Reed Canal Park is usually a hangout for some kind of egret, and on most days, you can see at least one species. This is the Great Egret, which is the largest and most regal.
This particular bird is the only Great Egret I've seen in the park. Normally, when you see them in public parks, it is usually a solitary bird dropping in for a fishing excursion!
While I've seen the herons and anhingas on all sides of this lake, the Great Egret seems to prefer the south side, near the turtle habitat. You will usually see it perched atop the bridge, looking for a fish in the water, and if disturbed, it will walk or fly quickly over to this more secluded pond and begin its hunt there. I captured many pics of this particular bird hunting. Its ability to remain motionless and unflinching is legendary!
Three killer whales had passed us in Quatsino Narrows, two adults and a juvenile. They had gone some distance past us when we saw them return suddenly, followed by quite a commotion. They were apparently attacking something, but from the distance we were away you couldn't tell what it was. Only when zooming into shots taken with long lenses could we see what it was - in the right of this frame you can just see the head of a seal, and what we witnessed was a remarkable display of the adult transient whales teaching the young one how to hunt . . .

The hunting season has started in the surrounding forests but this elk is smart and stays in the city for a while.
Had my spring turkey hunting tag for this week, which is always a fun event. My dad already got his turkey on Wednesday (opening day) so he was dedicated to calling in the turkeys for me.
The weather was a bit uncooperative, however. We put the tent up (right side) while it was snowing (yes, in mid-April). It was also so windy, it was difficult to hear any responses to calls. Note the 2 decoys, the hen and the custom jake (young male) displaying.
Despite the difficulty with the wind, my dad expertly was able to call in 2 jakes, who were interested in the hen decoy as well as hanging out with the jake decoy. Bad news: shooting from inside the tent, I completely shot over the one I could see, missing him, and deafening both of us in the tent. Turkeys 1, Matt 0.
