A classic example of British Rail implementing their "closure by stealth" policy. Needless to say, the revised service was hopelessly unreliable, and the line died a slow, lingering death. Hope has since been revived however! At some point during this millennium, work on the "Croxley Rail Link/Metropolitan Line Extension" may eventually start. This will see this Croxley Green branch line reopened, and incorporated into the Metropolitan Line, by way of a new viaduct which will join the two lines.

The joint response of the Dutch Relief Alliance, a consortium of 16 Dutch aid organizations, provides life-saving assistance to people facing severe food insecurity in drought-affected Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Most southern Africa countries are likely to receive below normal harvests in 2020, given the poor performance of the 2019/20 rainfall season, characterized by erratic and below normal rains. This is also the outlook for Zambia and Zimbabwe – the impact of the reduced rains is expected to have caused a contraction in the area planted and lowered yield prospects. Heavier rainfall since mid-December 2019 provided some respite and helped to alleviate moisture deficits, but concurrently resulted in localized flooding in parts of both countries with the earth too dry and hard to absorb the rain. In Zambia, the number of people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance will rise from 1.7 million people (May – September 2019), to about 2.3 million people being in a severe food insecure situation.

The Joint Response in Zambia and Zimbabwe targets the most vulnerable households, aiming to improve direct access to food, protect and rebuild livelihoods, which contributes to the structural approach addressing the drought, provide access to clean drinking water and raise awareness on hygiene and nutrition, and screen and treat children below 5 and pregnant and lactating women for malnutrition. The design of the intervention is based on the sectors directly related to the drought situation, in line with the cluster recommendations, based on the expertise of partners and complementarity with other ongoing interventions. Partners work in rural as well as urban areas, depending on the locally identified needs. Throughout the intervention, cluster, SPHERE and CHS standards are followed. After the outbreak of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, the project duration was extended until 30 November 2020, and an extra budget was made available to cater to the increasing needs in both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Agahi to implement the Nokia-UNESCO Mobile Learning initiative to deliver quality education to teachers

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.

Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.

Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.

This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.

In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.

Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”

Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.

Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”

This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.

Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014

Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.

Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

The best way to prevent cyber bullying in schools is through implementing an actual law that prohibits this behavior on school grounds. Many states have implemented laws similar to this one where cyberbullying is banned on all school owned electronic devices. These laws help prevent cyberbullying by stating that cyberbulling is illegal on the grounds that it will “create a hostile environment” and infringe on the rights of the “victim.”

Inveneo is proud to be an implementing partner with Creative Associates in the Tanzania 21st Century Basic Education Program (Tz21) where our role is to lead the technology intervention design and deployment with Kicheko Ltd, our Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP) in Tanzania. Together, Inveneo and Kicheko have been instrumental in introducing sustainable technology solutions that are relevant to rural Tanzanian schools that often lack electrical power and ICT skilled staff.

Recently we passed a major milestone in the program - the deployment of information and communication technologies to 5 pilot schools.

Dr. H.E. Kavishe of Kicheko, Wayan Vota and Jen Overgaag of Inveneo, assisted by a cadre of Kicheko technicians, installed a mix of laptops, desktops, LED projectors and related networking and power equipment at Naliendele, Kambarage, Darajani, and Kisiwandui Primary Schools, and Machakaeni Teacher Center.

The pilot deployment is testing technology configurations and the installation was used to train local engineers on Inveneo installation methodologies in preparation for the major ICT deployment to all schools, scheduled for early 2012.

Following the end of the Civil War, the United States Congress passed legislation that greatly extended the scope of pension coverage for both veterans and for their survivors and dependents, notably their widows and orphans. This ballooned the number of staff that was needed to implement and administer the new benefits system to over 1,500 and quickly required a new building to house them all. Meigs was chosen to design and construct the new building, now the National Building Museum. He broke away from the established Greco-Roman models that had been the basis of government buildings in Washington, D.C., up until then, and was to continue following the completion of the Pension Building. Meigs based his design on Italian Renaissance precedents, notably Rome's Palazzo Farnese and Plazzo della Cancelleria.

Included in his design was a 1,200-foot long sculptured frieze executed by Caspar Buberl. Since creating a work of sculpture of that size was well out of Meigs's budget, he had Buberl create 28 different scenes (totaling 69 feet in length), which were then mixed and slightly modified to create the continuous 1,200-foot long parade that includes over 1,300 figures. Because of the way that the 28 sections are modified and mixed up, it is only by somewhat careful examination that the frieze reveals itself to be the same figures repeated over and over. The sculpture includes infantry, navy, artillery, cavalry, and medical components as well as a good deal of the supply and quartermaster functions.

Meigs's correspondence with Buberl reveals that Meigs insisted that one teamster, "must be a negro, a plantation slave, freed by war," be included in the Quartermaster panel.[2] This figure was ultimately to assume a position in the center, over the west entrance to the building.

When Philip Sheridan was asked to comment on the building, his reply echoed the sentiment of much of the Washington establishment of the day, that the only thing that he could find wrong with the building was that it was fireproof. (A similar quote is also attributed to William T. Sherman, so the story might well be apocryphal.)

The completed building, sometimes referred to as "Meigs's Old Red Barn", was created by using more than 1,500,000 bricks, which, according to the wits of the day, were all counted by the parsimonious Meigs.

Nov. 14, 2020. A Tableau of the Crop and Assorted Implements

One does not usually think of Connecticut when considering states that produce tobacco, that honor lies with Virginia and farther South and West; but Connecticut farms have grown the crop used primarily for cigar wrappers for centuries. While the Windsor area was most prolific, farms in towns around the state also produced tobacco.

Here we see, next to the thermometer advertising 'Tru Ade' soft drink, tobacco hung for drying. Tobacco is traditionally dried in specially built barns with slat-like openings for ventilation. Once the tobacco is nearly dry, the barns are heated to 'cure' the product. Below area line of cigar boxes and tobacco tins, and a machine labeled,

FECOFUN is an umbrella organisation of more than 18,000 community forest user groups in Nepal. As part of the Hariyo Ban Program, FECOFUN is facilitating the implementation of 53 community adaption plans of action (CAPAs) in two areas: the east-west Terai Arc region, and the north-south Chitwan-Annapurna region.

This poster gives an overview of the CAPA process and describes a health check-up tool that was developed to assess adaptation plans and establish an initial baseline to help measure performance over time. Information collected with the health check-up also provides a benchmark to assess changes in the adaptive capacity of women, poor and vulnerable communities.

Other development partners can use this tool to monitor their investments in community adaptation.

This poster was displayed at the 10th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA10) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in April 2016.
