northeast. She reflected on a moment when she recognized that AVID was going to be successful at School No. 12
“…I walked into a seventh grade AVID class and overheard a student say to peers, ‘Let’s collaborate before we decide which topic to side with,’” said Kulick. “She pointed to the classroom WICOR poster as if it was this powerful weapon. At that moment, something clicked within me. I knew that AVID was beginning to take hold.”
As she further described how the AVID program was taking shape at School No. 12, she said she was reminded “that urban learners are more than capable, can think critically, and college should and must be a part of their future.”
The AVID Team that conducted the evaluation agreed with her assessment of the success that was taking place throughout the AVID program at School No. 12 and provided validation that college education should and must be a part of the future for students in urban schools.
“We are pleased to announce and welcome Elmora School No. 12, Elmora University, as an AVID National Demonstration School,” said AVID Demonstration Coach Tamara Gilliam.
“Realize that you are now officially a teaching and learning center for all of the AVID world,” added Gilliam.
AVID has been an important part of the curriculum at Elizabeth Public Schools for the past decade and has been instrumental in the district increasing the number of students participating in postsecondary education after graduation.
“We are proud of Elmora School No. 12 for being a shining example of the AVID program, which aligns so well with our district goals,” stated Hugelmeyer. “The lessons and skills provided to our students through the AVID program are invaluable in our efforts to prepare each of our students for a college education and a successful career.”
“The students and staff at Elmora School No. 12 have been highly committed to advancing the AVID program over the past several years and today their dedication and determination has been rewarded,” said Elizabeth Board of Education President Maria Carvalho. “Congratulations to the Elmora School No. 12 learning community for this tremendous honor, you truly deserve it.”

Landscape Level Integration and Shared Stewardship (LLISS) Team – Regional Office
Alone, the ingredients of landscape-level, integration and shared stewardship seem like quite the recipe. But in March of 2020, the Southern Region’s Landscape-Level Integration and Shared Stewardship (LLISS) team officially hit the ground running with an innovative approach to work in the country.
Our main objectives as a region remained unchanged: to increase integration, create transparency and increase performance accountability. These efforts remain critically important to aligning national and regional priorities of Shared Stewardship and accelerating the pace and scale of restoration.
Since that inception, more than 80 Forest Service employees from the across the Region and the Southern Research Station have come together to ensure successful implementation of the Forest Service mission. The LLISS initiative works as interdisciplinary teams, sub teams and short teams to test the concepts of data-driven decision making to support landscape level integrated management and shared stewardship internally and with external partners.
In October of 2020, the LLISS work began in earnest, doing research across the region, even nationally with other regions to share ideas and generate feedback on how best to apply the LLISS framework. This framework exists to best aid decision makers at all levels across the region in recognizing opportunities and evaluating work, workforce and budget priorities.
The LLISS framework utilizes data to consider local condition and priority when determining where regional priorities align with work on the landscape. Throughout Fiscal Year 21, the Southern Region focused on building the data infrastructure and prioritization criteria for these decisions.
LLISS team members are building resources and tools to more efficiently leverage or improve existing data sources to understand forest conditions across the region and overlay diverse work priorities and initiatives such as forest resilience, water quality, recreation, prescribed burning, Great American Outdoors Act improvements and land acquisitions.
More than 18 months of work has led to an integrated data-sharing approach that has crossed boundaries internally and externally, leading to more holistic project development that meets more customer needs, while ensuring we are doing the right work, in the right place, at the right time, with the right partners. The LLISS initiative has created a safe space for learning and innovation to occur beyond traditional work assignments has rewarded and energized participants.
The LLISS team has been creating new work models for building sub teams and short teams to work across traditional work unit boundaries to tackle challenging questions and create innovative solutions. After action reviews and exit interviews have provided regular feedback that staff involved in these teams report that the LLISS work is among the most exciting, empowering and innovative of their career. Staff are taking these models and applying them forward to address other challenges in the workplace.
Looking into 2022, the LLISS initiative aims to continue supporting regional and national priorities such as tackling climate change, improving the work environment, enhancing recreation opportunities and bettering our forests and grasslands.
Rwanda’s Ministry of Natural Resources has convened a high-level policy dialogue on the country’s Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy. The meeting came three days before Rwanda joins nations from across the world to sign the historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change at the United Nations in New York.
The high-level dialogue assessed the implementation of the strategy – an important part of Rwanda’s commitment to building a green economy and preparing for a warmer planet. It brought together environment and natural resources stakeholders and policy makers from government, development partners, the private sector and non-government organisations.
This is the second time such a dialogue has been held.

AI infrastructures are being developed and deployed. In cadence with their implementation, our dependency on digital systems grows. However, new algorithms still carry old bias and societal discourse is limited by lack of access and dissolution of commons. The panel turns to experts in the fields of science, art and technology to help recognize the formative processes, made rampant by digital technology, that shape our living together. On a global scale, society has been dealt a foul hand within the parameters of “A New Deal”. The panel will give a platform to concepts, projects and individual actors who take an active role in changing that fact.
